Those in Alexandria desiring to avait themselves of its immense circulation to bring their business, wants or other requirements to the notiee of the public had better call at his Period- teal depot. ——————— Wittarns’ Horst. —We bove mentioned the fact that Messrs. Willard areengazed in the erec- tion of a large addition to their already commo- « s hotel, but nntil recently we bad not sus- pected that it was in contemplation to push the work forward with the vizor that is now appar- ent. The main addition, which extends fom th east wing of the old building back to F street, distance of 127 fect, and with a breadth of 463; fet, is rapidly prozressing, and before the end of the present week will, no donbt, be run upto the third story. It is to be six stories high. and the fronts oa Fourteenth and F streets will be surmonated by a massive and handsome bracket cornice. The lower story of this will be an ex- tension of the dining-room, which is now very large, but with this addition will reach the length of 265 feet. and he cap da‘ing at the table nearly 700 pers Bevides this addition, the west wing of the old building wll be extended towards F st. about 50 feet, with a breadth of some 49 feet; and in tte urea between the two wings there is te be erected an additional building,55 feet long by 16 wide. ‘These additional buildings will add to area of sround covered by the od hotel 3,764 square feet, und as they are all to be six stories high, it will then be one of the largest establishments of its character in the country. ‘The entire hotel, when finisted, will accommodate upwards of a thou- sand guests, and possess every convenience for the comfortabie entectainment of some 70) regular boarders. The buildings ave ali of the very best material, and the work is b: ing done throngbout by the most able and? kil al workmen. The hotel isto be provided throughout with all the edern improvements for the comfort of itx in- » and the well-known racter of the ts. Willard warrants us in saving it can have re competent, gentlemanly and ebliging bests ‘The erection of the building ix after plans and under ttie direction of Mr. J. C. Harknes: > are chitect, and Mr. W. W. Chapin is the general superintendent of the carpenter work. The con- tractors for laying the brick, which ix, we be- ve, about the ouly portion of the work done under contract, are Messrs. Wise & Callahan. Nicholas Acker is the stone worker and mason ; Mess-s Baldwin & Bro., joiners, and Messrs. Filis & Bro. furnish the irom columns, girders, &c. The roofing is to be of Warren's patent composition. [tis contemplated to finish all the bulldings during the present season. ‘Tue Opera closed last night by the represen- tation of a part of two favorite operas, La Som- vambula end Elisire d@’Amore, ia which the whole company sustained their parts very credit- ably. It isto be regretted that their exertions to please the public have been so poorly rewarded during the season just closed. Miss Milner never snng more sweetly than last night, and no'withstarding the meagre andiene present displayed thronzhout the entire perfor ance charming desire to please, which wou for her golden opinions from every one. - In this sbe ‘was emuleted by the whole company * (Qui la voce” was sung by her towards the close of the Performance it: a voice full of richness and puke, whose bevutiful tones delighted the au- dience Mr. Guilmette again appeared in two cbarac- ters, both calculated to display his talent as an actor and his astonishing powers as a vocalist He was especially good as Dr. Dulcamara, the mountebank ; and in the closing scene sung with s'de-splitting effect the last song, ** Now, if I’ve © @pprobstion,” in which he “hoped, if his endeavors had pleased, he should have an oppor- tunity to sing again in Washington ncrt year.”’ Excellen’, Mr. Guilmette! you are always wel- ¢ toa Washington audience, and we hope to see you and Miss Milner, and Rudolphsen, and Cooper ef al, again whea the weather gets cooler—say about next October. To-nignt, Mr. Cooper's company will give a rand farewell concert.and Mr. C. will play sev- eral solos on the violin. All efforts will be used to make the atfair pleasant to the public. Pieasant Excursions.—Yesterday morning a large nv of our cit enjoyed themselves by participating in excursions to Fort Washing- ton. One of the excursions was under the aus- pices of the Second Baptist Sabbath School, and the tip was made in the steamer Powhatan, which left Sixth street wharf at 5 o’clock. touch- img at the Navy Yard and Alexandria. This was patronized by a large number of persons, and every arrengement was made for the accommo- dation and satisfaction of the excursionists. The committee who had control on the occasion were Charles Allen, James Dulin, Charles Schafer, J B. Cawood, William Miils. The other excursion was that of the Wangh Chapel (M. This excursion was arcom- panied by Withers’ band of music, and nothing was left undone to insare the happiness of the entirecompany. The following geatiemencom- posed the committee of arrangement«: Messrs. Jobe R. Zimmerman, J. W. McKnew and Ed- ward G. Handy. As far as we ean learn no unpleasant circum- nce transpired in connection with either ex- cursion ; and the day was spent by both in a very Lappy and sgreravle manner. ‘Tae City Dest —On Monday afternoon, when the bill supplementa! to the potice bill was under consideration in the Common Counel!, Mr. Orme opposed it upon the ground that our city treas- ury was in no condition to justify such an act. He wonld venture to say, that when the bills Were all rendered, the floating debt of this city would prove to be over $200,000. A scheme had been laid before the people to increase the funded debief the city. The iden bad been yiven out that it was to lay pipes to