Nixt= Distaict Potice. —On Monday4nad yesterday, @ case was tried before Justice Thos J Williams, at the Ninth District Police Office, whereima man named Charles Saffel, or Saffie, was charged wi'b stealing and conveying away aaegrosiave boy, named Nelson Shorter, be- longing toa Mrs. Evans, of Maryland, and em- ployed by R.J. Jenkins, Esq., who resides ina little hamlet, called Union Town, a short dis- tance from the Anacostia bridge, in the District of Columbia The principal evidence, which Was given in the case, was the voluntary testi- mony of the prisoner himself, who stated to the officer, on being arrested, that a man named Jn Sands bad employed bim to sell the negro, that he bad met Sands {n conference about the pro- sale several times on the road leading to ieree’s mill, and that Sands offered him all above three hundred dollars which he should get forthe ; that the reason he (Sands) did not wish to appear in the sffair was that he had bad a difficulty with Mr. Bruin, of Alexandria to whom it was pro) to sell the TO, @ did not wish to deal with him personally. He further stated that Sands gave him two dollars on the day of the alleged stealing, and sent him to Mr. Sbreeve, who keeps a stable on Seven street, to hire a horse and carriage, th: having bired the team bimseif, Sands nd ano- ther man, named John Davis, proceeded to the Navy rd, and thence across the Anacostia beidge and past the house of Mr. Jenkins where the negro boy was seen playing in front, or near the house, with some white boys. ‘That Sands got out of the carriage and conversed with the boy, and then came back to the car- riage saying, ‘That's all right, they are going to send him over the bridge, short! » for groceries, and then we'll take Lim.’’ bat he (Saffel) made reply, ‘Why don’t you bring him along now ?* and that Sands answered that he did not desire to take bim where the other slaves could see him, as they would think he was going to sell them all. That they then drove back on the bridge and waited, and when the boy came along they took him and placed him in the carriage, and drove off. That Sands rode part of the way, and then got out of the carriage, and he and Da- vis weat on to Alexandria and endeavored to bargain the boy off to Messrs. Owens & Bruin. Officer Williamson testified that when be and officer Suit went to arrest Sattel he was standing on the pavement about two squares from his mother’s house, and seeing them coming, went hastily home, and passing through the house, ‘went out of the back gate, and up an alley, and was taken about two squares beyond his house. ‘That when arrested he voluntarily made the above statement. Mr Shreve testified that on the Morning in question, Safle came to his stable and bired a horse and bugyy, representing that he wanted it for two or three hours to go into the country, in the neighborhood of Pierce's mill, to bring a sick lady, and that he afterwards saw hix horse and buggy on the Navy Yard, and wondered what ft was doing there. He also s‘ated that the team ‘was not returned until after he had gone to bid that night It was also stated, by way of hearsay, that Mr. Bruin (who was not present at the trial) bad said that Saifel came there and represented bim- self as John Sands, and proposed to sell him the bey, and showed a bill of sale wherein he was deeded to bim (Sands or Saff-l) by Mr Jenkins, but that a mistake had been made Le the wording of the tustrument, which rendered it defective That be (Bruin) made out a proper deed of sale and told Saff-l to go and have it executed by Jea- Kins; that Saffel went away, and in twenty min- utes returned with Jenkins’s name regularly signed to the paper, and was about to affix bis own name when a Dr. Dale, of Washington, en- tered Bruin’s office, and recognizing Suffel, ad- dressed him by name. Bruin looked up sur- ised, and said, ‘1 thought your name was ads !*’ ‘That Satfel made some confused reply, and be (Bruin) refused to buy or give up the ne- to who was already in his possession. Mr. Jenkins testitied that he missed the negro, and hearing one described as being for sale at the Alexandrix jail, went there and identified him as bis missing property, and brought him back. The presiding magistrate, bearing the above statements and evidence, consider that there was sufficient against the prisoner to warrant his being held for a more rigid examination, and ac- cordingly heid bim to bail in the sum of $2,000 for bis appearance, to answer the charge of steal- ing, before the Criminal Court Upon failure to give the required bail, the prisoner was remanded to jail. Tue Prsiic Scnoors —The Mayor and Messrs_ Willett, Whyte and AtLee, of the Board of Trus tees, yesterday paid a visit to the public schools of the Fourth district. The principal object of tue visit was to inguire Into and examine the condition of the buildings in which these schools are kept, with a view to their improvement Mayor Berret expressed great regret luat the ac- commodations provided for tue pupiis were so limited, and that so many apparent inconve- niences and obstacles were thrown around them in their persuit after a fitting education. These drawbacks to progress are mueu more apparent at this season of the year than during the sum- mer, when dilapidated school rooms may be en- dared without absolute danger to the health of the teachers and pnpils ; but in the winter, when children are compelled to take refuge in these places from the cold blasts, and the rain and snow, there should be some project put in opera- tion to afford them due protection. The Mayor addressed the pupils briefly at each plac id ased many encouraging remarks to them, rt- ing them to persevere in their effuits to become good and useful citizens, notwithstanding the difficulties whicb surrounded tbem, and pledg- tug bis best efforts to lessen them. The occasion Was a most interesting one, to both the visitors and the visited. The history of this case is as follows: A widow lady by the name of Myers, having four children, and owning certain real estate in the city of Washington, on her marriage with Mr. Upperman united with bim in a deed to Mr Rothwell, securing ber property to uerself and ber heirs forever u certain terms She had one child by Mr. Upperman, and subsequently died; and U pperman claims to be tenant by cour- tesy In her lauds. The question for the Court Was, whether by the terms of that deed the trust had terminated; and the Court decided that the trast was terminated by the death of Mrs. Upper- man, and the property desceaded to her beirs it is expected that an appeal wili be taken to the Supreme Court. — Puss —The tokens of winter are at hand. Jack Frost makes burried incursions into the camp of Autumn, steals the Lioom from flowers, and leaves the print of bis marauding feet upon the trees, Paliiag leaves prociaim that the Indian summe: —tbat mirage of July seen in October—will soon be over, and bright, bracing weather, with snow and ice, with skates and weighs, succeed the “melancholy days’? that are now upon us.
