XII. w fol lw - WASHINGTON, D. C., FRIDAY, JULY 9, 1858: ———————— Star. NO. 1,70: MY SISTER'S HUSBAND. I Iwas the youngest of a handsome family My three sisters, each in her way, were very pretty, but I, the youngest, and with a natural right to be the pet of the house, was never either @ beauty or a favorite. My rights in the mat- ter of favoritism were, and from the first day of her existence had been, entirely monopolized by my third sister, Carolive. I was not, how- ever, envious of thai; it doubtless suited her better to be made a pet, than it would have suited me. My lack of beauty I did regret; but, as that waut could not be remedied, I en- deavored to become reconciled to the tace and figure God had given me. These were both small, and the first sallow and thio. [t boasted, however, and boasts still, of at least one strik- ing featare—a pair of e black eyes y two eldest sisters were warried while I was still agir! at school. They both became the wives of military men, and both, within a year of their marriage, accompanied their hus- bands to India. [ have never seen either of them siuce. My third sister. however, remuined at home, and there I joined her when, a girl of seventeen, my schvol life ended. 1 was fond of Caroline, and she too, I believe, of me; yet her affection was by no means that of an elder sister for a younger. As I said be- fore, she, and not I, occupied the position of y est in our household. She was spoiled, while L was left uapetted; she was Battered and admired, while no eye looked at and no lip spoke of me; she was encouraged and alwost cowpelled to lean on other peopie, while 1 was left4o depend upon myself. Leame from school full of a bappy plan of life. We had no mother, and our father was a mill-owner, and for many hours each day away from home. These periods, when Caroline and I should be left together, E meant to turn to good account. I was better educated than she was, and [ meant to give her lesdons. {[ cared for study, and 1 meant to make her learn with me where I was most ignorant. I came home primed with wy project, and the first domestic tidings I received was the news that she was to be warried within six weeks She gave me the information herself, as I Stood taking off wy bonnet in my room—gave itmie with the prettiest blushes in the world, the smallest, timidest voice - so softly and , indeed, that at the first telling I neither hesed nor comprehended what she said. But, for any <ywpatby that she got, or was likely to get from me, I understood quick enough. Had either of my elder sisters been at the moment of this declaration in my place, she would, I do not doubt, have forthaith put her arms round Caroline's neck, and conveyed her congratulations to her with much affectionate kissing, and probably some few tears. I grieve to say that I in no manner approached any such demonstration. I simply expanded my black eyes till Caroline’s blue ones sank before them, and broke into one short sentence which I fear was ueither affecting nor conzolatory. Her lover was in the house, however, at that moment, and I bad to go down stairs and see him, as soon as I had smoothed my hair. [ found him in the drawing-room with my father, and my father presented me to him. “ Hallam, my daughter Anne.”’ “My daughter Anne” putout her hand. and it was enclosed aie See between a large palm and fingers—enclosed. but not grasped. 1 was sinall and cool; Mr. Hallam, on the con- trary, lurge and nervous. Whatto do with my band when be had got possession of it, or what to respond to the salutation that I made him, he seemed equally at a loss to know. Ie stood high above me, a tall, handsome young man, luoking into my face with a strangely-startled gaze fluttering my hand up and down with a leeble irresolute touch. * This is our youngest, our little school girl,” said wy father; “she is not much like Carry, is she’ ” ** No, certainly!” His eyes turned to Caroline’s face with a quick, beaming. pleasant lvok; his fingers dropped frum my band, and | retreated to my father’s side, taking to myself the consolation that if my ova reception had been neither ele- gant nor cordial, my sister’s future husband could, at least in regarding her, wear a look of manliness As for me. I thought it likely enough that Le would take little further notice of we. Lo this, however, 1 found myself rather singularly wistaken. He dined with us that day, and during the whole time of dinner I was cou- ecious of the continual movement of his eyes towards me [ became aware, too, that euch time he detested my gaze upon himself he be- came strangely discoucerted, to an extent that swazed me; be stammered and grew confused iu whut be said; he even more than once ab- ruptly broke ofl bis seutence. I grew both sur- prised and perplexed, yet except for this singu- lar nervousness, [ liked him. [ preferred bi decidedly to either of my other brothers-in- Jaw, and so [ told Caroline before we slept, for wy conscience smote me for the manner in which I had received the first announcement of her engagement, and sume amend for that coolness appeared to me called for Your busband will have more in him than vither Jane's or Harriet’s, Carry,” 1 suid, “ though it is a pity he dees not break himself of that nervous manner.’’ “ Did ba think him nervous ?”” “Am I deat and blind’ He seems to get over it, however, when he is accustomed to peo- ple; be shows none of it to you or to my fa- ther,” “But, Anne,”’ she said, “it is strange. I never saw any trace of such a thing in him be- tore “Did you not’ Then I suppose I must pecially discompore h m 1 am surry for that; because, ii he begins with a strong dislike to me, Le probably won't get over it. ~ My dear, he does not dislike you.” * How du you kaow ’”’ “ dfe almost said so, Anne. A looker on might bave woudered how they had ever got on befure I came. so constant now were the appeals to ine, so eager the questions ‘ what Auuve thought?’ “what Anue advised ?’°— questions, however that were rarely asked traukly or cheerfully, as though my opinion was cared for because I myself wus liked. but always—strange as it seemed, it was certainly so ~as if in a kind of continued incomprehen- sible fear of me. iu many respects he was a strange man, and as time went on I was by no means heartily satisfied that he should marry my sister. Ie Was subject, [ soon found, to fits of gloom and low spirits which had, even al: ry, & most depressing effect upon her; the more tuat, fund of Lim as she was, she was too timid a creature ever at these times to be able to summon cour- age enough to attempt to rouse him. There he paced, for two long hours, gloomy as night, yet obedient to every word I spoke. Where L went, he followed me ; what I bade him do, he did. I brought him home as the sun was set- tiug, and I went up stairs and shut myself in my own room, with a strange chill teeling of dismay. What was I that this man should so obey me’—doing my slightest bidding with this aspect of spiritlesa fear? After this day I mude oue strong effort ‘e Prevent wy sistor’s marriage. [ spoke both to my father aud toher. Her I ere intensely auserable by what I said, and my father [ in- spired with enongh anxiety and alarm to in- duce him to speak forthwith to Mr. Hallam. I was present at the interview between them, and I shail not quickly forget the ghastly look of pain that came to Mr Haliam’s face us wy tather told him our fears of trusting Caroline to bis keeping. Te was standing up by the fire, aud, grasping tho mantel shelf with one band, with a clutch that brought the bluod to every vein, he listened. When my father ceased to speak, he could only piteously ory— * Yon gave wo your promise '’’ “Tdid,” my father suid; “but I gave it in ignorance of what I have since seen, and in ig- uoranuce of what J bave heard from others.’’ * From what others?” he demanded fie ely. 1 came forward and said, “ From me.”’ © From you, Anne !"’ lie looked up wildly in my fuee; then sud- denty his head dropped, he laid it down upon the mantel-shelf, and burst into tears. Inexpressibly shocked, [ came beside him. * Krederick, for God's sake, be calm!" Broken with sobs his @ Tose up. “Anne, have merey on me! Dv not take her trom me! She is all L have in the wice world!” The tears were coming to my eyes. My father silently took me aud put me from the ruom. Ile was a soft-hearted man, and could not stand the sight of Mr. Hallam’s misery ; bat he had a scuse of his own dignity und, in consideration of it, IL suppose, he turned me out before he yielded. 1 avoided Caroline and went to my own room. Haif an hour afterwards [ was summoned to my father’s study. He addressed me as I entered at once. ' * Anne, be has behaved very well. Me bas promised to use every effurtin his power. ‘Things will go uu better now, I have no doubt.’ *« Then he is to have Caroline ?”’ “I eannot break their hearts, Anne. They may have something to bear éoretier, but they would have wore,to boar apart.” 