A SPORTING GROUND. A correspondent of the New York Spirit of the Times gives the following description of quite a famous _ for fishing and shooting, in this neighbo: : “* Hell Hole is three miles below Alexandria, On the estate of the late Dennis Johnston, and was originally a part of Lord Fairfax’s exten- sive domain in Eastern Virginia. It is a vast expanse of mud, stumps, water-plants, and water, with here and there a narrow strip of dry land, just sufficient to affurd a dwelling place for its terreous inhabitants, girted bya woru-out embankment—for an attempt was made many years ago to reclaim it—the outer — of which is washed by the waters of the Potomac river, Hunting and Muddy creek, while along the entire length of its inner bor- der grow in rank luxuriance, and close set, large and tall water-oaks and sycamores, among the exposed and twisting roots of which can be seen at this season many beautiful varieties of the marsh snake. Through this embank- ment the water has by long continued striv- ings forced its passage at many points, and now rusbes and dashes alternately in and out. uroving in unison with the river tides, and Wearing away slowly, inch by inch, the dykes, until iu a few years nothing of it will remain, and the king fishers which now build their nests in its rugged sides, will have to seek some other hiding piace. ** Hell Hole is a grand, wild place, and, save for the miasm and mosquitoes which reign there pre-eminent, would be a magnificent abode for those fond ot following the pursuits of Nimrod and Walton Init the big game of Virginia long maintained a epee and it bee Sly within the past few years ta fa tases its wild recesses could be made with: ut crossing tracks of many red deer; now, however, owing to the pot-hunters—those pests of city neighburhoods—the antlered monarch, and with him all the larger game, have been driven away, and a remnant only of the smaller stock remains in sole possession of this once well-populated swamp Bat in regard to its piscatorial qualities, it is now as famous ad it ever was, and the many moss-covered roots hidden in shady nooks ai- ford easy seats for those who, angling, angle for the black-backed perch. This note was induced by an evening's sport in Hell Hole. It happened a few evenings since, ently after the wharf watch was set, that a lain-looking countryman was seen to leave a brig lying at pier No. 6, with a suspicious look- ing bundle in his hands. It was a large pack- age and a heavy one, and the stranger tugged along slowly up the pier with it, and turned the corner, sweating under his load. “ Aha! my fine fellow,” ejaculated thelynx- eyed inspector —a sharp-set official by the way— “aba! I've got you this time!’’ and approaching the countryman. he said “Good evening. Let me relieve you of that load, my friend.” ,’ responded the man uneasily. ‘I'll take that bundle, if you please.”’ “Thank you.” “It'sheavy, isn’t it?’ said the officer. “Yaas. Which way you goin’, nabur?”” “Come along—it’s all right; I'l take care of this—come on!” “Edzactly—much obliged. It’s tarnal heavy, an’ I’ve got to git it up to the Howard House.” “Come along, continued the officer, know- ingly; ‘‘we'll see about that!"’ and in a few minutes they reached the Howard; when the stranger observed that the inspector had no idea of baiting. “Hallo! h way friend’ I’m stopping here,” said the countryman. “It'sno matter. I’ve seized this property, and you can explain matter: at the Custom-Iluuse to-morrow,’ continued the shrewd inspector. “Luk here, friend! Not tew fast, if yew please. I've paid my doeties on that ’ere lot o'goods. Jest you look at this neow,’’ and he drew forth a bit of paper from his vest pocket, signed by the Collector. “Why, you scamp!”’ said the inspector, “this isa permit fur your goods! Why didn’t you show this before ’’’ “Why, in the fust place, you didn’t ask me tew; and. in the next place. ef 1 had. you'd seen me break my back afore you'd ha’ bro’t that buudle clear up bere fur me, I know '” The inspeetor blowed his nose, and, cursing the countryman fur a fool, turned down Pine street instanter, to resume his lonely round. The stranger put his parcel in the charge of the servant, and grinned a ghastly grin, as the over-zealous watchman departed. Tus Avescer.