The Hall was crowded, and the members of the association found some difficulty in obtaining seats “O'Toole tock the stand; a: wing his for the a use which greeted him, proceeded bas? seldom been oar lot to listen to amore beautiful or more eloquent appeal than that ad- dressed to the crowded meng PY the leeturer. Any hurried synopsis would it wrong, and, ia justice, we refrain from an attempt. ‘The lecture was scarcety closed, when Mr. J. K ine came forward, and, ptesenting the lecturer with « purse of one bundred and fifty dollars for the purchase of a horse, alluded in some ap; priate remarks to the intluence which the rever- end gentleman had exercised for good in his ca- pacity of President of the Society. Dr. O'Toole received the preseat as follows: GentLewen: Returning the other day from a sick call, and driving pretty briskly the very horse which your purse mekes my own this even- Ing, 1 was bailed bya man running, out of breath, “1 am glad you've got bim, sir; IT was down fo: a doilar.’’ hat is this for, said I. as he handed moe a dollar? “1 am sorry it was’nt in time.” ‘was his reply. Hut it prt agreeable, indeed. js it for tue ‘ssake? Well, there is no use in what ix catled “ Buncombe,” where money is con- eeraed. Few would be credited if they claimed an utter Indifference ubout it. Money is a good thing—very useful on this planet of ours—not at all to be despised The only difficulty | know avont it enbances }ts value when we get it—that ie, it bs bard to get and had to keep. But, gen- tlemen, apart from this and before this, your resent this evening is very agreeable, because it 5 a substantial token of regard, and an unmis- takable proof of your hearty co-operation in the Cause and in the interest of temperance. | thank you, geatiemen, cor , and f must beg my ouny friend, your spokesman, to accept a specis} exgrosiell ef cay Ucsiks Sor the Bind baa tec ing terms in whfch he bas made this presentation. Be bas given us an accurate picture of the bene- Gis our society is capable of ee upon the Metropolis. And I would beg leave to remind bim and the xociety that my efforts gre but at- tempts to fulfil what I regard as the imperative demand of duty; and if they be anytbing more, | aim proud of the consciousness (hat | deem myself fully repaid by every happiness that!s brought to the hearths and to the hearts of the members, or by the thought that I am allowed to share the credit of any movement that tends to the peace and order of ourcity. And if at any tine | would me myself on being magnanimous ip such ef- forts, L could not relinquish my right to claim that they were entirely above the suspicion of self-interest. I must believe, then, gentlemen, that when you and your fellow. members wisbed to gratify your own generosity, it came easy to young friend toestablish a title for me, where you all wished to recognise one. And so do | explain to myself the kind, flattering teims ia which be bas spoken of my efforts. For the rest mistaken though he be as to my claims. | would not have bim, or any one of you, gentlemen, or @ny one inthe society, or any one out of the so- clety, mistaken as to my gratitude I accept your weighty purse, gentlemen, grate- faily, as a timely and useful present that will belp to furnish me with increased fucilities to setve yourselves. 1 accept it with, i trust, an honest pride, as identifying me in the fullest sympathy with the hardy sons of toil. I accept it, and let it be a new bond between me and the society; let it be a mutual encouragement to per- severance. Yes, gentlemen, ! accept it, above all, as an encouragement to persevere, as @ plain proof of r earnestness in the canse of temper- ance, and a demonstration to your fellow-citizens that your society is a reality in their midst. Aga entlemen, I thank you reg oo 4 and wh and gratitude I humbly beg fo hold myself devoted anew generously to your service tn this or any other good cause at all. At the conclusion of the exercises the audience quietly retired, much pleased with the proceed- ings of the evening. Tus Kipxarrinc Case —It will be remem- bered that some weeksago a man named Charles Saffell was arrested for kidnapping a #leve be- longing to Mr. Jenkins, who lives over the East- ©@ Branch. At thet investigation it was in evi- dence that Saffell took the boy to Alexandria to sellbim. He represented the bey Bs the prop- erty of Fi —~ and exhibited a biJi of sale — to besigned byhim ‘There betn, sone ia ierusalicy im the bill of sale, anew a was drawn up,and Saffell took it and went out with it to get it signed by Sands, and returned. ia about balf an bour with the biil signed by ‘Thomas Sands. S.ifell was held to bail for court; and since that time he has been endeavoring to Snd the man who represented bimself as ‘Phos. Sands. Yesterday, he recogn'sed Howard Brooks, aresident bere—a tailor on ‘Tutia street—as the person for whom he bad been seeking. A war- Fant was issued on the oath of S sffell; and Brooks was arrested by Officer King, and taken before Justice Donn ou the charge of being concerned in tbe stealing of said stave Saffelt testified yesterday that about a month or six weeks