[Correspondence of N. ¥. Journal of Commerce } Parts, December 16th, 1858. Several distressing accidents have occurred lately, by fre, to young ladies. Scarcely more than a week or ten days ago, ane of the daugh- ters of the Earl of Bedford, died from the inja ries she received by her dress taking fire from die; and now, another daughier of the je family has met with the same fate, ting to extinguish the flames. The y deaths, and of many cases of disiguration; there is now an easy and simple ee Some years ago, a beautiful and ac- complished actress experienced a sad and pain- ful death arising from this cause. The fancy drapery of her costume took fire from the foot- lights; in a few seconds the wearer wis envel- oped in scorching flames, and shortly after- wards she died from their effects. Since that event means have been adopted in the ward- room department of many theatres to prevent the reoarrence of the disaster. The light dresses and mantles are rendered, not, indeed, incombustible, but, at any rate, uninflammable, or blaze proof, by soaking them in a weak solution of chloride of sine, 20 that if they are exposed to the flame of a can- die or of light, they are only reduced to tinder: without a blaze or a flame. The recent melancholy catastrophe have shown the neces sity of such a precaution in the drawing-room and bed-room, no less than on the stage of a theatre. We hope that the discoveries of chemical science will not be neglected, and that in a short time all light articles of dress will be rendered effectually blaze-proof Al- ready we see announcemenis of crinolines that are uninflamm: , Which serve as a protection ments from the danger of fire ; even if th took fire, the cage of hoops would thus prevent the person from being burnt. fhe winter fashions have assumed a definite form. The cold rainy weather of the last week has produced a great display of warm gar- ments. The autumnal shawls are discarded; the bournous, coats and long cloaks, have re- Placed them. The bournous is decidedly the garment preferred, and is certainly the warm- est and most comfortable mantle that has been worn for many years. Our most distinguished mantua-maker, Madame Fauvet, 4 Rue de Menars, makes magnificent black velvet bour- nous without any trimming but a wide and rich passementeri, ornament with jet placed around the hood. The velvet with which these cloaks are made, is manufactured of an enor- mous width, thus obviating the necessity of a seam in the garment. Among the beautiful costumes which are pre- pared in the atelier of Madame Fauvet for the coming gay season, one particularly admired isof very rich gros grams, violet and black, with six —— trimmed with a rich chenille gimp with hanging buttons. The high body is trimmed with gimp to match, arranged in straps from the throat half way dow’ the body, and finished bya hanging button. The sleeves are flat at the bottom, open, and buttoned like an amazon sleeve, with two large puffs at the elbow. Another recherche toilette is com- posed of black velvet, the two side breadths trimmed with horizontal bands of black gui- pure, and large bows of rich blue velvet. The cor: is also ornamented with guipure and bows from the point to the shoulders. Bran- deburgs are much adopted for trimming the bodies and sleeves of dresses. Some half long sleeves are composed of two puffs at the top and a plaited trimming. Small bishop sleeves, and sleeves made entirely of puffs, from the shoulder to the wrist, is also worn. In the winter fashions, Malame Alphonsine, 12 Rue du Helier, displsys her usual taste in discarding the showy styl adopted by some of the other modistes of Paris. The fronts of the bonnets are decidedly la ger, and cover much more the top of the heau; the sides remain very open in order to leave room for the ban- desux and curls. The crown is also larger, and the curtain narrower and not quite so full; id, as it no longer falls over the shoulders, it t needful to continue the ungraceful fasb- ion of raising it. Lace is almost entirely dis- carded as a decoration for the outside of bon- nets; on black velvet a bright-colored scarf of satin or velvet, fringed at the ends, is plaited and placed across the front, widening towards the ends and falling over the curtain. Al- though lace is almost entirely banished asa decoration for bonnets, it is profusely employed 88.8 trimming for all other articles of lane attire. The great manufacturer and exporter of Ca.abrai lace, Ferguson et fils, 40 Kue des Jeuneur, bas lately ex; this new style of lace, which in vogue, and which forms a durable and ele- gant garmiture for mantles and robes. We have accounts from Bahia of the falling off of the diamond mines within the last few months, as quite alarming: those who visit the magnificent jewelry establishments of this cap- ital will not beli in a scarcity of the pre- cious stones. The jewels mounted and arran, by Baudin, 7 Rue de Ia Paix, in Preparation for the Court presentations, surpass anyt rq of the kind we have ever seen, in richness, lightness, and grace. Corals are formed to represent the flowers of the fuchsia plant, while the leaves are of enamel or emeralds. The vogue for goldenornaments in apartments, and particularly for the dinner table, has much increased of late years. The exquisite porcelain dinner services exe- euted in the atelier of Lahoche & Co., 162 Galerie de Valois. Palais Royal, are always accompanied by dessert decorations of erystal, mounted and gilded in an extravagantiy ex- pensive style. The ormolu, of which these ornaments are made. isa rich material; it is not only more beautiful but much more dura- ble than the old-fashioned gilt. The lamps, chandeliers, and candelabras, made by La- hboche, are composed of ormolu, sometimes mixed with bronze. The ingenious perfumer, Faguer, 83 Rue de Richelieu, has composed several new odors with which to scent the beautiful sackets that are ow very much embroidered in his workshop. These sackets form — and rich New Year’s gifts; those of w jite satin worked in Is are Bu- perb; others are embroidered wihoud beads, representing the small red fruits. Tus Saa at Gaeat Dertas. —Popular ideas Pech oni to sinking of bodies in the sea, have heretofore been vague ; for the reason, perhaps, that the laws which govern this descent, ad which