1 saw Mr. Haljim no more that day. Our next meeting was on the following afiernoon. {met him then by chance for afew moments alone. What his feelings towards me might be I could not tell, but { went up to him us usual and extended my hand. At once he took and grasped it in both of his. “1 wanted to see you,’’ he eagerly. ‘Anne,’ he cried, ‘do not take part ag: inet us! For God's sake, be you our fiena! an did not act yesterday out of enmity,’’ 1 sald. His hands scopped from mine; he grew even ghagtly as he asked me, “ Do you mean to repeat what you did yes- terday ?”” I shook my head. I said—“ No.” He gave a cry of joy. “God bless you, Anne!” The warm tone pained me. I said, sadly enough, “You have had little cause to bless me, Fred. But, if you are willing, let us be friends now.”’ T gave him my hand again, and it wasclasped cordially. I bélieve that, in truth, he bore me uo malice. It wanted a fortnight to the day fixed for their marriage. During that fortnight Mr. Hallam was all that we could wish; there were no more fits of gloom. He was cheerful sen- sible, affectionate, and my father and Caroline brightened daily. The marriage day came, and she was wedded to him. 1 bade farewell to them ou a bright crisp February morning, aud saw no more uf them for nine mouths. II. At the close of that nine months I was sud- denly made an orphan. My father had long suffered from disease of the heart : one evening, us we sat alone together, I heard a half ery from him, and saw his head drop on his breasi. When I reached bim he was dead. I sent a telegraphic messaze to London to the Hallams, begging that Frederick might come down tw me. Sometime upon the fellowing day 1 hoped w see bim, and trasting to him to Spare me all (ue arrangements for the funeral, 1 shut myself up alone that day with my grief. But J waited fur him in vain; the day passed, and he did not come. I bad to rouse myself then, and give direetions for what had to be done. A second, and a third, and a fourth day clapsed, und I was still alone. On the fitth worning, When I was indeed w/ter/y alone, for the house was empty uow, Fat length received a letter from Caroline, with the postmark of a country place in Devonshire, whither they bad goue, she told me, on her hushund’s account, for rest and change of air. She bad neither received my message nor my letter, nor could I write to her now, for she yave me no address, 1 waited patiently, in my lonely house for a loog fortnight. One evening, when that time was expired, at last Frederick came. He came into the room where [ was sitting—the blithe bridegroun, whom I had parted from nine months ago, changed into a wan, worn, hag- gard man. Lheard his entrance, and rose up. Ile uttered my name as I approached him, then seized the hands that 1 extended to him, and held them in a convulsive grasp. “ You bave been aloue,”’ were the only words that burst from bis lips, “alone thruugh this whole time.’ “It could not be helped; I knew you would lave come if you eould have kuown.” « Alone!” he only repeated, shivering, “with- out a creature near you! How could you bear it? Levuld not live one duy alone.” relerick, you have tired yourself with your journey. You are pot strong. Caroline told me you had been unwell.’” He raised bis eyes, with a sharp, suspicious look, to my face ; but they stayed lifted only fur ® moment, Suddeuly changing into the old, incomprehensible expression of subjection, they dropped. He did not speak a word. ‘Come w the fre; I will order supper for you. Come and take thisseat. Itiscold to- le came and sat down; [ seated myself be- side him, and asked for news of Caroline. He had nothing to say but that she was well. I tried to aabe him talk of other subjects but the effort was vain. His mind seemed entirely filled with that strange haunting horror of my loneliness ; again and again, us we sat, like oue who had lost all self-control, he broke out into the same trembling exclamation, ‘* Good God! how could you bear it /”’ I sat at last quite silent, in deep wonder and distress. [ thought it was well that I Aud been alone. I could ill have stood companionship. such as this three weeks ago. With a woman's instinctive love for manly courage and strength, 1 began to feel a strange pity and euntempt for weak nature—these unstrung nerves, [ gave him food and wine, but they did wot re- store bim to himself. Me came back when he had exten, and crouched again in silence over the fire. _It grew late; the clock over the chimney- piece struck eleven. ‘Then L spoke onve more. * You must be tired, Frederick. After your journey Ser had better yo and rest.”” lle looked around with a wild shiver. “No, no; the house is so lonely,”’ he said. “Let me stay here Stay with me, Anne.” “ We cannot stay here all night ”” H “It would only be for one night. You will be ready to come to-morrow.’’ *<{ am pot going back with you, Frederick.” “Anne!” [to BB CONTINUED. Georgetown Advertisements.
