Recertion oF Senator Dovcias —Some bun- dred and fifty people were at the cars at seven o’clock, last evening, on the arrival of Judge Douglas, and, on bis stepping upon the platform, he was received with cheers aud hand-shaking by the group more immediately about him, while the greater part of the assemblage contented themselves with looking on as passive specta- ters. Mr. Douglas was accompanied by Hon. Reverdy Johnson, Jervis Spencer, and other old- line Whigs of Baltimore, and by John W_ For- ney, and others, who left this city yesterday, to escort him to Washington. No speech-making was entered upon at the Depot, bee it xeemed to be understood that some might be expected at the residence of Mr. Douz- jas, and bitber the party scrambled through the + knee-deep mad of Swampoodle. A few, whose devotion to squatter sovereignty was not quite equal to the emergency, backed out on reac! ing the creamiest of the English-Hill alfavium ; but mnost part of the bundred and fifty, including the poor devils of reporters (bound to go, *- weather or po,’") struggled and straggled on, aided by the light of some burning tar barrels, which had Lr ore upou a gravel bank in the neighbor- h Arrived at the house, things looked rather * gloomy; the muste for the serenade bad not ar- tived, and a drizzling rain commenced to fa!l. After some time spent in waiting upon the side- walk, and which was enlivened the whoops and rallying cries of rival squads of Englisb Ht boys, some — unknown to the audience emerged from the door and annonnced that in consequence of the sndden death of Generali Hen- derson they had hren deprived of the services of the masic engaged but trat Mr. Douglas would now address thein Mr. Dougias then came forward, accompanied by some indoor friends, and briefly addressed the crowd from the steps. As it was raining seme one called out, « Paton your bat, Judge ”’ A policeman bere stepped forward and spread his umbrella over the Little Giant. But this was not quite satisfactory, and the policeman was called upon to “hold the amberil stret "7 Mr. D., resuming, said that bis heart was in- deed ailed to ove:flowing by this unexpected and spontaneous reception of Lin friends, on bix return home—for next to !linois, his sdopted State, there was no place upon the face of the earth where he felt as much at home as he did in Washington city. That State bad received him when @ bey, with open arms, bad wurtured him to manhood, bad honored him with high public trusts, and bad stood by him in all bis measures up to the present day, and the (gece hour. For sixteen years he had been in the publie service of that State, and the greatest joy of his heart was th: s oficial conduct bad met with the approvation of ber citizens up te the present time. He was fresh from his constituents, and, mext to their approbation, was this reception Most gratifying to his heart This, and the cor- tial receptions he had met with along his route hither, showed that the beart of the American people was ever found right when its cords were touched by the hand of patriotism He said that the peopie of the District of Columbia, althongh they had no voice in the National Legislature, bad ever maintained a patriotic conservatism. which had exerted a salutary influence on the Politics of the country. As he expected to be among them now, for some time, he would be; to take leave of them for the Preseat, and bi them good-night On the conciusion of Mr. Donglas’s remarks, there was aloud call for “ Broderick,” which was not responded to; another for “ Fitnam,’’ which failed to fetch that gentleman; and then one for “« Watson,” the policeman with the um- brella, which clicited the best grin and bow of that officer ~ The assemblage then scattered. Several cir- cumsiances combined to render the reception ra- ther inauspicious, not the least of which was the *byness displayed by the quasi supporters of Judge Douglas here in coming up to the seatch of publicly ideatifying themselves with his po- litieal fortunes. Later im the evening, the Baltimore committee and otbers called upon Mr Douglas, and were handsomely entertained This committee consists of the followin gea- tlemen: Jetvis Spencer, chairman, an old-line Whig, an able lawyer, not much known in polit- ical circles; Hon. Heary May, a Democrat, lately an applicaat for the mission to Turkey ; George Cassard, formerly a quiet Whig; L. wv Wolfe, a Democrat of not very extensive influence; Dr W. 5S. Reese, formerly a Democratic officebold- er, and said to have been subsequently an appii- cant for office ; John M_ Tormey, a young Dem- ccratic lawyer; T. 8. Rogers, latterly a Demo- erat; AF. Musselman, a Pennsylvanian of free- soil proclivities; Patrick McCauzhlin, formerly a Whig ; Cod. John Walton, a Whig, from An- —— Edwin Boyle, also from Apnapolis. be names of Levin Ballard and Charles H Moore have been associated with those of the committre here, but whether with their sanction OF not, we are unable tosay. We are in doubt as to Mr. Ballard’s former politica. Mr. Noore is said to bave been a Democrat formerly. Besides these, Messrs Reverdy Johnson, an old line Whig; T. Yates Walsh. altereately a Whig and Democrat: and L. P. Bayne, G. W Brown, Col G. P. Thomas, Thos. M. Canahan, iitics unknown; Capt. Br-sce, a Democrat; arville Stansvury, aud Dr J. Nelson, politics unknown, arc ramed as members of the com- mittee; putwsthey did net come on with the Quest, and as far #s we can learn, took no part in eny of the proceedings, it is not clear as to whether they endorsed the movement or not. In the above. those acquainted with Baltimore eat) discover that a majority bave identifi d with a certain clique who beeame very mueb d siffected two yracs ago because Mr. Malcolm was not nominated as the Democratic candidate for Congress from the Third Congres sionel district instead of Wm Pinckney Whyte. Mr. M ving been formerly a Whig, as most of them aiso were, they adhered