WALLACH, Papers served in packages by carriersat 94a yOats or #7 cents per month. To mail subscibers the sab- scription price is $3 508 year, in advance ; $2 for sx months; $! for three months; and for less than three months at the rate of 12 centea week. Singic copies, one cent: in wrappers, two cents. ADVERTisEMENTS (of eight lines to the square) inserted three times for $1; every other day or semi-week!y, 26 per cent. advance ; once a week, 50 per cent. advance, Miss Laura H. Gildersiceve, an estimable young lady, is,or was, the grata of Primery School No. 37, in Yorkville, having been ap- pointed to that position through the influence of Mr. Schoo! Trustee Hibbard; but there arose a quarrel in a Lanett var - ous thi ineladi: i int. ments. r. Uibbard was charged with now- Nothingism, Republicanism, and other heresics and tergiversations; and, as he states, a clique of his opponents, comprising a jority of a quoram of school cers, resol that the Hrtosigal of his appo:mtment must be removed. Accordingly, they met er, as he aingy. without notifying him or bis fi ) passed a resolution declaring Miss Gildersleeve’s place vacant, and ied to appoint as her sue- cessor Miss Innes: handsome young lady then holdings position as teacher in auother school. Miss Inness, being notified of the ap- pointment, went to take possession, but the in- cumbent bad, in the meantime, been advised that her removal was iNegal, and refused ‘o vacate. Miss I., it is said, then went back to her own school, where she remained a whole month and drew her pay, being also returned for the same period as principal of school No. 37. About the first of this month she again attempted to get possession of her office as prin- cipal; and following the example of the rival Street Coumissioners, the two rosy-cheeked young ladies seated themselves in the school- room, and both assumed the direction of affairs. No soover would ove give an order than it -would be countermanded by another; and the poor, bewildered little children found them- selves in a predicament very much like that of the city police when the Metropolitan Commis- sioners first asserted their authority. If they obeyed Mias Inness, it was at the risk of hav- ing their noses tweaked by Miss Gildersleeve: and if they toed up to the Gildersleeve word of command, it was at the peril of boxed ears from Miss Inness. Miss Gildersleeve had, it is claimed by her partizans, the advantage of actual possession of the books and other school belongings, and the sympathy of a maj. rity of the little ones and their parents, and Miss In- ness was making but slow progress in recover- ing what she believed to be her legal rights. To burry up things, Mr. Trustee John Vance, of the Inness q: went before Justice Bren- nan, at Essex Yar et Police Court, on the 6th i t. and entered a complaint in manner following: “ That on the Sth of November, 1855, Laura H. Gildersieeve was making a noise and dis- turbing the peace, and thrusting herself inside of the school-house, No. 37, and taking eharge ofthe same, she having been removed there- from by the Board of School Officersof the 12th ward, of which deponent is a member; she re- fuses to leave said school.” The Inness party claim that the meeting at whieh Miss Gildersleeve was removed was a regular stated meeting; that all its proceed- ings were legal; that there was no Political feeling in the matter, but the only cause of ce- moval was @ charge of inefficiency on the part of Miss Gildersleeye, and that they were very much surprised to learn that she had got up an indignation meeting in Yorkville, and a ¢ excitement sbout her removal, which was attributed to political machinations. Both the ladies, it is asserted, are native born and pro- testants. ‘The examination of the matter wa3 set down for this morning, and proceeded before J: udge Steers, Judge Brennan being absent. The you: ladies, and several of their female iiends, were in court, their pretty faces disfig- ured by frowning brows -- glances. ‘The counsel for Miss Gi fees objected to the complaint, that it alleged no disorderly conduct within the meaning of the statute, but that question was for the present resarved. Joba Vance sworn, testified that he is school trustee, and chairman of the board of officers; that on the 5th day of November, he siw Miss Gildersleeve in the ward schoot; "No. 37, order- ing the children around; Misa Inness was also there, and complained to him that Miss G. was “ shere as usual;”’ told her to try and avoid difficulties until action could be taken to re- lieve her of the presence of her rival; Miss G. had beens er, and principal of the school, but was not then Q. Had she been removed, and by whom? {Question objected to by counsel, and objection overruled. | A. She has been removed by the trustees of the 12th ward, who appointed Miss Inness in her place. While spe with Miss Inness in the school, witness saw Miss Gildersleeve in the — room, ens one of the side doors, apparently giving directions to the children going out An in, at recess; did not notice her movements after that, as he remained but a short time longer. He had, previous to that day, requested Miss Gilderaleeve to leave the school; witness desired tostate that this was one of x series of acts on her part, but the jus- tice ruled that his testimony must be confined to what occurred on the 5th of November. Witness was asked by couasel for prosecution if the meeting at which Miss Gildersleeve wag removed was a —— meeting of the trustees, bat counsel for fence objested, and a dis- cussion ensued, each side claiming that their elient was in actual possession of the office, an 1 the proper remedy of the Sy seg re was by & writ of guo warranto from the Supreme Court. The point had not been decided when oar reperter left.—N. ¥. Post. a Ratner a Toven Story.—The following, whieh we find in an English paper, wil! do to go along with the Evening Post's account <f the $2.000 note dodge at Stewart's: A few days age a lady of fashionable appear- ance alighted from a carriage, and entered a large drapery establishment not one handrd miles from the oo and Castle, when she selected « parcel of goods to the value of nearly 2100. When her purchases: were completea, she stated that she had forgotten to bring her eheok-bock, and desired that one of the young men would accompany her home with the : ‘when she would hand him a check for the amount. Not liking to entrust the business ta any of the pro prietor step iage with the lady, and was rapidly driven to Peckham, where, at a large aud respectable locking house, they alighted, and the goods were taken in. Foe lady then politely ushered the anxious and wary linen draper into the drawing room, him to wait for a brief moment, until Sis fetches the eheck-book. The brief moment passed, and many more also, but the lady did not make her appearance. Half an hour,three- warters, yes, an hour had gone by, and still ae fashionable debtor did not come. Tbe horrible truth was out.