ago he met with Brooks. at 2 place near Stone's farm, north of the city. Brook« rep- resented bimself as Thomas Sands, and tol i Saf- fell that he knew wher. « negro could be bought cheap; and if he would take him to Alexandria and sell bim be would allow him allover @300 he ee for him. Sands also told him that be had a didicnity with the purchaser in pint Eg which was the reason = would not tke him down himself. Saffell met Sands several tines at (ue same —— when, at last, they fixed atime fo end this business of selling the bov. A ear- siage was hired from Mr. Jas. Shreves, and J with a white es named Davis, went together to the other side of the Eastern Branch bridge aad stopped. Sands went to, or near to, a bouse, where Mr. Jenkins lives. After a short time Sands returned with wkat Purported to be a bill of sale in bis hand, and remarked that he did not ‘want the pes taken up on the farm, but he would be on the bridge ia a sbo:t time. They drove to the bridge: and when the boy got to the bridge they took him in the carriage, and they all went together to Alexandria. At theedge of the town Sands got out, and the others went into the town and sold the boy. There being some {nformalit ia the bill of sale, a new one was drawn up, whic’ Saffcll says he took to Sands at the place where be left Lim, and got bis signature to it, which ‘was the last he saw of Sands until he saw him to-day at the court-house and had him arrested. Brooks waived further investtyation before the Magistrate, and gave bail in $1,000 for bis ap- pearance at Court The boy Davis, the cuse, mentioned in connection with is now in jail ARREST oF Battimoxe Rowvizs. — Last night, two well-known individuals, Wesley Woodward and Joba Suter, of Baltimore, arrived in this city. They soon began to display their | ss poms for riot and lawlessness. by going ote restaurants and exbibiting deadly weapons with which they were armed, boasting of their ability to walk through Washington as they —— despite the police; and threatened awful bings if interfered with by the officers. I manner greatly alarmed some of the nervous tlemen who met them in their course; and“t information was immediately yiven tothe Police. Lieut. Cp to this time it has been objected that the amount of carbonic acid absorbed from the atmosphere, and turned loose, we suppose, in a condition to make breathing it dangerous to health, has been a serious drawback to the common use of yas stoves. With this stove, however, it appears to be passed through water before being disengayed from the stove, which, purifying it, renders it innoxious. At any rate, we are very sure tbat no one ever saw so much availuble beat for warming a room got ou’ of a fire that did net cost five times as much, perbaps, as is required to make this stove of great surface too hot for one to toueb it with the band ina large store on Penusyivania avenue, with the keen wind blowing halfa burricane Imy at the wide open doors. ® should like much to hear the opinion of men of science mpon the arrangements for increasing and radiating heat through and from it, which ae the results really rendering it an extraordinary affatr. Is tux Cincuir Count, yesterday, a prayer was made for the issuing of a writ of mandamus upon the Secretary of the Treasury to compel him to pay over a sum of between thirty-four and thirty- five thousand dollars alleged to be held back by the Secretary from the amount recovered and di- rected by Congress to bed eee under the Reeside claim against the United States. The ground taken for the witbholding by the Secretary is understood to be that the amount withheld is to be deducted from the i riation by reason that after a certain trial in the United States circuit court for the eastern district of Pennsylvania, in IS4L, certain drafts had been paid, or were in part paid, by acts of Congress, or otherwise, which inust stard against said appropriation. It is sai that Mrs Reeside, the executrix, de- nies the right of the secretary to make the deduc- tion out of the appropriation, on the ground that the tial in 1541 was held und-r a special act of Congress providing for a more effectual settle- ment of such accoun’ iso, that the veidict of the jury, and the jud: tof the court at that time, settled the whole matter of indebtedness on eVherside. And, further, that. the said verdict Was sustained in Pennsylvania by the overruling of motions for new trial by the dismissal of a writ of error, and jn thie District by a decree of the Court of Claims, and, fineliy, by a positive and direct law of Congress; and that account thus seitled cannot, after a lapse of so many years, be reopened for the purposes of charge or ischarge of any description. The prayer was su ported before the court by argument from James ooper, Esq., ex-Senator from Pennsylvania, J.B Stew- art, and J. M. Carlisle, Esqrs. The court holds the matter under advisement An interesting decision was made by the Court yesterday in the case of Doe, dem, V yashington etal, heirs of William Campbell, late of Fred- erick City, Md., agt the present Possessors of uare 465 on the Island, numbering between ah nd sixty persons.
