When they entered the house Sater had a drawn dirk in bis hand, which he attem to get rid of by dropping it on the floor. His « pal” had a five-barrel revolver. The police succeeded in arresting seven of them, namely : John Suter, Richard Harris, James Ennis, Chas. Loveday, Thomes Hoffman, and Loach Brian, who were nil sent tothe lockup. Meagher on Central Amertca.—In the spring of the present year, Mr. Thomas F. Meagher, accompanied by Col Paez, of Venezuela, made a visit to Central America, and for several months traveled much tbrough the forests and over the mountains of the different Republics. The result of their wander. ings and ponderings has been a series of narra- tives, the first of which will be delivered to-night in our bijou theatre (which, by-the-way, from this date, in control of its popular manager of last season) doubtiess toa large audience. A series of admirable paintings, each copied from sketches taken on the spot by Col Paez, will be exhibited at appropriate intervals, and will contribute in no little degree to the interest ef the entertainment, The second and last narrative will begin on Sat- urday evening. DEPREDATIONS ON THE Woop-Yarps —During a few weeks past several wood and coa! dealers have complained of the loss of their Property by thieves. The taking of enough to prevent imme- diate suff-ring does not seem to the cause of complaint. It is the larceny of wood in such quautities as indicate the intention of the thieves to l:y in @ winter supply, or to go into the busi- ness {tis a difficult matter te catch the d-pre dators ia such a way thot punishment can be in- Hicted by legal process. To tue PuBLic_—Washington City, Dee. 1, 185S: Perceiving from an account of the pro- ceedings in the Board of Aldermen, on Monday evening last, published in acity paper, that Al- derman Riggs took occasion to allude to the bill for the erection of a ma: ket-house in the Seventh Ward as being ‘Another Towles affair,’ 1 feel ed on to repel the insinuation against me, Personaily, involved therein. That there was nothing Whatever wrong in the manner in which I superintended the construction of the First Ward market-house, is evidenced in the fact of geet my bill for that service through ard of Aldermen, though it was opposed by Mr. Riggs, on the ground that there had been ho necessity for my employment. Now, the truth is, this ungenerous aspersion of Alderman Riggs upon me, was simply intended as aside blow at Mayor Magruder’s administra- tioa of our municipal affairs. It would have been far more manly and appropriate to his posi- tion in society for bim to have made that assault directly, where it was intended to cut, rather than upon me apparently. We cannot Say positively whose business it is to see to such matters, but one thing we do know, and that is, that with proper management, much of the pub- lic work which hes been done upon our streets recently might have been done ina manner that would have subjected our citizens te one hun- dred fold less trouble and inconvenience than has been inflicted upon them for several months it An affair that eerenesirea. in your city, fs pte quite a stir bere just now. A Waxbing- ton City Corporation contractor considerably edvanced in lite (of the First Ward) on Mon- day morning before last, professing to his family that he was about to go u a gunning excur. sion, absconded with two females of doubtfal reputation. The time for bis return, the suc- ceedin, AWednesday, passed off without tidings from him. His family became alarmed at his absence, which resulted in bringing to light an old pocket book that he had accidentally left ata polut where he he had hastily transacted some business, the contents of which paved the big to a fall revelation of bis proceedings. He had dis- posed of evidences of debt to 2 large amount, due biin by the Corporation for work done, put the proceeds in his pocket, and absconded, leav- ing several of the sub-contractors for work under him in the vocative, to the tune of some three to five thousand dollars, besides several sums of fifty dollars and upward, he had borrowed from his friends, unpaid. It was soon ascertained that the women had gone to Cincinnati, Ohio, and commenced the confectionery business. Some of his creditors followed them. Upon repairing to the street and house designated upon the card, they had ali their suspicions fully confirmed by finding their quondam friend snugly housed with the before- mentioned lassies. Their very unexpected ap- pearance was to him like a thunder clap on a clear day. To get rid of such unwelcome visit- ors to his new home, he soon compromised the matter of debt. in part, by transferring to them some two thousand or more dollars’ worth of Corporation scrip, which he still held. The gen- tlemen, feeling considerably elated, we suppose. at the unexpected success which had crowne: their labors, returned to Washington, leavin the gallant to the indulgences of his newly-foun home, and due reflections —_ the misery he has brought on his abandoned family. We have been requested by persons residing in Virginia, and who can reach our market only by way of the Little Falls bridge, to call the atten. tion of our corporation authorities to the miserable condition of the road leading thereto. \Ve were assured by gentlemen yesteidsy thats ne por- tions of it is in such a wretched condition as to be almost impassable. As this is the only reliable thoroughfare seeding to our city from Virginia, we sincerely hope that it will no longer be neg- lected. As the season has arrived when the pork and other species of heavy produce ins to come into our market from that quarter, it is all important that the matter should be attended to, and the road put in good order at once. At the dedication of the fine Lecture and Sab bath-school Room of the Metbodts: Protestant church, on Sunday afternoon last, Rev.
