Potrce AFPAiRs.—Befors Justice Williams, of the Northern Liberties Distr Jobn Smith was brought up charged with an assault and bat- tery on bis wife, Augusta Smith. The trial pre- duced no new feature in the long aa el mestic differences; and the magistrate lv bound John over to keep the peace towerds his wife and everybody else during the space of six calendar months. Mr. Biggs was arrested on the oath of a huck- ster for selling cabbage in the market without having first procured a license so to do Biggs alleged that what vegetables be sold or attempted to dispose of in the market were the products of his own farm, and were consequently exempt from the license law regulating the bocksters; but as be could bring wo proof of the fact other than his own statement he was fined $5 and costs. Upon the rendition of the jndgmeot, the defend- ant appealed to the City Councils. H. Pena was also hauled up on precisely a similar charge with the above, and, luckil: |, was able to prove that be grew all the stuff which he bad brought to the market, and was promptly dismissed Wm. Brown was had up for throwing stones in the streets, and fined #1 and 38 cents costs. Serenth District —On Saturday, Reuben Ball, colored. was arrested by Officer Arnold on a charge of larceny. Aftera bearing before Jus- tice Donn be was dismissed, the evidence being insofticient to sustain the charge. Jobn Ross was arrested by Oficer Yeatman for indalging in profane and ledecons language in the public streets. He was flaed 81 and costs. Jotun Doe, Whose name has so long been fa- miliar to the justices and officers throug heut this District and ibe State of Marylard, was picked up by Officer Yeatman in an intoxicated condi- tioa and bebaving iu a disorderly manner. Jus- tice Doon ordered John to “ po t1 $5 91 for the benefit of the Corporation, t being the penalty and costs attached to his @ence. John refused to pay ‘ary red,”’ and the Squire com- mitted bim to the workhouse to be employed for ninety days on ‘* the farm.’ Tes Taga tRe.—That great Washington favor- te, Miss J. M. Davenport, commences an engage- ‘nent at the Theatre to-night, in the ebaracter of “Adrienne, the Actress. She has just got through with an engagement of several weeks in Phila- delphia, and of her personation of the character of Adrienne, the Philadelphia Evening Journal ssys ‘Phe great artist, P instinct and education, is Proclaimed by Miss Davenport’s performance of Adrienne. Its features are lit by genius sub- Jected to the disciple of reason, and inspired by nature under the firm control of a sound jady- ment, and a refined taste. Here, we bold, ix the keystone of the dramatic arch. Genius, however stardy aud lively, will dash itself to Pieces, or lose itself in foothardy flights; if unrestrained by good sense and knowled; In Miss Davenport's acting there are no convulsive eiforts, no sudden and startling teroes of passion, and nove of the fever heats with which diseased intellect is wasted. The nicely different Phases of the character were approached naturally, and de- veloped naturally. Adrienne’s love—the love of a beart filled with brave and beautiful images, and yearning after the unselfish sympathy of a spirit kindred in ambition and hope; the sharp sorrow of di the dreary agony of conviction that the treasures of the soul have been wasted and can never more be recalled; the struggles of the bleeding but forgiving heart, with despair and bate and revenge; and the cruel death— be sad ending of the little chapter that opened with sach songs of joy and beams of beauty—O, how real it was all! Odv Petiow’s Furrrat —An anus lly large number of persons were in attendance y, erday aferpoon, to participate in the funeral rites «f Mr. Washington Branner, from bis late resi- dence on G street, between Seventeenth and Fighteenth streets The Grand Lodge, and Grand Encampment, with Withers’s fall band, accom- panied by Ridgely Encampment ard Friendship Lodge of Odd Fellows were present in large numbers, and took charge of the remains of the deceased brother. The corpse was taken to the German Chureb, Rev Mr. Finckel’s, in the First Ward, where the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J. G Butler, from the text ‘The righteous man hath hope.’? The services at the cburea ended, the procession wended its way to Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, where the re- mains were passed through the line, the band playing a mournful dirge the while. The funeral services were continued by Rev. Mr Finckel, after which the beautiful ritual of theI O O F. was read by Chaplain P. H. Sweet, and the se:- viees ended by piacing the coffin in the vault of the Cemetery Coapel. The deceased was well and favorabiy kaown to large numbers of our citizens for his many excellent qualities. ‘Tue Ixriog, Mszrtina, last night, at the old Medical Coliege, was attended by a large crowd, principally of idie young men around town, who went there simply to indulge their Propensity forexcitement. Or, in other words, to kick u a muss, generally. The Proceedings were muc: like those of an ordinary political meeting, the infidels rather priding themselves on behaving with dignity and Propriety, while those they (facetiously) denominated as “ Christians” con- ducted themselves in a very unchristian way for ‘be most part. A Mr. Newman, in the course of the evening, made a rambling sort of speech on the del side of the controversy; and, not being @ practised debater or well read in such matters, he ae injured the cause he essayed to defend. Various infidel harangues were pro- nounced—none of which embraced points so 2droitly put as to operate even on the weak miods present. to the injury of the ccuse of chri - perc ere. We learn that, berea’ter, all persons attending these meetings, who may not be mem- bers of the infidel society, will be charged an ndmission fee, wttich will materially lessen the crowd of noisy, idle young men, ambitious of kicking up a fuss generally, there. aimtnaL Covugt.—On Saturday afternoon, Jobn Shaub was convicted of stealing wood from John A. Smith, Esq , and sentenced to eight months imprisonment in the county jail. Jobn Madder was convicted of a similar of- fence, and recommended to the mercy of the court. Youne Men's Cugistiax Association —Sat- urday evening, soon after the gas was lighted in the library and reading rooms, the tables were surrounded by young men, citizens, and stran- ers, who were there to participate in the prayer meeting and bible class. At the hour pointed the company was invited to the library, and aj bour was pleasantly and profitably Passed in de- votional exercises, afier which the bible class opened. The subject was the inspiration of the Seriptures, and was a fairly and clearly stated by the teacher, Rev. Mr Sampson. After balf an hour thus occupied by the teacher, an oppor- tanity was given forthe presentation of ques- tions npon the subject by the company, by which a wide fteld for scriptural investigation was opened to theclass Among those present, we noticed several bible students of considerable ability. who took great interest fo the investiga- tien. ‘Phe sabject will be coatinued at the next meeting, when several points of Interest con- nected with it will be explained.
