The Delta has the following sickening picture : St. Vincent Paul Cemet. has been the burial | ses of « large number of the victims of yellow fever thigscason, from the fact that the disease has been prevailing in a greater degree in the third district than any other portion of the city. The cemetery is divided into two divisions; the lower is almost destitute of vaults or tombs, and tnose Interred are placed, in dry weather, about 2 foot under ground, the dirt thrown on top not more than covering the coffin. Since the recent heavy rains the whole place is flooded, more or less, and looks more like a swamp than a ceme- tery. The spade hardly breaks through the sed fore the water shows itself, and then the ne- @toes gouge out as inuch as they can for the wa- ter. Several graves were open yesterday, as we passed through, locking like oblong mud pud- dies. A few moments afterward the remains of some poor individual were brought in, and left to the negroes to inter. Placing the rough coffin on a hand car, they carried it a short distance, aud Placed it by the side of a hole, and made prepa- ration for placing it in its last resting place. ‘The coffin was let down into the water, but, of course, it would not sink, and immediately rose to the surface. It was thrust down rather roughly, sev- eral times, to endeavor to make it adboie to the soft mud, but it invariably rose again. At last it was shoved in, and the spade of one negro held it until the other threw in large quantities of hard mud, which served as a weight to keep the bead down. One of the negroes then, while the other kept his spade on the ‘first end, lowered the foot, and sank it in the same manner, kicking in some mud with his feet, while his spade kept the cof- fin down. The whoie of this section of the eem- etery is filled with new graves, and presents the appearance of a pa field. The stench ig some portions is hardly endurable, coming, as it does, from the shallow graves of water. ———— —$______ UU John Gibbs, a printer, died in Tallabas- see on the i7th instant, aged 50 years. 7 The Charieston papers contradict the re- port that the yellow fever exists to an alarming extent im that city.
