Cri: lay the frost a field i meadow, and the po fhe tints of the just uprisen sun mellowed the distant mountain tops, and gilding tree and shrub with such sparkling refulgeuce that they shone like a glittering sheen of diamond drops The sheep were penned in their fold, just out from their night's shelter, and were nibblin, the fodder strewn about against the fence an round upon the sunny side of the bara. The cattle were wending their way adown the slope to where theepring bubbled up itserystal fluid, led by the faithful ox, the patriarch of the herd, and the milkmaid, with her span clean pails, sang & motry air as she wended her way to the dairy with ber sweet and fragrant burden. The old. rooster was training wives and their grown up broods, busy leading them hitherand thither in search of gravel or inseet—stratting proudly about, as grand as an old soldier, pla and spurred, either for battle or the more courtly dutiesof gallantry, while this and that old ben, the speckled pullet and all. trotted hither or thither at his call, gabbling or chant- ing, as happy and as talkative as the whole troape of lad nthe harem of the Grand Turk; while ever and anon the little villages of out- houses and barns wero made to ccho with his shrill and clarion voice. Towser, the old house dog, that had for ten years been tho faithful guardian of bis master’s interests, lay upon the front door step, in a state of quict dignity, eon- scious all the while of his responsibility, and the immense charge that lay upon his mind. Even pussy was not out of sight, but had crouched Porssit upon a huge wood pile, with her tail cviled comfortably around her fect, and her eyes, half closed and placid, expressing an unuzual smount of satisfaction. Prom the cottage chim- ney curled up the smoke blue and gr.cefully, after that fashion that betokens a goodly day, gad the doves had come out from their cot aad were walking back and forth upon the ro the barn, cooing and nodding their littie heads and behaving as merrily as possible. It was a most pleasant scone, and all #found bespoke the prosperous farm-house and the thrifty husband- msn. Yonder, by the turn of the road, with Stately poplar and pe willow in front, stood the little church, and further on, amid autumn fields, was seen the quiet parsonage. To the west the road wound up the valley, skirt- ed on one side by a hill covered with a forest wth of wood, and upon the other by a dark- tom and cra eminence, matted with firs andcedar. Up thither wus the way to the tavern where all the politics of the day were discussed, and many an incident related of perilous ad- venture or hard fought battle—for in those days, when men wrre men, and virtue not so easily tempted, every country place had its tavern where even the ly were not ashamed to assemble occasionally, and take a social lass, even with that holy man, the minister. hose were goodly days, when virtue necded not so much watching as at present, and people were kept too busy with their own affsirs to spare time to look after the affairs of others. Ay, indeed! it was truly a wonderful anda happy scene, and every object about, animate or inanimate, seemed thrilled with universal delight—and what an occasion, too! It was the First Thanksgiving. Years of peril, of toil and of war had the country suffered, ground down by foreign op- pression, and overrun by a menial soldiery; years of stout battling for the dignity of human nature and human right—for that inalienable inberitance of man—a representative govern- ment and freedom from oppressive taxation ! Nobly had the foe been met—foot by foot and inch by inch, had battle aftér battle been fought, and repulse after repulse suffered. Hungry, il!- clad, and often with bare and bleeding feet, had strong hearted bands of men marched forth from their homes to fight the battles of freedom, and offer their blood aa the sacrifice! Eight long ears of toilsome, uncertain and unequal war- fare had the country gone through, and thou- sands upon thousands of brave hearts had beaten r last throb at the very feet of the foo, and still an unconquered and unyielding band stood resolute before the enemy, seeking no terms but thoseof victory—expectizg no mercy but death! And thus beat the whole pulse of the country, a3 in one heart; with a frm reliance oa Heaven, and devotion to their great and pure leader. Wasbing‘or, there could be no other result than oue of triumph; no other thought but Liberty ! They came—those tidingsof peace. On angels inions went forth the glorious news, and as it fell upon the ears of matron and maid—of aged sire and gallant son, how joyfuily leaped their hearts, and amid tears and smiles how many a knee was bent, and many a lip was moved in prayer and thanksziving to the Divine Source Of all, and the sword was sheathed, the bayonet returned to its seabbard, and the war worn sol- dier once more turned his step toward home, and the army was disbanded. But many a hearth bad been made des slate, and few households but at the festive board some dear familiar hey never more should meet on earth. Well; God rest and bless them! They perished ina noble cause—the defence of their native land, made doubly sacred by the bloog so shed! Peace now shed its radiant beams upon all sround, and a day was appointed of Thanksgiy- ing, Praise and Prayer. With what devotion it was kept by buoyant youth and tottering sire, with merry-muking and religiops rites. Tur- keys were put up to be shot at by the young taen of the village; games of ball were played; wrestling matches were mate up; jumping and foot-raciug were practiced, and’ many other mauly feats performed, winning the praises of fair maiden and veteran soldier. Inthe house —such aclatier! What heaps of poultry and roast pig. luge Indian puddings doatingamid ® sea of jelly. Plate upon plate of mince pies, juicy and spioy, with crust so short that it almost melted in your mouth. Apple pies—how it made one’s mouth water even to look at them; and then the pumpkin pies and custards. Cake of all variety in shape aud make; and cheese— such cheese! and butter, golden and full of lus- cious fragrance, made by the good wife herself, or perhaps her no less cesomplished daughter. Who woul not like the butter beat up bysuch retty dimpled hands, and so sweet, too; or the Booadl kneaded by the work of such fair arm: Ab! whata happy household’ But we forget the goose.
