LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. CO Se Nunta District Porice —The Ninth district, aan’ ashort hour on Thursday afternoon, was pm as lively and opposite from its usual staid regularity as could have well been, by reason of certain local bickerings requiring the mild and soothing influence of the authorities constabulary in their adjudication. Among other things, sev- ral persons of the gentler sex got up an unfortu- es misunderstanding, whicb grew more violent na\tpe bottle grew empty, until it ail ended in ‘atoal exchanges of feminine defiance, sundry Gackings with soapsuds, and a visit to the shop of Justice Cull. The names of the ies were, on the part of the prosecution, Mrs. Polly Foy and Priscilla Churn, and on the versus side Mrs. Mitebell. The defendant was of Celtic birth, while her persecutors were born ina free country. The parties all lived under one roof, and were washerwomen by profession, and the quarrel was shout a question of national courtesy and a bed allt. Justice Call decided the matter in favor of Qe “native and to the manor born” ladies, who went home so elated with their success over the Ceitic female, that their joy was given vent to by expressions in aspersement of the party, to comparisons between American and jrish character, and the mance of sundry impromptu and intricate hornpipes on the steps defendant was front of ber domicile. The late jikewise given to understand that she must not attempt to bold her head so high over those of her neighbors who were free-Lorn female citizens ofa — The subject of the quilt was also revived, with severe animadversions — the previous quarrel, to the great scandal of Mrs. M., who thereupon seized a bucket of suds, with which she performed acompulsatory ablution on the person of Priscilla Churn, to the prejudice of ber garments, and in direct violation of the roles of propriety as laid down by that now soapy and bedeinged mentor. She then put out for the office of Justice Cull, where she entered formal com- plaint against Priscilla and Polly, as being drunk and disorderly persons, not fit to go at large. [t was thus that in a short time afterward the three females confronted each other 7. in the pres- ence of his worspip. To describe the scene now, would require the genius-impelled pen of Dick- ens. The circumstances were all reversed. The proceeutors were now placed in the position of defendants, and the star of Mrs. M's rejoicing was bigh in the firmament. Priscilla, on whom the spiritual influence was rapidly augmenting, alternately gave long, incoherent accounts of the duckiog, and then, being requested to shut up, declared she had not spoken a word. Polly was duly charged with scandalous Terpsichorean feats, in seant clothing, and asserting her rights as an American woman in an unlawful manner; and Prisctila with being an aider and abettor in the transaction, by ste- -ing Polly on to the performance. Polly wept, and denied the charge, requesting the bystanders to take her to the Cor- poration burial ground and place her under the sod; and Priscilla extinguished the charge, so far as her aiding and abetting was concerned, by tri- umphant rebutting evidence as to the soapsuds, and exbibited her suds-bedraggied garments in confirmation, of unmistakable and unrefutable character Justice Cull, with characteristic humasity, list- ened tothe plaints and the mutual defiances with profound attention, and afterwards administered such adose of moral suaxion, interspersed with sundry hints about the horrors and terrors of the work-house and jail, that the trio of female belig- erants became affected into tears, and wept in concert, and begged for mercy in heart-rending tones which at last resulted in their all being or- dered to go about their business, with the assur- ance that should the quarrel be resumed, and they ever come legally to the ‘shop’? ayain, they would have to go over to Queen’s and pull weeds for desert. This matter settled, a slight commo- tion in an adjacent street was reported, and pres- ently a crowd of officers and citizens were ob- served vainly endeavoring to arrest a small sized man, who was laying about bim with a degree of skill which would bave won for any pr fessor of the *‘ ring** a bigh reputation as an‘ artist.”? The ng gentleman was genteelly dressed, and good ing, maugre an exceedingly ferocious expres- sion of the eye which had the effect to inspire sneb terror among his opposers that for sometime he bad things all his own way, and whipped the crowd ; but bis triumph was short lived, as it had been vigorously won, and he was at length captured ood marshalled into the magistrate’s Office, minus hat, shirt collar, and kerchief, and plus any numoer of rainbow tints in the region of the optics. The facts were sought for and found. The defendant had just been discharged from the marine corps, and wished to go up to the city per omnibus and take bis little b! cogs 4 with him. Omnibus driver refused to have blac dog as passenger; defendant became furious; driver stubborn ; defendant caught horses by bri- die; driver remonstrated ; defendant stubborn, and driver pugilistic; pollceman interposed. fight—exeitement; and, last of all, defendant captive before worshipful court. Defendant plead guilty to fight, but ignored policeman who was without bis uniform, and wore no “ star,”’ nor “number”? Respectable citizen testitied that defendant was insane, and not fit to go mt tere He was sent to jail as an insane person, and the office was then cleared for the next case. One of the attending officers at this office requests us to state that he has discovered who stole his valua- bie kaife from the desk, and desires the guilty party to return it instantiy, or he will be coerced inte @ visit to the criminal court room, City Hail, one of these fine days. Thus ends this lesson. Tre Witness’ Bano Excursion.—We have several times noticed the fact that the compli- mentary excursion to Withers’ Band was impa- Heatly waited for by a large number of thoxc who have danced to the music of that renowned c orps. The preparations which we see now and then among our lady friends remind us that the excur- siow Will take place on Monday next. ‘The most complete arrangements to preserve order and se- cure pleasure have beeu made; and we kaow of no trip to which the citizens of Washington have been invited this year that promised more reai enjoyment than is indicated by all the surround- ings of this trip Boats leave morning and after- noon The grounds at the White House offer ample opportunities for pleasant strolls ; its trees seem to grow for the purpose of hanging swings in the shade, and the spacious saloon bas been tested by too many bappy couples in the merry mazes ef the dance not to be known as one of the best ballet floors in this vicinity. Everybody will be there to give Withers and his band a bumper. CLEAR Tae War '!—The habit of persons at- tending the Centre Market of bringing handcarts in the gang ways is a serious inconvenience to the great majority, whose comfort should be consid- ered by the authorities. F frequently crowds are seen in the gangways, and though all appear anxious to move, they are obliged to remain sta- tionary some momeuts, and when they find out the reason, it ix because some one has hauled a handecart into the yaugway, and no one can pass till the load is deposited. The Clerk has an- nounced bis determination to break up the prac- tise If persous wish to use handcarts, let them place them outside the ganzways and send their provisions to them asthey are purchas:d. Haud- carts are very usefal for market purposes, and all have aright to use them, but not to the in- convenience of others. 1.0. O. F_—The report of John T. The showers during last evening were sufficient to create enough mud to make the walks un- comfortable, but this inconvenience cannot be avoided until the water pipes are laid and the avenues and streets repaved.
