An Extraonpinany Cass ov Menpicacy.— About four months ago, a man of good address | made his appearance in this city, representing bimseif as an artisen from Philadelphia, out of employment, and soliciting charity from many persons. So earnest was his appeal, so pitiful his tale, and so expressive bis mortification at being compelled to depend upon the good offices of the benevolent for subsistence, that be completely won the hearts of alarge number of prominent citizens of Waxbington, who not only gave him material assistance im bis unfortunate condition, but their sympathies were elicited in his bebalf to the extent of receiving him into their houses and extending to him the hospitalities of the do- aestic circle. At the house of one gentleraan in ieular, this unfortunate was supplied with a ifal band, and bis poverty iuduced the Src solicitude on the part of thefamily. A time ago he disappeared from view, and it ‘was supposed he had either found friends, or pe re at his trade, and so he was grada- ally forgotten Nesg recently. however, the gentleman and his family, above referred to, @ visit to Phila- deiphia, and, while there, went one night to the Daring the performance, his little son, @ Very observing boy, called the attention of his father to a man seated in one of the private boxes; saying, ‘Papa, look! there is the man who was at our house, and to whom you gave money!*’ The father looked—and, presently, recognized his impovertshed friend seated in t! bex, dressed in the extreme of fashion; bis bands encased in a pair of white kids, and qporting a tremendous opera glass. There could be no mis- take atall; the face and form were the same, and the only marked change was in the outside covering of ibe starvi isan, which, erewhile, had looked somewhat threadbare and rusty, but now shone resplendent, fresh from the band of some credulous tailor; and this gay-looking, enteel, and well-dressed dandy had been, but a days before, the balf-starved object of deep solicitude of 3 large number of charitable Washb- ingtonians. it not take | for the kind- hearted giver of charity to get the idea through his bead that be bad been most thoroughly im- posed upon, and that this fellow was a “‘profes- stonal.’’ He left tbe Opera that night, an indig- nant, but a much wiser man. 7 be above case is probably but one out of thou- sands that occur dail cities, and particularily in the Federal City; and it teaches its lesson to all who allow themselves to be moved to com- assion by the cunaingly contrived tales of pro- » ares begging strangers.