—We find the following item in a late number of the Review, published at Cleveland - One day last week, there passed down on the steamer Michigan a man having in irons an other who had some three years since seduced his sister. The seduction was under promise to marry, and the wedding day fixed, but the seducer ran away the day befure. The brother of the injured woman started in pursuit and caught him at Erie, but by some means the rascal escaped. The brother still kept on his track and found him again, but again he lost him. Month after month passed on, and the resolute brother passed on in pursuit, but ould get no trace of the object of his search. A little while ago, however, he saw a paper published at Ripon, Wisconsin, in which the mame of the seducer appeared as editor. Thither he went, armed with a Tequisition @.. from the Governor of Pennsylvania, and ar- rested him, and now, after a pursuit of three f years. has the violator of his sister's honor rmly in his grasp. The parties live in Penn- *ylvania, but where or what their names are, we failed to learn Dyixe or Fat deorgia correspondent of a Savannah physician, writes the following instance of death from the accumulation of fat: We had a young man residing 18 miles from this place, who was one of the miracles of na- ture. At the age of 22 years, he weighed 563 ibs; he continued gradually to increase in flesh, until he reached over 600 lbs.; he was able to get about with tolerable ease to bim- self, aud attend to his planting interest. Some weeks ago he commenced inereasing in flesh very rapidly, and gained 1 Ibs. per day; then it was fouud he gained a little over 2 Ibs per day. Last week he died suddenly in his ehaise, I think from the accumulation of fat around the heart. Three days prior to his death, he weighed 646 Ibs, and had be been weighed the day of hisdesth no doubt he would Lave gone over 660 Ibs. A Car Nor Constverep Prorerty.—aA “eat may look at a king,”’ says a quaint old proy- erb, but a jury of twelve men have decided that acat hax a right to forfeit bis life when disturbing the quict of any neighborhood in this community. We learn from the Newark Evening Journal, t a suit was tried in that enlightened city last week, before a justice, brought to reeover $15 fur losses sustained in the death of @ cat, alleged to have been shot by defendant. Counsel on both sides made eloquent ad- dresses to the jury, the main poimt being whether a cat is or is not property. The iti retired ut So'clock, and came in about ale. * past 9, with a verdict of “ No cause for section.” ‘The ense excited great interest, and the jus- tice’s office was crowded with anxious specta- tors during the trial. Let this be a warping to the feline species. : VOL. XII. Som Susise LETTER FROM SUT LOVINGOOD, oF TENNESSEE. The well known correspondent of the Nash- ville Union, sends the following braces of good ones of that paper : Jim H tells us @ good yarn about one of our “‘shell-bark lawyers.’ ‘His client was on two small charges, “frivolous charges,”’ Shell-bark designated them, forging a note of hand and stealing a horse ) On running his eye over the jury, he didn’t like their looks, so he pre] an affidavit for continuance, setting forth the absence in Alabama of a principal wit- ness. He reads it in a wisper to the prisoner, who, shaking his head, said, « Squire, I can't swartothat ar dockymint.”’ « W hy?” “Kase Ait haint true.’ Old Shellinflated and exploded loud enough to be heard throughout the room, “*What! forge a note an’ steal a hoss, an’ can't swartoalie’ D—n such a squeamish stumick, es that! {’m done with sich infernal fuols.”” And be left the conscientious one to his fate. «1 (er ¢ ~*~ * * *~ * Now for Shell-Bark again. Showing whatan unexpected course a ‘‘ law case” can take when it tries itself. Jim Thomason was “ hed up” for taring down a house, breaking the delf, and flingin’ an oman into a mill pond? The ease came up before two Justices of the Peace for a mountain district. Court was to be held in a log school house in July. There was acloud of Witnesses and no cloud over the sun ; while the Prisoner's guilt was quite clear, and old Shell verycool. After soft suaping the two old specta- eled gourd-bheads about their intelligence and ees legal ability, he drew from his saddle- ags & greasy copy of ‘ Cobb,’ and read there- form that “ whar an emergency arose requiring the temporary absence of the defendant's coun sel not gwyne beyant four hours and fourteen minits, the counsel mout demand (to futher the ainds ov justice) that all parties to the ease should be put onder rule waitin’ his return. an’ ef he said beyant his time verdict was to be given against his client by the court while under rule.”” Whereupon he claimed to have forgotten & book—would be back in two hours—and de- manded the operation of the rule as to the court, witnesses and spectators. One of thecourt sail, * twould be powerful hot in the house.” “Very well,’ said old Shell, “we will go out in the dog fennel inthe field,”’ and ordered the court to the shade of a porsimmon tree, the witnesses undera eletap oh chase: the spectators to the shade of a blackberry thicket, the pri oner on a stump, and the constable mounted a mound in general charge of the motley crowd, each lot separated about forty yards from the other. Old Shell mounted his horse, and as he passed the stump he remarked to the prisoner: *- Jist es soon es the top of my hat sinks behind yan bit, du you jistrun like hounds wer arter you, an’ mix yerself in that tbhieket, an’ never be seed in these parts agin,” which order was fully obeyed. The constable started in chase, but bethought himself the prisoner was but one party out of four. so he returned to stand guard over the remaiuingthree. After a while the spectators broke in a crowd ; still it was two to one, and he remained with the “‘court’’ and the witnesses, and the last Old Shell heard from him, there he was still in change of the “court,” exhorting him to “‘stend Squnre up to his duty ef hit lasted till Gabriel blow’d bis horn.”’ Tt is needless to add that Shell has not practiced before that court since, tor bas he been on that circuit. Old Shell is prudent as well as sagacious. ————+2+e- AN ALLEGED FREE-LOVE AFFAIR. (From the Cincinnati Times, sth inst ] About 10 o'clock last evening tho residents of Seventh street near John were aroused by the noise of a fierce struggle and screams in the residence of David (Quinn, Esq. A number made their way into the house, and found Mr. Quinn beating with a slung shot a Dr. Brakie, an inmate of bis house. © parties were sep- arated, and Policemen Ackley znd Meyers ar- riving, both were taken into custody. They were locked up in the Ninth-st. station house. Mr. Quinn svon procured bail and was released, bat Braskie was still in custody. The latter was badly injured. His head was cut in several | Se by the slung shot, and the wounds bled reely. The charge against them was fighting, but the case had not been called ata late hour. There are many rumors afivat concerning the affair, but the feitewing seems to be the truth of the matter as ueyr as we can get at it. The parties are spirituslists. Mr. Quinn is a re- spectable wember of the bar, and has always been aquict, honorable citizen. Brakie pre- tends to be a * spiritual physician,” curing diseases se! the means taught in the new phi- losophy. He came to this city several months ago, and made quite an impréesion by exercis- {ug his healing powers; but with all that he was nd bat not the means of establishing imself in his new and quaint business. Mr. Quinn, having every contidence ia his honesty, and supposing him to be a gentleman, intro- duced and established bim into his family, and did all that kindness could suggest. Receutly, Mr. Quinn had cause to suspect an undue intimacy between Krakie and Mrs. Q. The latter is a lady who has heretofore borne an unimpeachable character, and it was only positive evidence of her waywardness that roused the suspicions of her husband. To as- sure himself positively, however, Mr. Quinn in- formed his wife yesterday that he was going to the country for several days, and, making preparations, left the house apparently with thatintention. In the evening, he managed to make his way to his house unobserved, and was there but a short time before his suspicions were fully confirmed. He immediately rushed upon Brakie, and commenced inflicting punish- ment with aslungshot. Had he been let alone he probably would have killed him. he exact nature of the wife’s offending is not known beyond Mr Quinn’s own personal frie’ She, as well as the “ Doctor, ’ denies ¢riminal intercourse, and it may be that noth- ing further bas transpired between them than the gratitication of that * passional attraction’ said to be warranted in spiritual practice. Lhe affair has caused quite a sensation among the friends of the parties. A Boston Mrruop or Exrorcina Douestic ISCIPLINE.—Last evening the attention of Lieut. Wintcouwb, of the second police station, was called to a woman who was sitting on the steps of the court-house, and apparently in distress. He found her to be a matron of the mature age of 45 or thereabouts, and in reply to his interrogations she stated that her name was Anna Fitsgerald, and lived ia Congress Street. Finding that the situation was not altogether comfortable, the officer required her to rise. She reluctantly complied. The of- ficer’s curiosity was still further raised by what be observed, and he requested her to advance a step ortwo. She did so, and her movements led the lieutenant to further investigations. He gently raised the garments which would have covered the crinoline, if the Indy had in- y, and by 20 doing he made the discovery that, attached tothe Indy’s ankle by a stout chain and heavy brass pad- lock was a large flat-iron. This arrangement, i needless to state, seriously impeded her ments. At first she steadfastly refused to ieve the officer's wind by informing him how she came to be thus equipped, but the Suggestion of a night in the tombs induced her to disclose. According to her story, her bus- Laud ordered her not toleave his house during the day, and especially warned her not to visit Mrs. Dunlap’s snuff establishment fur the pur- pose of purchasing her commoditics, and in order to enforee obedience to his commands, invented and applied the above described ap- aratus. The machine did not work, however, for the wife went out Abougt snuff, and when accosted by the officer she was ei pees in fill- ing her box from the packages wie she car- ried. She was relieved of her inconvenient appendage by the police. The husband will be obliged to resort to some more ellective method of enforcin, family discipline —Bus- ton Post, August 7.