convey water: but he thought the plum was laid deeper, and had a view te funding 2 portion of the debt already accumu- lated. But a sufficient vote of the people did not endorse the scheme, and it failed When the bill in r lation to the recent tax sale, which is to authorize the acceptance of certain bills and claims agatnst the Corporutién in pay- ment for property bought at that sale, was under consideration, sever! gentiemen desized to know more avout it. and hoped it would not be urged throazh at that time, as it was an important tnat- ter. Mr. Lloyd hinted that probably many of these cizims had been purchased by moneyed men, for speculation, and he wax op to ax- sisting the shaving @perations of moneyed men, when so many poo? Men, who could not aiford to wait for their money, were sulfering for want of the pay honestly duethem. Tus Lapies’ Usion Festiva, recently held in this city, proved very successful under all the cireumstanees. If it did not realize as large a sum @s last year, it was owlag to the many sub- jects occupying the attention of our citizens, the Dumerous felizious meetings, the closing week of Congress, aud other good reasons. ‘The dis- play of tlower fr nd the decorations of the hall far exceeded those of the previous fes- tival, and the ladies who bad it in charge exerted their utmost energies to promote the success of the enterprise. The receipts from each table was as follows, deducting the expenses attend- ang cach: S-coud Presbyterian, (Mr. Eckards) Thirteenth street and First Baptist. 360; Wesley Chapel, 852.75; E. street Baptist, $15 29; Fourth Prespyterian, (Mr. Simit’s) $1t; Metho- dist South, $57 deiland’s; S32 > 25 S532 The : sale of tickets, $9 25—total receipts, $619 $1. Exx- ensex for hall. music, decorations, doorkeepers, © , &e., S114 40—leaving a nett profit of $166 11 for the benefit of the Young Men’s Christian Association. Crimisat Count —The docket for the present term is very small, containing but about thirty trinl cases, the most of which will probably be tried during the term, together with such cases as may be found by the Grand Jury. In all probability the term will not continue above three weeks at furthest. The petit jurors were yesterday dismissed until Thursday next, there being no cases that could be got ready for trial before that day. The Grand Jurors will, how- ever, be in session in the interim, to investigate such cases as may be brought to their notice Accipext.—Yesterday afternoon, a Mr. Davis, engaged in tearing down some old buildings in the rear of Witlards’ Hotel, fell from the wall of the syme, a dista: of some ten feet, and struck on his head ia a Leap of old bricks and rubbish. Correspondenes of The Star. Gronezrown, June %, 1888. The body of another individual was found flaating in the Potomac, opposite our wharves, yesterday afternoon. From certain indications, we are inclined to believe that bis death was Drought about by foul means, or a species of un- justifiable mischief. It appears that the Individ- ual returned to our city on Saturday last, in the sloop American Banner, from a fishing trip down the river; he was paid off Sunday morning, and spent the day around the wharves and fish dock, drinking. He was seen at the fish dock at a late hour on Sunday night, from which time nothing was seen or heard of him until his body was found as above stated, with n new check cotton shirt tied tightly over bis head and around his neck. He stated to the captain of the American Banner, while down the river, that his name was Wm. Murray; that he was a ‘native of Norfolk, Va., where he had an only sister residing. He also informed him that he was a pump and block maker, and that he served bis time in Philadel- phia. He sometimes called himself John Carey. Coroner Woodward held an inquest in view of the body, and the jury rendered the following verdict, viz: “That the deceased was seen on Sunday evening, Jnne 20, 1858, about the wharves of Georgetown very mnch intoxicated, and that on the 22d of said mouth, he was found floating down the Potomac river with a shirt tied over his head and around his neck, and from the evidence the jury are unable to determine whether the shirt was placed there by himself or some other person, or whether he came to his death by foul means or by accidentally falling overboard They also find that he was very poor and bad no means *? ‘The body was taken to the poor house and interred. Complains are frequently being lodged with us about the conduct of a number of young men and youths who are the habit of congregating about the corner of High and Second streets, and. indulging in conversations and conduct as dis- graceful to themselves as it is annoying and offensive to complaining neighbors. Weare in- fumed by highly respectable persons, that fre- quently their vulgar talk and indecent exposures #re such as to compel persons living near by to retreat to the back portions of their houses to keep thelr own senses from being shocked, and the morals of their children from being contam- inated. In some instances, we are inforined, they have been known to continue at this point nearly the entire night. We learn, this morning, that the land slide at the tunnel upon the canal bas been nearly re- moved ; that the eribs at dam No. 4 were com- menced to be putin place on Monday last; and that, if no further accident shall ocenr, the water will be let on tbe entire length of the line early next week. If this very desirable result should come to pass navigation will be fully resumed by the close of the ensuing week. The only daughter of Aldermen J. A. Magr- der, a very amiable young girl of sixteen years of age, died yesterday morning, after a brief ill- ness, of typhoid fever. No change in the markets, and but little doing in flour or grain.
