The Collyer arrived bere with the Third, Sixth and Fighth companies of the regiment about $2 o'ciock last eventng, and this morning about 6 o’elock the Mount Vernon brought up the Fisst, Second, Fourth, Fifth and Seventh companies. The companies were met at the Kettle Bottoms, where their steamer ground- ed. by Major Bacon, and Lieutenant’s Tucker and Owens, of the volunteer reginrental statf of this city, who came up in the Mount Vernon with them this morning. The Third. Sixth and Eighth companies, on their arrival here, repaired immediately to their quarters at the National Hotel, and were joined there by the Second company this morning. Tre First, Fourth, Fifth aud Seventh took up their quarters at Brown’s Hotel, having marched thither this morning on their arrival. No public ceremony of reception was given by our citizen soldiers, as on the receipt of the intelligence that the vistters were aground, the voluntecr battalion and the marines, who bad atientry awaited their arriva: at the A‘senal rom early yesterday morning till near 4 o’clock in the afteduoon: were dismissed, and surbse- quently no certain iafofimation as to the hour they would arrive was received in time to allow of the soidiery bere being again called together. ‘The honor ef our volunteer corps was, however, Weil taken care of by the staff officers, and the apparcat delinquency of tue companies is readily excusable The visitors express themselves bighly satis- Sed with their trip thus far, and but one really unfortunate circumstance has occurred to mar {heir pleasure. That oneis, however.sad enough to cast a gloom over them ail, and will also fill with grief some fond friends of an amiable and generally beloved member of the regiment. We allude to the accidental drowning of private Lawrence Hamilton, of Company 6th is sad misadventare occurred at Richmond, and it is supposed that the deceased accidentally fell nto the river while getting on board the steamer Gleu Cove, which conveyed the company from the wharf to their own steamer, the Ericson His remains have been found, and are ordered to be sent on to this city, where they will be taken in charge by a committee, and conveyed to his friends iu New York Weare told that the de- ceased is a grandson of the illastricus Alexander Hamilton, of Revolutionary fame, being the son of Jno. Fourtn District Feaate Hien Scwoor —In our notice of this school, published a few days ago, we were compelled to such brevity as to omit mentioning several noteworthy features of the examination, and therefore are induced to refer to the subject again. The map drawing and sketebing were especially meritorious. The samples of the former submitted to our jnspec- tion were us follows: Maps of Fiorida and South America by Laura Thonias; of South America, the British Isles, British North America, Florida, and the United States, by Geneva Reed; of France, by Josephine Lee; of North America, Kate Riel: and of South America, by Annie tlley. The sketches were, A Rural House, by Avennda Hinton; A Doorway, by Lizzie Shiek ; A Cascade, A River Scene, A Serenading Scene, A Log Cabin, and buman beads and outlines, by Geneva Reed; A Country Honse, by Henrietta Ager; the same, by Marianne Stewart: A Door- by ny Hall; the same, by Aunie Hin- = leads and outlines by Annie id Clementina Magee. We were also showa a number of specimen compositions, of which the following isa list of the subjects embraced, with the names of the authors attached : The Moon, Coming of Spring, An Account of the Early Histery cf Boston, Flowers, Lightning. Naaman the hepat Night, September, and Nitrogen and Air, by Geneva Reed; Home, by Kate Riell; Nitrogen and Ain, by Viola Agness Hinton; Daniel in the Lion's Den, by Laura Thomas; A Lake Scene, by Hen- rietta Ager; and A Lake Scene, aud Daniel in the Liea’s Den, by Alice A. Hercus. The drawings of maps were exceedingly well done generally, and if it fell upon us to say which are the best, the task wonld be a mont difficult one to perform even to our own satisxfee- tion. The sketches also were very good, and several of them exhibited no little artistic skill, ‘The compositions, with a single exception, were beautiful examples of chirography, and the sen- tences were properly constructed im all of them. They evinced, ‘too, considerable originality of thought and active reasoning faculties, which, if cultivated heresfter, will contribute in placing these little authoresses in positions where they may exercise much beneficial intluence on soci- ety. ‘Phe tutoress of this school bas good reason to be proud of the successful results of her year's labors; and will, no doubt, be encouraged by this examination to continue more than ever vig- orously in the instillation of useful knowledve into the expanding minds of those committed to berecharge. We hope that Ler future may be marked with many such happy episodes as this. which causes our present writing. * be Sores Oticer, H E Droz ing Commissary, Capt. Henry Cragin. President Buchanan, Miss Lane, Miss Saun- ders, Mayor Crawford, Father M: tre, of ‘Georgetown Colleye, and others, occupied seats upon the platform. The distribution of preminms, interspersed ac- cording to the programme, with singing and harp and plano music, then began. thé venerable Chief Magistrate of the Unien conferring the awards upoa paspirants for lemic honors. Where the. music was so varied and faultless, we wiil not attempt to mention all the exquisite Pieces that were successively presented. but must content ourselves with naming a few of those that ‘we remember to have most delighted us. ‘‘Annie Lautie,’? sung by Miss Mary Dough- erty, and accompanied on harps by Misses Le Compte and Irving, was rapturously applauded. A duo, performed on barp and piano, by little Misses Kate Irving and Lilla K admired, both on account of its and the extreme youth of the little musicia: ins Kee- gan being obliged to stand to reach the key-board. “Adoro te,” duo et chaur, sung by Misses Douzberty, Forsyth, V. and £. Pizzini and Miss Bena Philips, and accompanied on piano and harp by Misses Le Compte and Wheatley, was universally pronounced tu have been the trlumph oft ening. ‘The last piece sung was the Coronation Ode, in which the solos were executed by Miss Dougher- ty, who whs the prima donna of the o-easion, re- ceiving the first premium for vocal uusic. After the Coronation Ode, the first honors of the Academy, ¢onsisting “of & crown and geld medat, were conferred on Misses Frederic of Ga., and Maybee of Ind. ‘The paintings of the first order were by Misses Maybee, Semmes, Pizzini, Frederic and Delau- ney. Misses Delaney, Joy and Bramball, excelled in embroidery. At the close of the ceremonies Rev. B. A. Ma- guire rose and congratulated the young ladies who had just beea crowned by the highest au- thority in the land ; he ho; they would regard thase crowns ax their br hiest ornaments aud wear them long, only to be exchanged for jnmor- tal jones In heaven. The exercises, he said, just concluded, gave a specimen of the training of thé Academy, and proved that it possessed merits rarely met with In similar institutions. He, as well as the President, was glad to see that the orgamenial was not cultivated to the prejudice of the useful—that while due attention was given to the embroidery, painting, and foreign tongues, the more homely and important branches of du- mestic economy and plain sewing, which, after all, were the more necessary paiticnlars of feinale education, were not overlooked in the distrivu- tion of rewards. He thanked the President for the gracefu ence he hud evinced under the laborious which he had just finished, and remarked the good taste which he displayed in choosing rather to appear on the present occasion, amid so fair an assemblage, than at the com- mencement of a neighboring institution (the Col- lege.) “Bacher Meqste having concluded, the pupils left the ball fn procession and the young ladies, inany of whom were bardened with the pleasing weight of their reward, met their rejoicing rela- tives and friends in the drawing-room of the Academy.
