A WOMAN F NERVE. ow She Get Out ef a Scrape. A tall, slender figure, with brown hair fall- ing over the shoulders, and a pale, resolute face, clad in a long, flowing, ing gown, and holding a light high above its head, and looking steadily down at me, as I ascended the stairs—this was what I saw as I went up te my room in the Spread Eagle Inn, Grace- ebareh street, on the night of the 18th of Sep tember, 1848, as I am a Christian! 1 stopped short and looked at the figure, as it was looking at me. 1 bad not been drink- ing, I was not walking in my sleep, and mote than all, I knew the face and form—but what. in the name of common sense, was a young lady doing im the of an old inn at that bour, alone, and in such a dress? She blushed scarlet as I drew near, wrapped her dress- ing gown more closely around her; but the next moment she was as aoa as before, and spoke to me eagerly and hurriedly, but in a very low voice. “Sir, are you the landlord of this inn?” “I am not, madam.”’ ** Do you know where he is?”’ ‘Down stairs in the coffee room, I think. But whatisthe matter? Are you ill? Has anything gone wrong?” She stamped her foot slightly with impa- tience, and looked me full in the face. Fine eyes she had—blue and soft in general—but now they were blazi “Don't stop to a questions, sir! Bring him here at once; and come back with him Yourself. Bring pistols, if you hi them; do ou hear? And run for your life—for your jife!’’ she added, leaning over the bannisters, and speaking in the same low, hurried tone. I was away in an instant, though I knew no more of my errand than the man in the moon. Bat I should like to see the man who would not have done thesame. Apart from the fact that she was claiming my aid and protection, there was something in the ring of the voice, low as it was, and the flash of the eye, that warned me she was not to be trifled with. She ral had she been ind I wager my head, not a soldier would have dared to retreat, had she spoken as she did to me that night. But before I fin- ish my story, I must begin it. I am but a biundering fellow. My wife always says, if a mistake can be made, I am sure to make it; and I believe I was going to tell you about the landlord’s coming, before I said what he had come for. Now, then, I will commence the thing rightly. The Spread Eagle Inn, which is still stand- ing, and may be seen any day, by the curious traveler, is a clumsy, ill-lighted house, sit- usted in the heart of the city, yet keeping all ite oddities, which were just in the fashion some two or three hundred years - It is built around a court-yard, shut te by gates, across which galleries are thrown, from one door to the other, with the paved yard below. It bas balustrades and staircases containing sufficient oak to build half a modern house with, and deep window seats and big, queer shaped gloomy rooms, and odd little closets, and landing places and passages. chairs, car- ts, and pictures that Mrs. Noah might have ‘opt house with in the ark, to say nothing of the curious old china on the si je-boards, and the wine glasses and decanters to match. To an Englishman, it offers the snuggest of homes, and the roast beef and mutton there are unex ceptionable; while the waiter is as civil as if he had beon breathing the atmosphere of the old place for years. It makes one feel < je,’’ merely to live there for a time; aud I, whohad been a wild enough college lad, found myself sobering down, day by day. as I pored over m: manuscripts, or dived quietly, by fe pecs under the eye of Charles, the waiter, my slice of mutton and baked tatoes, my piat of porter, and my apple or lamson tart! Quite like a family man t felt, at times—though my wife and children were with my ship, it was to come home some day, aud bring me an immense fortune. I did not know how long the voyage might take, not knowing even from what port the vessel was to start, and so I lived under the wings of the Spread Eagle, and worked at my manuscript and waited. I was not, es any means, the only dweller in the eyrie. People were coming and going all the time, but { scarcely ever saw them, or heard their names. The sitting room next miae, on the second floor, would be tenanted one month by a couple with an indefinite num- ber of children; and the next, it mey be, by an old gentleman, who made no noise, and rarely spoke, except to tell his servant to bring more wine; then would come a traveling artist, with his sketeh-books, and his great Newfoundland dog, and they would play at rough-and-tamble together, after he had done work, till the house shook. and the nervous lady above ly went ear- ts; and he would succeeded by a ma: , who would play all day and a part of the night, until the same lady declared she should be ready for Bedlam; but she never was ready, and never went—at least to my knowled; For my t, I was