Correspondence of The Star. Bartrvorg, Mp., Nov. 11, 1858. Editor of The Star: Believing that a chap- ter concerning the jail of this city and its in- mates, would be of interest to the multitu- dinous readers of the Star, I extended my peregrinations in that direction. The jail, you know, is situated, with the penitentiary, om @ lot of ground bounded on the west by Jones’ Falls, on the north by Neighbor street, on the east by Constitution street, and on the south by Madison street. A high brick wall encloses both the prisons, and a similar wall divides the two lots. The location is far from being desirable, and I have no doubt that Baltimore rowdies, hardened as they seem to be, seldom take kindly to a lengthy stay with- im these walls. But it is not of the I pre- pose to write, inasmuch as your citizens have ample opportunities to contemplate nobler buildings, and I am not gifted with the talent of describing architectural curiosities. On arriving at the entrance of the jail, and making myself known to the gentlemanly Warden, Capt. Thos. C. James, I was speedily admitted, and treated with the utmost cordiai- ity. I was conducted through several apart- ments of the building, and had quite 2 number of celebrities pointed out to me, and was enter- tained with short sketches of their respective histories. Among the prisoners I met with many whose countenances rather prepossessed me in their favor, and notwithstanding that the charges against them in most instances were sufficient to excite detestation and ab- horreuee. I could not get rid of the conviction which forced itself — my mind soon after I entered the place, t these young men are the victims, rather than the originators, of a deplorable state of society. That must have been a powerful motive of evil which led them to forsake the society of kind parents and af- feetionate brothers and sisters — blessings which many of them enjoyed—and betake themselves to such pursuits as have resulted in their reach- ing this stopping-place on their road to infamy and destruction. Yet such a motive existed, or they would not be here now. The mind is naturally led to inquire. in what did these strong inducements to crime consist? And readily the answer comes, in p litical club associations. By connecting themselves with these clubs, no matter to what arty they ure attached, young men surround Abecnstpereith the most corrupting of all influences, and be- come pliable tools in the hands of scheming politicians, who use them until their own pur- poses are consummated, and then leave them without a thought of what fate they may meet Truly, I believe there are those in this jail, who, but for the influences brought to bear against them by their associations with politi- eal clubs, would now occupy honorable positions in, and be happy me.bers of, society. There, on my right, is one young man, whose name I will withhold. I kaow him to be a competent vut-door clerk. His father isa poor, honest man, and his mother is a motherly old lady, beloved by all who know her. His brothers and sisters are with us, and of them no harm is uttered. Whyis he here? The path he has trodden is plain, and the reason of bis reaching this destination is palpable. He joined a polit ieal club, be listened to the counsel of reckless and abandoned men in that club, and to the exciting speeches of politicians who addressed that club. On election day, he went with his companions to “ protect’’ the polls, and with them violated that law which should of all others in this country be deemed most sacred— the law protecting the citizen in the exercise of bis franchise. Victory was with the party for whom his club labored. The club was con- gratulated for the good work it had aided in consummating. For several days, rejoicing was all that the memters of the club had time to do, ard to rejoice well they had to drink. The rest is soon told. When the money was eH the festivities were suspended, but the bits of idleness and dissipation had now be- come fixed, and some members of the club cvuld not bresk tham up. Of this unfortunate number was George ——. and after a few days of suffering from unsatisfied thirst, he went with seme of his cowpanions and robbed Mr. ‘ He was arrested, but the wit- nesses did uot prosecute him. Since then, ke has been in this jul a number of times; ard what he is bere for now is wore than I can tell for I did not ask him. But the prisoner referred to above has not yet attained that grade in crime to make hi: au object of public interest. There are others bere whom it would no doubt be more consis ent with the desires of your readers to portray. These have progressed so far in crime as to have dyed their hands in hu:man gore. They may be bung. Have your readers sympathies’ If so, I would, befure going further, bid them remember the murdered meo and their striek- ened familie, and bestow their sympat! there. Don’t waste them on these ruffians wh deserve the fate they Lave rushed forward to, no matter how severe that fate may be. The must prominent among these murder- dyed prisoners is Meury Gambrill, recently couvicted of murder in the first degree, fr kill. ing policeman Benton. You probably remem- ber the circumstances. Benton had arrested ove of Gambrill’s associates for boing disorderly and attacking a house where a party was in Progress He was also a witness against a brother of Gambrill’s, indicted on a char, ’ arson. Ashe was leading his priconer a jung, assisted by suother officer, Gambrill ran up behiad him and shot him through the head. | Gambrill is probably twenty-two years old, ra above the medium height, of fair eom- piexion, and has a countenance indicating no extraordinary cruelty of disposition. Indeed, eould be throw off the appearance of dissipa- tion and habitual recklessness cf demeanor uired within four or fiy years uite comely. His parents wre pouple of good repute, aud, exetpting bis brotver, who is awaiting his trial now on a ebarge of arson, the family are all worthy peo- le. He is attended by a minister of the | Methodist denomination, and employs a great deal of bis time in seeking for that redemption | which is not withheld from the most guilty cf sil mankind. He reeeives the visits ot bis fam- ily aud friends without evincing any pleasure ia their svciety, so great is his dread ot the bit- | ter cyp bisown hard has poured off for himse:f | to drink ; and, indeed, the torture he is under- going makes hiw a painful sight to contemplate. | fn the same cell with Gam rill is William @ Pord. who alsu killed police officer Thomas H Berubam, and was found guilty of murder in the first degree. This crime was committed more than a year ago, and I have forgotten the incidents of it, further than to remember thuc it originated io a drunken quarrel, and that Ford evineed any va! vindictiveness. Ford iy probably thirty years of age, of large athletic tame, aud a physiognomy indicating in i gence an —< | papa He is a mazried man, I think, and bas one cbild, a little girl of some six years of age, which ig allowed to re- main with bim im his cell, and towards which be displays great affection. Ford is far more calw in the anticipation of Lis doom than Gam- | bill, but he is also receiving instruction from the same minister as to the nature of the Chris. | tian grace, which saveth the world, and how be oan @ partaker thereof. Ford, to», is the victim of clubism.
