Gerrine Reapy.—The process of fixing up for the coming legislative term of Congress 1s going forward already at the Capitol. Workmen are engaged in brashing up the House of Repre- sentatives and the surrounding rooms and pas- sages, and within the Hall the paieters are en- gaged wy the work of ornamentation. The nels between the doors of entrance to the Hall | been mma Lema ta eer! demask, and t in the galiery are ng 2 cleaning, and being freshly frescoed.- The seats and desks of the members are | all the neater for a fresh coat of varnish with which they bave been covered, and the dust which had accumulated in piles upon the floor, and every- thing else to which it could adtere {in the Hall, is being cleaned out; and the sweepers, painters, upholsterers, and others, are reaping a harvest 5 dollars for their labors It is suggested that the new Senate will not be in a condition for the members to occupy it at any time during the coming session by reason of the dampness of the walls. Asthe old Senate Hall is as yet amply ieee enough to accommodate tha! body, certainly be better to occupy it the coming w ter than to place the lives of venerabie men in peril by removing them to the new Hall, where no ai at of precaution will be sufficient in its new condition to prevent the dampuess of its walls and the ween ye of cold air, which inthe ished state of the rooms surrounding the must penetrate there, from annoying the members. Piers District Poticr Orrice.—A number of cases have bern tried at this c@ice during the last fortwight. On the 6th instant a man named Kenney, who was charged with disorderly con- duet, cursing and swearing in the public streets, and whose conduct, ‘when brought before Justice ‘Thompson, was outrageous, profane and d+ flant, was committed to the workhouse for ninety days, the fine of $3 M4 imposed by the magistrate being unpaid. Oitcer King escorted Kenney in his ride to the workhouse On the 9b inrtant a tavern keeper wan fined ‘S20 SS cost for permitting cards, &c., to be played in bis house for wnat & Yesterday, a colored man, named Allen Davis, was fined $2) and 91 cents costs for carrying about bis person a erous weapon, viz: a loaded pistol which was taken from bim by officer King and afterw: left with the Chief of Police Yesterday, two colored lads (the one a slave) were brought to this office by J. F. King, and fined $3 and 9 cents cost In one case and $2 and 4 cents in the other, for disorderly conduct, fixht- ing and throwing stones on D street, near the Na- tional Intelligencer office. We learn from an eye-witness that oa Sanday last, when these of- fences were commitied, in open daylight, that several other disorders were committed, to the great annoyance of the peaceable citizens in that vicinity, and the desecrat on of the Sabbath. ‘The colored offenders above referred to, after being duly admonished by the acting mayistrate, were released from cutely on payment of the fine and costs by their respective employers. The unlaw- fal and dangerous practice of lads throwing stones in ihe public streets, near the Wasbington Seminary. and on Ninth and Tenth streets, has been lately much complained of, and it ix the de- termination of the pomp May istrate of the dis- trict, with the aid of his officers, to suppress it, if practicable. Mititrary —It is cheering to note the renewed spirit which is being manifested by the mem- bers of the various military companies in our city since the late advent on our streets of the New York Seventh Regiment of Volunteers. Almost every night a meeting of the officers of Che District Regiment, or of the members of some one of the compagies belonging to it, is held at the Armory on the Island. The etfect of these meetings Las been to infuse a new ardor into the ininds of many members of the District military who bad become totally indifferent as to whether the Federal Metropolis weat shead of or behind other cities in this matter; and, notwithstanding the recusant action of many of the officers and men,a marked improvement may be observed in the alarity with which the drill meetings are etter |, and the pride evinced by the officers in bringing the ranks up to something like discl- pline. Suould this kind of feeling among them coutinue to prevail, we shall expect to see ou the next annual parade day such a tarn out of the District militia and such a itary improve- ment in the discipline of the rank and tile, that our citizeus geverally will look upon with pleasure, and assist in maintaining. Stevsen Association —An association bas been recently formed in this city, under the above name, the object of which is to farther the educational interests of the German population bere. The most of our leading German fellow- citizens are engaged in the movement, and bave formed « joiut stock company with one hundred and eiybty shares of ninety dollars each, to be cS im at the rate of $2 SU per month by the holders, for the purpove of building g large Con- cert Hall, which, when finished, {sto be let for par of balis, exhibitions, &c., and the pro- pee pap applied to purpases of education! ‘This ts a movement in the right direction, and we bid it God speed. We quderstand that, at the last meeting of the Axsocidtion, winety of the our hwadred and eighty shares were sold, and tue prospect is that by the wext meeting they will be ata premiom. Tux Taxataee —If the theatre be not crowded to-night, to repletion, our piay-goers will have added bnt little to thetr reputation for gallantry, and to their appreciation of sprightly tajent. The occasion will be for the farewell benefit of Mixs Maggie Mitebell, who bas made a host of ad- mirers during her brief stay in our midst i they but attend the theatre to-night, the f charming young beneficiary will be eompliment- ed in @ brilliant and substantial manner. Toe entertainment is a very attractive one, embracing the sterling comedy of “ Masks and Paces,” by two of the best dramatic authors of the day—Tom Taylor and Charles Reade—and a very excelient drama by the late Major Noah, termed “ The Wandering Boys *' Miss Mitchell concludes her engazement to-morrow night. Daownzp —This morning, asa long boat was passing into the city canal, west of Fourteenth street, the tide being low, the boat struck the body of a man sticking in the mud, and brought it to the surface. The helmsman made the body fast, and brought it to the shore. The appearame of the body indicates that it bas been in the water @ day or two, and it is now ditticult to identify the person, or whether he was a resident of Washington. He was a colored man, and at first supposed to be a well-known colored ividual named Wise; but Officer Fauning went to the residence of Wise and found him at home. So the deceased remains uaknown. Bao Niout rom a Sxrevape —Last night, about I! o'clock, as the rain was beginning to deseeud heavily, passing along a street near the Avenue and Eleventh, wesaw a young gentleman well known to most of our young friends, stand- ing in the middle of the pavement, but sheltered from the rain by an ample umbrelia, serenading, as be supposed, his ylove. But be had un- doubtediy made a mistake, for the nouse certain- ly contained no human being. The voral sere- nade would bave been listened to with picasure o '¥ moonlight evening, but the serenader lost an audience in e uence of the weather. Men are induced by love or whiskey to do many fool- ish things. Tue Comets.—The present distance from the earth of the comet is forty-five millions of miles, and the length of the tail extends fifteen mil- lions. Some observers assert that the comet bas not, as is generally supposed, an elliptical orbit, bat that a parabolic one will better Fepresent its motion here is another of these bodies visible im the celestial field. Several pieces of the above property we believe could have been purchased at a very reasonable = when we consider its location and intrin- sie value. For instance, that offered by Messrs Rogue & Donnelly could have been purchased for $3,000, and that occupied by Mr. Stribling at a trifle over $5,000. In either case we believe such an investment would have been both safe and remunerative, and we believe the day is not far distant when eitber of them will command at least one hundred per cent. more. We believe the same might be said of other pieces. The weather continues extremely gloomy, and attended with considerable rain, which bas pret- ty near put a stop to outdoor business for the present.