tohim is his oppo- sition to Mr. Whyte. We can safely say they by no mens represent the Democracy of Baltimore, and that their present disaffection is probably a cause of congratulation with the real Democrats of that etty. We uaderetand that preparations are on foot to give Mr Douglas a rand dinner in Baltimore at an early day, at which, it is pro sed, every county in the State of Maryland shall have a rep- resentative. Mr. D. is said to bave signified bis willinguess to accept the invitation. Accipentat Homicipe —Last night, about 10 o'clock, while it was raining heavily, watchmen King and Rabbitt, whose beat includes Seventh street, near H, went into a barber shop kept by a colored maa named Martin, to get out of the rain While sitting there, the revolver in Rabbitt’s Pocket was disclosed by his cout being open. A eclored man named James Taliy, seeing the stock, asked Mr. Rabbitt to let him see it. Rab- birt let bim have it, and Talley being about to [re bis thumb on the hammer, Rabbitt warned im against cocking it; and at the instant the hammer, being pa:tially raised, bisthamb slipt, the load was discharged, and the ball entered the face of Thomas HKrown, colored, a partner in the shop, penetrati upwards to the brain, causing instant deat The two men were pertners in the business, had never had a diffl- culty in their lives, and the moment before were joking good humoredty together. Officers Kiog and Rabbitt remained until Of- ficers Gormley and Suitcame. The facts were related by Oficer King and Tally, who was ap- Pony Miserable on account of the mishap ‘ally was taken to the guard-house to await the Tesult of the inquest. Capt Goddard was then informed of the cane. and directed the body to be removed to the residence of bis father, on Third street, near New York avenue. Tue District ix Concruss.—In the Senate yesterday. in response to a memoria} from eiti- aens of this District, Mr. Brown, from the Com- mittee on the District of Columbia, reported a bill to prevent malicious mischief and protect Property ia the District of Columbia. The community was greatly shocked last by the announcement of the sudden death of General Henderson. The deceased had been Talkies shes apparently in his usual health a Returned from along waik about 4 o’clock p. m , bis usual dinner hour, and feeling somewhat fatigued, be seated himself on a sofa in a reclining posture, with his head rest- ing on an arm of the sofa. The servant, on ring- ing the dinner bell, observed that he did not appear to notice it, and went torouse him. He ‘was discovered to be dead. Not a feature of his face was changed, ~— from the natura! disposi- tion of the limbs, it was apparant that death came without a struggie, and the good man and brave soldier had passed to his final rest without tga chp onion | Tespect the bitterness of death. The was bora in the year 1783, in the town of Dumfries, Virginia, and entered the ser- vice of this country in 1806, bei then twenty- three years of age. Iu the register at the Adjutant’s Office, Marine Barracks, we find the following entry:—‘‘Archi- bald Henderson commandant, Brigadier-General by brevet, 4th of March, 1843, to take rank from January 27th, 1837, for gallant and meritorious services while in command of the marines in Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee, during the campaigns against the hostile Indians.’? Inuoman Treatment —This morninz, Thos. E. Ki:kland was arrested by Officer Freeman and taken before Justice Williams, of the north- ern police station, for inhuman and brutal treat- ment of acolored boy in his eget one It appeared from the evidence that K rkland had very severely whipped and beaten the boy at an early bonr this morning, and his cries caused the complaint of neighbors or passers-by, and Free- man went to the house about 10 o’clock and made the arrest. The boy was tied band and foot, and with arope round his neck fastened to nails in the wall, and had been there since 7 o'clock. When cut loose he fell on the floor, and. the Justice thought a few minutes longer would have ended hix life. Kirkland also had a white hey in his employ, named Peters, and when Freeman went to make the arrest he said he overbeard Kirkland tell Peters to swear that he (Peters) tied the colored boy uf, and Peters did so testify on the trial. But he afterwards said that Kirkland made him do it Justice Williams committed Kirkland to jai in order to secure Peters as\a witness, he was committed also The colored boy is apparently 15 years of age; Peters about the same. After Kiraland left in custody of the officer, several persons named witnesses Who might have been semmoned. The previous reputation of Kirktand as a respectable man, and the outraye- ous character of the case as detailed by the wit- nesses, caused considerable excitement in the vicinity of the Justice's office. Tue AsricvtturaL Boarp again assembled at the Patent Office this morning, and received reports of the various sub-committees, upon the list of questions submited to the Board for re- vision and perfection. The Commissioner of Patents then communt- cated to the Board the fullowin;r resolutions just received by bim, from the Agricultura! cominit- tee of the House of Representatives: Resolved, That the Commissioner of Patents ‘be requested to communicate to this committee a Teport of the proceedings of any convocation or advisory board of agriculture that may have been organized at his request and with tue sanction of the Secretary of the Interior; and that be be also requested to elicit from such beard, and commu- nicate in like manner, a statement of the char- acter and capabilities for usefulness of the past and preseat operations of the agricultural divis- ion of the Patent Office, together with en expres- sion of the views of said board in regard to snch improvements as they may deem calculated to enbance its efficiency in promoting the agricul- tural interests of the country.