always satis- fied. When ibocbilanen tae there, and play- ing so noisily that [ could not think, 1 used to lay down my pen and wonder what their names were, and how they looked, and if they were laying the same games I played in my boy- Pood (30 many years ago!) with my brothers and my cousins. The great dog used often to meet me in the p: and give me a friendly wag of the tail, if I patted bis head, and after that bis bark was music in my ears; for I defy any one, who has a heart, to make the ac- quaintance of a dog—a Newfoundland, espe- cially—and not love him And the composer, who played all day the sweet creations of his soul—God knows what loving tender fancies came to me now and then, as the melody wove iteelt in with what I was writing, almost be- fore L knew it. Iam ppy fellow, natural- ly, and disposed to make the best of every- jing; bat setting this entirely aside, I am sure { was a better and a kinder man for the neighbors I had. One day the room was taken, after it had been standing empty for a week, and 1 heard the voices an old man, his wife, and the fresh, clear tones of a younggir!. I oftenjudge people by their voices before I see them, and I — the lady to myself, quite correctly. eye was ring in her words, a buoyant, lark- li tone, that gave me the idea of a happy and perfect health. Now and then the voice deepened and softened, and deepened, and I Knew that her face had lost its smile, and that she was SE ¢ grave—porhaps sad. So I knew that she had suffered. and as day after day went on, and the voice grow familiar, I judged that she had suffered deeply. There was something behind that natural gayety, kaown only to herself and God it may be, and yet it threw — over her whole life, and would always do so. And [ thought I should like to see her, and judge if my surmises were correct. ns I asked the landlord about the party. He looked at the book, aod read the names, “Rey. Edward Williams and lady. Mrs. Arnolx, New York city.” - * They are Americans, then ?’’ I exclaimed. “So itseems. They came here three weeks *g9, by the packet, and are going to Parisnoxt month. Very nice people they seem, but they have queer ways. All Americans have, I am often told.” ““Yes—they seem odd to us no doubt,’ I said masingly—scarcely knowing what 1 had answered. And then J went up to wy room, and wondered if Mrs. Arnold was widow, or if ber husband was atill living. If so, I felt strongly inclined to strangle or shoot him, without any delay. It is very ridiouluus—yet also, quite sincere—the feeling one wan bas to- wards saother who (as he thinks) has robbed him of something whieh mizht have beatified hivown life Tamaure many a married womin would laugh heartily if she but kuew the faneies peed through the brain of one of her bacb-/ ends, who admires her, as ho sees her y * child in ber arms, or her sw. fare look - ‘ng over her husband's shoulder (stupid map) come oret over a dry newspaper, quite ma * MD ER crt ae € VOL. XIII. While I sat thinking thus of Mr Arnold, Mrs. Arnold, in the next room, began to sing. There was # good piano in No. 42, and I had often heard her playing before. But this eve- ning she only snatches of sweet, sad songs, and I felt sure she was alone. Her touch upon the keys was soft and dreamy; sometimes she was playing with one hand then would come a long pause, though T had not heard her leave her seat. I would have given worlds to have beon beside her, in that hour of twilight. But it faded. and the cold of my room was still between us. I heard her si: “ Then you'll remember me,” y: softly, and then the music ceased. If 1 h: sat by myself any more, I am sure I should have been mad enough to go into the next room; 80, taking Ay hat and gloves, I went out fora a : 1 oor ee 42 stood _" way open, and from my end the passage could see into the room plainly, for the boy had just lit the gas, aud drawn the curtains. She was standing over the piano, dressed in di P mourning, though a wedding ring and its heavy uard shoneon her lefthand ‘Thank heaven, the fellew is dead,” I thought; and then the next moment I laughed at my absurdity. Sho had the evening paper in her hand, yet though her head was bent, I could see her tace quite well. In only one thing was she different from her counterpart in my brain—she was not beau- tiful, as I had fancied she must be. She was tall and straight, and ant in form; and her face was one of those which change and vary with every shade of feeling; but only redeemed from plainness by a pair of deep set and beau- tifully shaped eyes, whose color, I found, when she threw the paper aside, was that dark love- y blue, one scarcely ever sees, except in the sky of a summer night. Just res I had dreamed of all my life—and yet, was not the slightest chance that they would ever look , a8 they had doubtless looked at Mr. Arnold, deseased, a