$e EVENING STAR. The New Route to the South West—Avonia -Jenes—The Ustion Trade of Memphis, Correspondence of tha Star. Gayoso Hovsz, Mevrnis, Tenn., Dee. 7. From the Federal city to the “young giant” of the West, is now but a mere trifle of a trip. Science and enterprise have brought thesetwo sities within less than three days of each other and over one of the smoothest, most substantial lines of railway in the world. This is a great ement, verily a great achsevement. From Watiogion City to Lynchbarg via the ping and Alexandria, the Virginia Central, the Kichmond and Danville, and the Southside railroads, and thence via the Virginia ana Tennessee through the tiful, nd, and fertile region of the South side of V’ ‘ia; the Bast Tennessee and Virginia from the South- western extremity of Virginia through @ fine region of country to Knoxville; the Kast Ten- nessee and G: ‘a through the eastern valley of Tennessee, a delightful and fertile valley— and particularly that along the Holston and Sweetwater—to Dalton: the Georgia State road to Chattanooga; and the Memphis and Charles- be on ooanen point ~~ emphis, is one of most delightfal trips I have ever enjoyed. The idea of cold weather, snow and sl ae in pep ers tains, — rod ena moment was most delightedly = nothing of the nae ‘Tbe weather was only moderately cold, and the cars sped along with- out the least hindrance and as smoothly as we could desire. So mach so, in fact, that at night —to use a vulgar expression—I slept like a brick; and during the day, I wrote and read all the way. Among my fellow travelers was Mrs. Me- linda Jones, and her beautiful and accow- lished daughter, Miss Avonia Jones, who, I lieve hail from your city. They arrived with me on Saturday evening, and appeared phis,) in at Crisp’s Gaiety, (che theatre of Mem Romeo and Juliet. Mrs. Jones was too much indisposed to go through with the Piece, and after the second act, Mr. W. H. Crisp apolo- gised for ber and took the character. Miss wonio is @ fine tragic actress, and being a beautiful woman, appears to great advantage on the stage. Her appearance was greeted with loud and prolonged applause, and she was repeatedly and again applauded during the perfurmance. Mother and daughter go hence to Savannah in about two weeks, thence to Now Orlesns, and from there to California. The weather is very mode: here at this time, ‘and the whole levee i red with cot- ton bales, which are being sold and shipped here very rapidly. Memphis is second this season, in point of cotton receipts, only to New Orleans. heliaiel Jawism Disanizities ix Norta Carontna — Nortb Carolina is the only State in the Union that excludes Jews from holding offices of profit ot trust within its limits. Many ineffectual efforts have been made to remove this Proscriptive fea- tare from the Constitution ofthe ‘State, and a res- olution to this effect bas engaged the attention of the Legislature now in session, but has failed to receive its favorable action. The House Commit- tee, to whom the subject was referred, have made @ singular report, which, admitting that the proposed; reform is desireable, and that the re- striction upon the Jews is bigoted and unjust, and contrary to the principles of a republican government. nevertheless deem it inexpedient to alter the constitution by legislative enactment in any particular whatever, because, as they say. the people of the State have expressed no desire for a change. ee ee , i> In many parts of New York city Hquors ate adulterated toa fearfulextent. The Evening Post says thata few weeks since aman drank three cents worth of brandy, which proved fatal imfour hours. But somehow the law has failed to reach the matter. The inspector of the Thir- teenth precinct took a plan to procure the most conclusive testimony in regard to the quality of the liquor. He sent out policemen to Teport vio- lations of the law, providing them with vials, and when they saw anybody drink and pay for liquor they took a portion of the sam-, put itin a vial, sealed it up, and marked on it the time and place of sale. The vials were taken by the captain, to be handed to the court to determine tbe character of the contents, whether camphene ordrinkable liquor The collection now on hand would be an interesting subject for ¢hemical analysis eR —— “Pury Sav.’’—There is 2 decision in the last volamo of Gray’s Reports, which is at once sound morals and good law A woman, sued for slan- der, was defended on the ground that she only re- peated, aad without malice, wha! was currently reported. The Court beid that to repeat a story that Is false and slanderous. no matter how wide- ly it may have been circulated, is at the peril of the tale-bearer. Slander cannot always be traced to its origia. Its power of mischief is derived from its repetition, even if a disbelief of the sto- ty accompanies its relation. Indeed, this half doubtful way of imparting slander is often the surest method resorted to by the slandererto give eurrency to his tale. ARRIVALS AT THE HOTELS.
