_LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. _ a Gur Excursion —The unfortunate occurrence Massacbusetts avenue, on the might before last, gave rise to some appre- Rensions on the part of many of the lady friends of the parties that deterred them from Participating in the pleasures of the morning trip to Mount Vernon and Glymont yesterday. However. a goodly number did come, and with a lively company of the boys, amoag whom were the Philadeiphia delegation and their escort, the Party was agreeably constituted. The Collyer, Capt. Baker, and his faithful helps, were all in excellent ‘‘trim,"’ and the aforesaid boat, after getting clear of the Navy Yard and Alexandria, (at whieh points some accessions were made to the company already on board,) sped ra; idly and smoothly down the silver waters, which, with their verdure-clad borders loaned shifting a constantly and varying scene of beautiful views to the stranger friends and all others who were on the lookout for Nature in all her charming fresh- ness Bergman's fine cotillon band, which had been thoughtfully engaged for the oceasion, soon bad use for their stringed instruments; for, w upper deck the votaries of jm the ‘Terpsichore had as- sembled, and the merry dance went round with- ont interruption, until the arrival of the excursion to Mount bere long enough to dro) men and their friends of the Philadelphia fire- ernon. The steamer ben f stopped the Northern Liberties Fire-Company, and one or two others, and then sped on to Glymont, leaving the small party of some ten or twelve persons (two of them ladies) to follow at their leisure in a fast sailboat that had been provided for the purpose. A jotlier set of men never were thrown together on any occa- sion than this same their homage to the immortal dead. Bennett, the | skillfal themselves before the grave of V party who bad landed to pay skillfai photographist, was oben to transfer impressions of the Philadelphians upon glass, to be taken back with them to their homes 2s remembrnoces of their visit. Ascending the bill that leads to the tomb, the pate soon found ashington. After gazing upon the tomb and i:s surround- “ings in silent awe for a short time, arrangements were made to dayurrreotype the visitors. They were placed in poxitioc, and then the fun began. Ike A——, one of the Philadelphia visitors, than whom does not exist acleverer chap anywhere, could not be got to stand still for more than three-fourths of a second ata time. ‘Stand back a Hittle,’’ « B—, (preparing to open the i Tie callea im “stand back <0 “‘picter box, that I may get a good view of the sarcophagus.”? “What's that,’* says Ike, ‘what did you call it? Sar-sar-clo-fya—say that again, old fellow, while I write it down; what a word,”’ and no amount of persuasion could keep Ike stil! until a hearty laugh had been had all around. Then the party would be placed in ition again, and the ar- tist, after congratuiating them on being beauti- fully grouped for a “‘stunner,’? would lift the veil, and on the instant Ike would begin to “‘anicker,” anexample which would be instantly followed by the ladies and caught up by the men, till the unfortunate B—— would roll bis eyes in despair. Plate after plate was spoiled by this unfortunate word “ sarcophagus,’” uutil serious fears to be entertained that the party would never be able to obtain a picture At last, after Ike had had his fun out, Johnny C. cond not be made to stand still, and a number ef good pictures were thus ruined. Then Ike would draw bis comical face out to an inordinate length, and declare that old “ Slokarforeous”’ ) ¢meaning B ) was the sole cauce of the failure, ‘miter the aforesai 6 » towork decidedly * : Yiteonr: Mr Wim Jones, who spared no pains worked its way into the party, to steady his ves. Several really geod pictures were taken, and then the pact commenced a stroll over the place, and pluckes leaves, and culled pebbles, canes, &c , to their heart’s content. Owing to the obstinacy of a colored “+ gemman’ who was in charge of the house, an bance mammeomore to the astonisbed vis- itors the extraordinary anomaly of an pany 39 ible janitor, a stroll through the house was de- nied to them. This -‘ gemman’’ was strangely dignitied, and totally tnvensible to any bint in the way of proffered silver, informing the visitors Dat Ise de pusson in charge here, an misaux’s dinner is ready, an” we don’t recebe wisitors only on "tie’lar cashuns;"? so the party were compelled to content themselves with an external survey of the house they had traveled so far to stroll through At two o’clock, all assembled at the wharf and embarked on board the little sioop for Giymont After sliding along;sluggisbly out into the river for balf 2 mile to the channel, an unexpected dif- ficulty to further Lato, big heats itself in the way of a total cessation of the river breeze. The sun poured its brviling heat most mercilessly down upon the unprotected heads of t and the ladies were on the point of Every stratagem, known to the Tesorted to by Ike to raise the wi pose. All bands turned to, and set up a dismal whistle, which was protonged until the whole crowd was in a state bordering en distraction R_ stuck bis penknife in the mast, and sent upa silent petition to Eolus. No go hat obstinate mythological deity bad cag kr out. Despair Was complete aud terrible Jacle Jake I’. s xested smicide. [ke swore it was all the fault of old “‘Sclaopylenkis,”’ and proposed to have that grutieman immolated at once, as a sacrifice to the offended deity. After a good hour thus passed, a becalmed jungy Was spoken and overhauled. She was found to be loaded with watermelons. dozen of the largest were purchased and trans- ferred to the sloop, and then begun such a scene of butchery as would bardly find a parallel even in the bistory of the late Russian war. The twelve melons lasted just three quarters of a minute, and then no vestige of them could be found, save an occasional yreen rind which went floating away on the slow tide. The ladies, by this time, and even the gentlemen, were ll