thousand times. She was girlish widow—yet there was something in her manner which betrayed the married wo- man—an ease and uploms, which rarely or never shows iteelf in a young girl, especially if = _ been reared carefully bya mother’s and. I mizht have stood in the passage all night, critici her, had she not entaied it herself, suddenly (for movements were all as quick as flashes of light) and taking me so by surprise, that I am sure she would have seen me staring in at her, had she not luckily for me, caught her foot in the mat as she crossed the thresh- old. She stumbled, end would have fallen, but I gee oe her assistance and caught her, and felt her heart heating quickly against my arm. She panted with the sudden start it had given her, bat stood upin a second, and just glancing at me as I stood beside her in the dark Pe , said quietly, “Thank you, Charles. might have hurt myself very inuch, if you had not saved me. And by the way, I wish you would have that stupid thing taken away. My anole fell over it last night, and I suppose it will be my aunt’s turn next.” She ran lightly ap the stairs to her sleeping- reom, laughing to herself as she went. She had mistaken me for the waiter! But I did not care (though I fancied there was some dif- ference in our height and air) since it had given me the pleasure of hearing my own name, and spoken by her lips. . | deolare-sol~ emuly, to this dey, that when Mrs. Cathcart (my wife) calls me Charles, an odd feelin; comes over me, and I see the hall of the aocad id Arnold running up the stairs, and in a state of maudlin ad tion below. So much for the power of association. I went to the Opera that evening. I usually spent my evenings there, or at the theatre, because [ had no acquaintances in the city, and it was dull sitting in my room alone. They played the “ Bobemian Girl,” I remem- ber, and the tenor sung Mrs. Arnold’s song, “Then you'll remember me.’’ And the lights, and the music, and the crowd seemed to pass away, and leave me listening to her again, touching the piano softly, and half singing, half humming the words, as if she trusted her- self to utter them aloud, they would surely bring tears with them. I thought of her con- stantly till the opera was over, and the house ; I thought of her over my hot supper at ; and 1 thought of her as I went home ig the deserted streets. I looked up at her window to see the light there, as I entered the court yard. It was burning brightly enough, and I entered the house, and sat down in the coffee room a few moments with the landlord, who was a great friend of mine, in his way. I did not k to him, nor he to me—we were neither of us talking men, and seldom had many words togeth But he peered over the morning fay steadily. intent upon political news; an held mine upside down before me, and felt with a thrill of basbfal satisfaction, that I was no longer indifferent to the advice of Mr. Weller, senior—‘ Samivel! Samivel! bevare of the vidders!’’ No; a widow had chan, me in the twinkling of an eye, and I was in love, as hopelessly, as unreasonably, and as foolishly as any sober man of thirty eould well be! My enemies not content with endeavor- ing to ruin my political prospects, have ussas- sin-like attempted to blast my good name by their insidious reports.’ Abner then stated what the rumor was, and continued: ‘I re- joice, fellow citizens, to have it in my power instantly to fasten the lie upon this malicious and atrocious slanderer. I see among you one of the most estimable citizens of this county, whoee character for truth and integrity is above question, Squire Schooler, to whom I allude, is acquainted with all the facts, and I call on bim here to state whether this rumor is true or false. I pause for a reply.’ Whereupon Squire Schooler slowly arose, and in his strong, slow and sonorous voice, said, ‘ I rather think you did it, Abner!’ ‘ You old scoundrel '’ ex- claimed Abner, ‘why do you interrupt me I’m discussing great constitational ques- tions, with your low personalities?’ And he acommpanied this objugatory exclamation with such a ‘ surge’ of gesticulation that he stepped back bejeua the platform, fell backward ona big dog, amid the howls of which, and the deaf- ening roars of the ‘ sovereigns,’ the meeting was effectually bro! up.” Buoug Revisson.—It is wn tbat Dr. Newmanis appointed to prepare a new Roxvish version of the Sacred Scriptures, = Loam £ ready a large oganisation exists in this country that,is phe F upon anew version of the Bible. under the direction of several accomplished scholars, many ot whom ha‘ ne abroad to prosecute their work under the most favorable auspices. - Dr. French, the Dean of Westminster, dis- cusses the subject of Bible revision with great learning and ability in his last published work; he br ns to t! @ subject a vast amount of exact knowledge.
