SPIKIT OF THE MORNING PRBSS. The Union, speaking of ‘The Richmond Whig and the Search Question,” apprehends that it is quite impossible to convince the Whang, the New York Evening Post, and some half dosen more Republican journals, that Great Britain has abendoned the right of search. Nevertheless, it states a few histor- ical facts on the subject for their edification. The Intelligencer contains an article of seven and a half columns on the “ Monroe Doctrine— its origin and purport.’ +e - > Hon. James B. Clay bas not exchanged Ashland, the home of Henry Clay, for land in Texas, and does not intend to part with it. i> We learn from the New York Day Book, that the Grand Jury in that city have found a true bill against James Stephens, charged with poisoning his wife. 7 A letter dated Nov. 23, reports the steam frigate Wabash at Alexandria, Egypt. Sbe had touched at Jaffa to yive some of the officers and mea an opportunity of visiting Jerusalem, end other places of interest in the Holy Land. The Officers and crew of the Mediterranean squadron were well. 2 ee eee {7 The steamsatp Arabi: t Halifax, brings us the Joyful intelligence that this steamer, which had been all but given up for lost, has turned up at ao Irish port—with all on board well. Her voyage must have been a terrible one, though; and the particulars, when they come along, will be of thrilling interest ress bas beea maie upon the at Colleze near Bladensburg, the Toofing on the first wing is now in active hands. ‘Several new build!ngs in and around Bladensburg are about being completed, and at various other Points between the College and Bladensburg, im- provements are perceptible. i> The case of deputy marshal Tyler, of De- trot, who bas undergone an examination before the U.S. Commissioner, oa the charge of shoot- ing Captain Jones, of the brig Cunard, has been concluded for the present. The Commis: ioner ordered the prisoner to be committed to the com- mon jail of Wayne county, to await the a: tion of the grand jury at the next June term of the Uni- ted States Circuit Court. Cuingse uGak Cayz —A meeting of the Chi- nese sugar cane prowers of W innebzzgo County, L., was held at Rockford on the Sth inst , when a large number of samples of sugar and syrup were offered comprising a variety of grades, some of which were reported as very fine. Two hun- dred gallons of molasses tothe acre of cane was mentioned a+ a fair crop. The cane bas been extensively cultivated in Lilinois the past season, and from facts at hand, says the Rockford Re- publican, it is shown that “syrup and sugar are destined to become as staple acticles of produc- Sion of this State as wheat.”’ (> According to advices from Havana, Gen. Garza bas made satisfactory atonement to Spain for the outrages and injuries done to Spanish residents in Mexico, and President Zuloaga had given the French Minister the fullest assurance that the demands of the Spanish Government against Mexico are to be complied with, includ- ing the payment of the Spanish debt, and indem- nity tothe families of the Spaniards who were the victims of the massacre of Cuernavaca. Thus ends the much vaunted war between those two countries “Jeeus Pipgs, or Pipe » Me.” — Stephen Massett will soon be in Washington, with bis popular “Song and Chit-chat of Travel.” Let him have a Kiudly greeting. The New York “Home Journal” speeks thus flatteringly of his Mosical lecture - Mr. Stephen Massett’s Entertainment —Nr. Massett made a bit, at Niblo’s, and we are satis- fled that his styie of entertainment will become popular—combining, as it does, the serious and comic in recitation and mirmic ¥, pathetic bal- lads readered with expression and feeling, anda sketchy, amusing, though brief, history of his Wanderings in all parts of the world. His read. ing of Hood’s -*Sonzg of a Shirt,” and the manner of bis delivery of Tennyson's “Charge of the Light Brige show that Le possesses elocu- onary powers ofa high order; while hisgraphic description of Lis personal adventures in British india entitles bim to some distinction asa keen observer. We were picased with his ballad sing- ing. Hood’s “{ remember,”’ and “Scenes of Home,’ music by je, Were given with mach expression, and d tue largest share of com- mendation. ‘Tue comic scene of the “ Lady of Lyous’’ was irresistibly droll, as was also the aceue at the Sacraimenio Theatre, of Master John “Sage Stack *?) The audience were extuusias- tic im their applause, and the announcement that 2B fepetition would take place in the coming week, was received with reat approbation. Tre Winans Steamer at BaLti nore —This nobie and interesting specimen of anarine archi- tecture is now rapidiy Progressing towards com- Pietion and Is expected to be ready for trial in ten days or two weeks at tue farthest Her smoke stocks, look out honse, and upper works are now all complete. OF PoBLic Printine.—We are in receipteg this ment, which was presented to Congress on thé 9th in- stant. It gives a very comfilete statement of the transactions of the office, ghpwing the entire amount of printing perf opgani- zation, and the progress made on various works ordered by Congress, which are not yet com- pleted. It contains tabular exhibits of the number of copies, quantities of pzperconsumed, amount of work done, and cost of all the docu- ments, severally and collectively. The report is gotten up with a great deal of care and skill, and contains numerous suggestions, which will enable Congress to greatly economize in the ex- pensive item of public printing, and that, too, without depriving the country of the advan- tages to be derived from the publicity of valua- ble reports, 4c. The remarks relative toorder- ing works to be printed, before they are written, acustom heretofore adopted by Congress toa considerable extent, are especially apropos. We shall allude to the report again, as our space will not now permit us to give abstracts even of the important information it contains. CouuIsion BETWEEN Two Meusers or Con aress.—An unfortunate collision cocurred this morning on Pennsylvania avenue, near Thir- teenth street, between Mr. English, of Indiana, and Mr. Montgomery, of Pennsylvania. The atement we have heard of the affair is that the former spoke to the latter in 2 friendly manner, when Mr. Montgomery returned an insulting answer. Upon this, Mr. English struck him in the face with his cane and knocked him off the pavement, and then walked off. Ashe was walking away, Mont- gomery threw a brick at him, which did not, however, take effect. Rewovat or Lanp Ovrices.—The Commis- sioner of the General Land Office has received advices from the registers and receivers at Far- ibault and Stillwater, in Minnesota, of the removal of their respective offices as follows: That from Faribault to St. Peter, and that from Stillwater to Cambridge, where it would open for business on the 15th inst. Tur Mexican Mrxister.—Senor Mata, the Minister of the Juarez faction in Mexico, has arrived in this city. He has, it is said, pleni- potentiary powers to make treaties and settle all difficulties between this Government and his own, if this Government shall see fit to recognize the political power he represents as the Government of Mexico. Tax Retirep Navat Orricers.—Itisstated that the President will send to the Senate for confirmation, on Tuesday or Wednesday next, the names of those naval officers placed on the retired list by the Naval Retiring Board, who, it is recommended, be restored to active ser vice. Tax Mexpers or Cononess friendly to the bill to pension the soldiers of the war of 1812, will hold a consultation at the Hall of the House of Representatives this evening, at 8 o'clock, to agree upon the proper steps to be taken to secure its passage.
