The school in whieh our spirits Are trained by beauty and love, Dieasures THE GREAT BALLOON RACE! A Collision in the Skies! (From the Sandusky Register.] Our city was visited yesterday morning by a est from the clouds. The t balloon race se Cincinnati, between Stei Mons. Godard, tised, creating great excitement, and which eame off on Monday afternoon, terminated, so far aa one of the parties—Prof. Steiner—was concerned, near this city, night before last. The Professor called upon us yesterday morn- ee gave a brief account of his wrial flight. 3 has already been published, the balloons rose at precisely half-past 4 o’ciock, Monday afternoon, from the City Lot, Cincinnati, and took an upward and northerly direction. For the first half hour the balloons kept so close together that their occupants could converse, and at one time they approached so near each other as to cause a slight collision, which, how- ever, was not attended with injury to either balloon. After being up about three-quarters of an hour, our adventurers parted company, Mons. Godard ascending very high, and Prof. Steiner continuing to push forward to the north at a mean elevation of 5,000 feet. God- ard shortly after began to descend slowly, and continued until he nearly reached the ground, ar appeared to be making preparations to At about 6 o'clock, Prof. Steiner lost sight of his companion, beng at a height of about 3,000 feet, and in the neighborhood of Bellefontaine. He then made preparations for spending the night in the clouds. ie ascended to an altitude of about 6,000 feet; becoming very chilly and drowsy, he let down a drag —_ of 3,000 feet in length, wrapped about bis wrist, so that in case th rope dragged upon the ground the would awaken him—wrapped about shawl, and gave himself up to sleep. mained unconscious until he reached about seven miles south of this city, balloon had sunk so near lodge in the top of a tall tree, causing quite a concussion, upsetting the basket, and spilling the —— laid in for the trip, and two bundred pounds of bailast. The wronaut awoke just im time to save himself from the conse- quences of a broken neck. _ He righted up the balloon. which. being now lighted by the loss of so much ballast, shot up- ward with a fearful velocity, until it reached an elevation of about 12,000 feet. At this juno- ture, having lost nearly halt his ballast, and all bis provisions, and knowing that in the course in which he sailing he would have to pass a stretch of water nealy one hundred and fifty miles in breath before reaching the Can- ada shore, Prof. Steiner concluded to land on this side of the Lake, and aceordingly made a safe descent, landing on the farm of Mr. C Townsend. one mile South east of thisctt: and half a mile from the Bay, at twenty minutes before eleven o’clock, having been ia the air just six hours and twenty-fiveminutes. There remained in the balloon two hundred and fifty pounds of ballast, and sundry bottles of wine and bepedy vith @ can of water with which to & spot where the the ground as to mix. P, mt the remainder of the night in a corn ‘aa where he aaa found ee morning by Mr. Townsend, who kindly assisted _— the ss and with whom the We t Prof. Steiner could not have staid with us longer, and given a more detailed ac- count of his wrial voyage. As it was, he could barely eall and report himseif, and give, in hurried sentences, the Particulars we have reported. He started for Cincinnati,— erie, fee ern em the 10:45 A . in e Sandus in- eingat ener | y, Dayton and Cin. - 8.—Since the above was written, we un- derstand by a telegram received at t city that Mons. Godard landed at nearly tke same, hour with Prof. Steiner in the neighborhood of Monroeville, sixteen miles South of this place, and the success of either of the aeronauts was to be determined by the distance made, it will be seen that Young America is triumphant. ppg Prof. Steiner, the Young American ) achol, N F Keeling, Va; J F Lewis, Mo. 3 WP, ¥; A Darrell.
