The City Council having by a joint resolution appointed Thursday, the 25th instant, as a day of thanksgiving and prayer, I have approved the act, and deem it my daty to give an official an- nouncement of the same by this my proclamation. The observance of s day of thanksgiving at this season of the year is sanctioned by tim nored custom, and is uliarly becoming a Christian community. The blessings which are contin- ually vouchsafed to us demand that we should occasionally turn aside from our daily avocations, and, as it were, sanctify a secular day by united and heartfelt manifestations of gratitude, by prayerful reflection, and by contrite ication. la order to give due effect and solemnity tothe occasion, every good citizen is Invoked to con- tribute Something of example and precept to- ward the falfilment cf the duties which properly belong to the day; and to this end I recommend that the ordinary pursuits of business be sus- pended, and that all denominations assemble tn their respective places of worship to render thanks to Almighty God es boundless me cies, and to offer up supplltations for a contin ance of our civic and our national prespere. Given under my band, at the city of ashing- ton, this 13th day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty- eight. Jamas G. Berxrt, Mayor. Tae Committesat Worx.—Several years ago the regular occurrence of fires, alarms, &c., kept our city property owners in constant zlarm for the safety of their houses. It was supposed that the destruction was not done by one or two incendia- ries. but by a regularly organized gang ; and as regularly as night came the alarm of fire was beard, and the exclamation of Property ownets, «‘the committee’s at work again!’ The incen- diary operations in the western part of the city, within a few weeks, indicate just such an organ- ization, and probably when the mystery of the destruction of property tuere is solved, the par- ties will be discovered and punished. About eleven o'clock Saturday night the large frame building, charitably devoted by the benev- olent members of St. John’s (Episcopal) church as a home for destitute widows and orphans, was fired, and in consequence of “— winds prevail- ing at the time, it was entirely consumed ; the forniture for the use of the occupants being saved it was « double building, and the villian or vil- trans set fire to a part not so frequently visited by tbe inmates {t is time to be alarmed when we know that there are incendiaries abroad so hardened av to select the home of the poor, feeble, and aiiileted widow, and the helpless orphan, as a mark of their violence The building was the property of Mr. S. S Parker, and was insured in the Washinzion Jn- surance Company for $1,000. The cash was paid over to Mr. Parker this morning. River —Arrived at Harvey & Co.'s Wharf sebr.
