Mit:tary IxstReerion —Last night being set apart for instruction of the officers and men of the District Regiment by the Colonel com- manding, at the request of some of our good- looking wemssay! A peaepae we visited the Colum- bian Armory. ben we arrived in the drifl- Toom, we found two fine stoves in glowing con- dition, the lower ball illuminated, and from twenty to twenty-five persons stand! about the stoves impatiently waiting the order to ‘fall ia'?? The party constituted a «quad of intelligent fel- lows of very waggisbh propensities, ready for a joke at every opportunity, and con uently a roar of bearty laughter would frequently resound through the hall. While talking with this party, the instructor—a man of small stature, of venera- ble as well as modest zppearance—a; proached and in the most vaassumlng manner, requested the gentlemen to take muskets and prepare for dill. Nearly all complied with the Fequest. Some were excused by playing “old er,”? one having rheumatism very badly, and others were variously affected—most, in fact, were on the sick list The drill was commenced with the training of the individual soldier, and progressed to a bat- talfom movement, illustrated by a platoon of sev- enteen men. The instructor seemed to be :ather slow to explain the illestrations he would make. seeming to be desirous of remembering theexact explanation in the book—consequently the move- ments were burried by the men who were tired of the one spot and position in which they stood. The explanation of tue manual of a:ms were al- most literally taken from the book—the men ap- peared to know the theory perfectly, but their Practice was irregular—most or them being in too great haste to perfurm the motions ‘he drill, however, was very well for beginners—as they are presumed to be. The Colonel was called upon to explain the object of those drilis by a sergeant, whotbought that the drilis, so fir, bad not been what the men expected. Tle object was stated to be the im- provement of (he oficers of companies as wellas the men; they all needed practice; and be re- marked that be himself needed practice, and he particularly desired to meet them for that pur- pose. Satz og Caoice Paintixcs.—The collection of off paintings to be sold on Monday night at the Art Association rooms,we can conscientionsly commend, since It is made up very largely of such gems of art by Stanley, Mcleod and otbe:s, as bave already been on exhibition in this chy, and bave won their ‘ition as such after passing the ordeal of critical examination. For instance, we find bere that noble picture of Sta jey’s, “The Last of bis Race,” already noticed in ou; e: lamas; “The Trapper’s Cabin, or tue disputed Shot,” also by Staniey, an ‘interior’ admirable iu design, costume, and all the acce: writes, and with a minute sttention to details not always followed by this artist; ** Weod Creek,” Mary- land) a good thing from Lanman’s pencil; “Uap- a Jonn Smith landing with bis party at the esent site of Washington City,” by Stanley; jucks Fighting,” a Gea affair, by Stanley; “Centre Harbor, New Hampshire,”’ by McLeod, @ painting which lately attracted much attention at Galt’s; and so on to the extent of some forty pictures. Bat we must make special note of two exquisite things by McLeod, really the most de- lictous aifsirs we have seen tately, and which would giace any collection, we allude to Nos. 37 and 33 on the catalogue, views on Lake George and the Connecticut River, by McL-od. We envy the lucky bidder who ‘gets them But, in fact, the entire collection has a grade of merit very rarely met with in the same number of paintings brought tothe hammer. Whether in- tending to purchase or not, amateurs wil! find the colirctioa richly worth jaspection. The ex- hibition and salestoom 1s tastefully furnisued and Landsomely warmed, making it an iaviding Place of resort. . Poricae—Brfors Justice Williams —A number of grocers were up for neglecting to take out license according to law. In default of doing so they were sabjected to a fine of $5 58 each. Charles Posey was brougnt up again—this time for malicious mischief in having attacked the house of bis neighbor, and defaced the doors and walis. He bad not been tried. Antoine Daum, a German, was arrested for assaulting aud attempting to kill his wife The compizioant is a smali, mild looking wo- man, and when she appeared to testify against the prisoner yesterday afternoon, did so with great reluctance, botwithstanding the whole of the upper portion of her face was so black- ened and torn by the biows which her hus- band bad d-alt upon it, as to be absolutely sick eniag to wituess. The back part of ber head Was cut aod lacerated in a most shocking man- ber where he bad dashed it against the wails; and ber arms were livid, from the fingers to the stoulder, where he hed attempted to break them Tue poor woman's tale wes svon told, and a sor- rowfal one it was She znd her husband lived ja the same Louse with another married couple, named Frolich, and Froloch's wife had driven her busband out of the beuse and attempted to establish an illicit intercourse with the man Danm, as Daum’s wife averred, whom she had " naged to acquire influence over ‘The forsaken atiempted to remonstrate, and the resuit of it was the beating which we have spoken of, and Which she will bear marks cf months to come Daum Was committed to jail to answer for bis Villainy before a bizber tiibunal, where, itis to be hoped, he will meet sech Pposishment as he Tichly deserves. We von’r x xow how it is that Unitarian con- gregations should have such a preponderance of Pretty girls, but so it is; and in a short visit we paid last alght to the Fair of the First Uaiterian Cbaureb, at Galt’s late jewelry establishment, we we looked ts vain for an ugiy, or even a plain woman. It's all mystery to us; and another no- ticeable thing was that the whole appointments of the fair was were quite in keeping as regards beauty and taste. It iv 8 fair worth visiting.
