— LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Camp Mzetincs.—The season has commenced tm whieh the members of the Methodist Church im thisgountry hold their camp meetings. The harvest is ended, and the churches and srcieties im the rural districts meet together for religious =. A grove is always selected, away from Populous cities, and companies are formed jn tne churebes of the surrounding country, and, gies themselves with tents and provisions or a week's encampment, they meet together at the appointed time. Generally, those meetings are interesting. and thousands flock to thern from all sections. It is usual for the presiding minis- ters of the Methodist denomination to engage their clergymen frem distant stations for services at the camps. Quite a number of the Methodist Protestant members have already left the city for camp meetings in various sections of Maryland We have before us a list of the camp meetings of this Church, and the ministers appointed by Rev. Mr. Roby, president of the Maryland Conference; some of which are already begun. as follows: Dorchester, Drawbridve, August 6; for this Meeting nine ministers were appointed. Mauy of cur citizens have started for that local- ity, and extensive arrangements bave been made for their aecommodation. Among the ministers appointed we see the names of several who were very popular while serving at stations near this city, vig: Rev. Messrs. Josiah Varden and D. Evans Reese and Dr wentzel At the Baltimore Circuit the ministry is strong- ly represented. and among these appointed are Rev. Messrs. Eli Henkle and Geo Hs Hamilten, who have becn withdrawn from the regular ser- viee by reason of age and inficmity. Their ap- pearauce at the camp will induce the attendance of many of the venerable members of the denom- iwation, who remember them in their early min- istry a balf century since. Tue ministers yenerzily are known to ns by Teputation. and appear to be the best of the Cor- ference. We have mentioned the above because of their numerous friends and acquaintances here,~who are always glad to hear from them To those who wish to withdraw for a short time trom the heat and dust of the city, and mingle among moral and religious company, the Harvest Home and the camp on Baltimore Circuit offer favorable opportunities as the distance ix not great, the expense not worth consideration and the arrangements for comfort excellent. Tatars Yestervay —Justice McKenna was kept busy yesterday with the trial of cases under the Corporation laws: Lucinda Bailey was arrested by Officer King, for being drunk, disorderly, aud saying bad words he case was made plain, and Lucinda was ordered by the Justice to pay a fine of 85 and costs, or, in case of failure, to serve a term at (Queen's villa. Washington, August 12, 1558. peace in the Home of NIA: FE. Ricn Case.—Yesterday afternoon the case of the Corporation against John Seitz for throwing uilth on the door of the residenceof C H. Phelp-, and George Seitz for disorderly conduct, was taken up for a further hearing by Justice McKer- na, at the office of Justice Donn. The office was filled by a wondering audience, composed in pa:t of the witnesses, male and female ; some dozen police officers, who were not in their districts and appeared to have no business to attend to ; and a few county constables, acting in the capa- city of prompters, much to the annoyance of the Justice, the defendants’ counsel and the wit- nesses. During the examination of the witnesses for the prosecution the counsel received a hint a minute, from the accused and half a dozen learned bailiffs, who appeared to be greatly inter- ested in the result. This annoyance proceeded until the Justice ordered one prompter out of the office, and announced that another such interfer- ence would meet with a committal to jail. Not- Withstandiag this declaration some of the police fticers and bailiffs continued their improper duct. A discussion next ensued between the Justice and the counsel, growing out of his honor remarking that he did not want the counsel to question the witness and answer for him. The position and rights of the justice and counsel were defined and the case proceeded, and after much difficulty bronght toaclose. George Seitz was dismissed, and John Seitz ordered to pay $10 aud costs. It ought, however, to be remembered by the sermonizers and writers upon this prolific theme, that the class they preach about never hear them preach. The guilty parties are often negroes, aud debased people whose vocation is to drive horses and oxen, and who never read newspapers nor go to chapel; therefore they must be reached, and the reforma- tion be brought about, by other and more direct means.