baked to the con- sistency of underdone roast beef; but this was but the beginning of sorrow, for the wind would not blow at all; and two and a half hours more of sun broiling were eked out upon that dreary waste of waters, before a melgbbering sehesner that had at last given it up, and cast ber anchor to wait the pleasure of the selfish wind, alforded the opportunity of shade by permitting the sloop to come under the protection of her shady side, where sbe remained, the baked up inmates being generously treated by the captain of the aforesaid schooner to a few sea biscuit and some glorious old water. After remaining here a short time, the welcome intelligence that the Collyer had hove in sight was communicated. ‘There she was sure enough, on het second trip to Glymont. The party hastil re-ermbarked, and signals of distress were hoisted, which were seen and returned by the people on the Collyer’s deck. She came alongside and three lusty cheers were exchanged, a repe was thrown, and the exhausted soff-rers taken on board, and—‘‘treated”’ to acceptable lager and sandwiches. A larve pa ty of pleasure-seekers were on board, and a short half bour brought the noble steamer to her moorings at Glymont. At Giymont the pleasure had been universal Dancing, pic aicking, pure water, pleasant shade, social conversation, ¢f a/, had been the order of the day. The late comers were well cared for, and the rescued castaways were resuscitated in a Most substantial and satisfactory manner by the z insist on his being forthwith introduced toa ees wicker-covered flask, which bad some- w 3 secompense them for their previous sufferings. er before was hot corn, tomatoes, sprin fathickeas, beef, ham, rolls, fresh butter, and ali “the little etceteras of a sumptuous repast more ib “2 ‘After a demolisued nor more enjoyed. juner came a short interval of repose, and then the dance went round, and kept goin Found till the repeated toll of the steamer’s be! warned the merry-makers that it was time to de- “sist from pleasure. The embarkation over, the boat left the romantic shores of Glymont at 10% o'clock, p. m., and steamed her way for home On board, the passengers arranged in groups ac- cording to mutual taste, and couversation, love- making, music, songs, and jokes whiled the time away until the steamer reached the wharf at Washington, at 12% o'clock, a.m. The regret- ful fasewell was then uttered, and the company di teed to their homes, and to re; bis was our first visit to Glymont, which we found to be in all ine one of the most agree- able retreats of the kind existin; anywhere in thiscouatry. Its commodious pe well arranged buildings, romantic strolling places, cool springs, sbady groves, &c.,&c.. ure most inviting to ali desirous of eseaping fora few houra from the glare of the city’s sua and the interminable dust and furnace heat of the city’s arid streets. It ix not wonderful then, that, managed.as well as it certaiuly is, it has already been visited by per- bape ten thousand citizens of the District and surrounding country. Town Drrrepstoks ix tHe Covuxtey.—The complaints made by the farmers, gardeners, and residents of the country outside the Corporation limits, of the impudent depredations made upon their property and premises by gs from the city, are just pow very loud and strong. The letter was received and care- fully treasured up by the recipiem, who isto-day a highly respeeted and wealthy citizen of Wash- ington. He taid the foundation of his present Er in the good precepts contained in this letter, which caused hii to reflect seriously upon the reckless course he was then pursuing, and finally worked in him a complete reformation He desires us to publish it, hoping that some wayward youth may chance to peruse it, and pause in a similar course of ruinous folly: Battimore, October 1, 1843. Correspondence of The Star. Gronertown, August 12, 1868. An accident of rather an alarming character occurred yesterday at the site of the Aqueduct Bridge, over Rock creek, which came very near resulting in the death of one of the stone cutters, a very worthy individual by the name of Joseph Willard hile the hands were engaged hoist- ing a iatee stone, one of the iron guys of the small derrick gave way and the derrick fell; one of the heavy iren guys striking in its descent im- mediately upon the crowa of Willard’s head laying the scalp open to the skull bone, a di: tance of some four to six inches, and peeling it off as It glanced nearly down tothe ear. ‘The force of the blow prostrated him to the round, from which he was taken, in an insensible and almost lifeless condition. By the use of restoratives be Was sdon brought to consciousness, and taken to his boarding-house on Bridge street (Mr. Jiles’) where several of our physicians were soon in attendance and dressed his wound. We are pleased to learn, this morning, that the injury is not considered very d ngerous, and thal be is doing wx well as could be expected under the cir- cumstances. We must again repeat our request that those persons who appropriate our Stems to their own use, Will be so accommodating as not to garble them to such an extent as tocause them toconvey ideas never intended by us; and we solemnly protest against their being used by any one for ieee [otal where the odium will be likely to fall upon us again. We regret to learn this morning that there is a considerable deficiency of water upon our canal ; upon some of the levels, we are informed that it amounts to from a foot to eighteen inches. ‘This deficiency will, while it continues, subject the beatmen to many inconveniences, besides com- pelling them to reduce considerably their car- goes. This deficiency is, in no sense, owing to any want of vigilance or want of attention upon the part of «he man: gers but wholly to the low stage of the water in the Potomac, and other streams by which the canal is supplied. The only arrival, since our last, is the sloop Lydia Ann, from Philadelphia, with coal to Bar- Ton & Son. The packet schr Arctic, flicks, of the Messrs. Dodge, the A. V.