isderived from the well known laws of fluids, hi never been fully defined in their applica to the depths of the ocean. Some imagine that ships which founder at sea, sink to @ certain depth. and there float about until broken to pieces. or thro: upon some bank beneath the sea; and, indeed, a recent writer in Engiand bas published a book sustainitg this absurd notion. Others again believe that the buoyant forces of the water at great deptbs. fs enormous, and due to the whole pressure of the column of water above, and that all bodies whieh are lighter than water at the rurface, will, if sank to the bottom and detached from thesinker, shoot upward with a great velocity ; or, in other words, that the density of the wat r increases directly with tho depth. These vie are erroneous. It is true that pressure ¢reases with the depths, to the amount of fifteen upon square inch; for every. thirty-iour feet in depth ; but the density i¢ not thereby sensibly increased, owing to the ingom - ressibility of the water; so that neither the yant force, nor the resistance to the motion of any body, are sensibly iacreased from the surface to the bottom. At the depth of 3,000 fatboms, for instance, the pressure upon & square inch is nearly 8 000 pounds, out the column of 18.000 fect of water, Pont shortened about 60 feet; the density is thus but sli tly increased ; but the effect of this enormous sure upon such bedies as wood, Ac., is tacon- dense their balk, by which they ma: ren- dered heavier than water, and will sink oftheir own weight. A piece of wood cannot fidat at the bottom of the sea, bat a very slight extra- neous foree will bring it to the surface.—$i/is- rea-. VOL. Xill. NEGRO PULPIT "TS IN NEW ° It was not many moons ago that the sable sops and daughters of Africa in this quiet city by'the Delaware, were stirred up to their dark est depths by the advent of a distin- African pulpit orator from Pittsburg. in the day appointed for the ng forth, pulpit stage, erected in @ Druid-like grove bear the city, between two venerable osks, was crowded with the colored heralds of glad ti- dings ‘belonging to ‘de Messodist ° Chureh.’” Beneath and ®round it lay a da ness which, like that of Egypt, might O — “ feit’’ besa I may add, — t, avi ter the opening prayer by a venerable preacher, upon whose black sconee the white wool lay in patches like hoar frost, a you’ athletic negro, with a face shining like polish ebony, and the crisp, short curl of the wool only to be seen in real Guinea breed, ad- vanced to the pulpit desk. He evidently felt that bis fame had gone before as he looked over that dusky mass, now hu: to admiring silence at his presence. The sable Chrysostom then announced his text, which came forth so- norous and strong through the ivory gateway of the whitest teeth that ever ope: for the admission of hog and hominy.’ ‘“ My text, my bruddern,’’ said he, ‘‘ may be found in de sixth verse of de gospel for de day— Put not Your trust in princes’ ” In a most glowing exordium, he ined the meaning of the word princes as hay: ing ref- erence to ‘de profane petseey of dis world; for,”’ said he, ‘‘dere are but two kinds of great men in de Holy Book dat are mentioned —holy — and profane princes. Y., on Friday last, the police found the dead body of a woman lying on the floor with a bag of shavings under its hind Near it was standing, weeping, a little son 8 yearsold The body sent to Potter’s field, and as a strange chapter in the history of life, the New York Express publishes the following statement given by the Vittle boy: His father was Col Thomas ie gies of Bos- ton, formerly of the United States army. Le was afterwards confined in a Lunatic Asylum in France, for insanity, where he cut his throat, and thus ended bis life. Tommy recol- lected going with his mother to see his father at the ‘Crazy House,’’ when his fat! said, ‘Emma, look at this ——”’ and time he pulled a great long Dutch knife out of his shirt bosom, and attempted tocut er’s throat. Tommy said his fa: her, Colonel Hughes, waz his mother’s second husband, her former name being Emma Jane Terrance. He could recollect when his mother kept house. Sho then sold ber furniture and boarded at the Prescott House, and went from there to the Metropolitan Hotel, (about a year ago, a8 near- ly as he could recollete,) when she commenced rinking Holland Re, Subsequently, she left the Metropolitan Hotel, and led in Mott street; there she commenced to drink brandy, and finally moved to Mulberry street, where she wasfounddead. He says that she threat- ened to kill him atone time; but be escaped by screaming, when the neighbors camein and saved him. All the money she could get into her possession she used to buy rum with, ard neglected to procure provisions; and he had nothing but a crust of broad and water, ora little coffee daily to subsiston. She had sold and pawned every article of her clothing, and everything she possessed, to satisfy her craving for drink. The little fellow ssys that his father has considerable property, of which he should re- ceive a part; and that itisnowin a law suit. He has a half brother, who he says, ran awa: from his mother, and is now living with his grandmother, Mrs. Terrance, in one of the western St Tommy also gave a minute account of his mother’s death, which took place on Thursday evening. About 5 o'clock, while she was | ng on floor, she commenced groaning as if in great pain, saying at times, “Ob, Thomas! Ob, 1 He asked ber what wasthe matter with her several times. before she noticed him. She then asked him to draw her near the fire, which he did after reatexertion. After this, she sleptabout an eae and then waking asked him where he had been, commenced staring wildly about her. He replied, “ By you, mother.’ The said, “No, you wasn’t,’” Immediately she commenced shaking, which soon ceased. She then intimated to him by signs that she wished him to kiss her, which he did. She then drew her limbs up and jay uiet. Shortly afterwards a woman came into the room and said, “ But [I you mam’s dead.” He then placed bisband on her heart to feel its and afterwards ear to her mouth to bear whether she breathed. pose afterwards Capt. Dowling came and took the body to the station house. ——————-2+e-—_____— 1D™ It is stated that the Columbus ‘Obio) Statesman hat beea purchased by Col.
