Tux Pestic Schoors.- The annual examina- tions are being conducted by the present Board of Trustees with praisworthy carefulness and attention toeach department. There is apparent among them an awakened interest on the subject of the welfare of the pupils, which is added to by the zeal manifested by the several teachers. in the First District, yesterday afternoon, Prim- ary No.4, second department, was examined by Major PF. Bacon, and the pupils were inter- Togated with a view of ascertaining the under- standing which they bad of the branches in which they had been instructed. A rigid nestioning ineach branch proved most satisfactorily that the exertions of the jnstructress had been effectual in xiving to them a thorough practical insight into all the fandamental principles of education. The classes were arrayed admirably, were neat and clean in their apparel, and their deportment throughout the afternoon most unexceptionable. ‘Their animated and happy faces pave evidence of kind and affectionate treatment on the part of their peop Miss eas The — was a ined in orthography, reading, spelling, menta! and practical aslkesetie: aad geography, and gave prompt and correct answers. Miss Mills is certainly en- titled to the fullest praise for her excellent man- agement, and successful bringing forward of the pupils entrusted to her. At the close of the ex- amination, the pupils were addressed by the ‘Trastee, and complimented for their proficiency in their studies, and encouraged to go forward with industry in the nobie work of preparing themselves for future usefulness [The reporter tenders thanks to a brizht-eyed little miss in white dimity and pink ribbons for *® beautifel floral favor which he received on taking leave of this interesting school. } The examination of Primary No. 1, First dis- trict, Miss Ritchie, teacher, gave great satisfuc- tien toall present. In the various branches of orthography, reading, Taphy, and arithme- tic (mental and practical) the pupils gave evi- dence of having been thoroug bly taught; and the Promptness and correctness with which their answers were given, and the ability to hee the why and the wherefore psy saan declare that they are highly favored in having such a teacher. ‘The neat appearance and exemplary deportment of the scholars clearly show the power of exam- ple. During the examination the pupils perform- ed several pieces of vocal music greotly to their own credit, and to the gratification of their pa- trons and friends present. Of those present and examined a com- mendabie proficiency in the several studies taught during the year was displayed. The classi- fication of the children with reference to their studies is good, their personal appearance neat, aud the onder and discipline admirable. The greater number of the children in this depart- ment of the school are very young, from six to niae years old, requiring tact and patience to produce and maiatain the sys'em essential to the Progress of so many congregated in the same Teom. Miss Reed has fully succeeded in this delicate duty. The recitations were confined to orthography, reading. writing from dictation, and arithmetic. ‘The classes generally compare favorably with others of a similar grade else- where, and in the first and iast studies Miss R.’s fist class was excellent. Primary School No. 4, Second district. was esterday examined by Win. J. The scholars were neatly dressed. and snswered the questions asked them on their course of studies in a manner most cred- itable to themselves, and retiecting the highest praise upon the skili and assiduity of their in- structors. Vocal music by the children varied the exercises. This school stands deservedly bigh among the Primaries of the city. A new scuoel-house is all that is needed to make it the beau ideal of a primary school. ‘The second department of Primary School No 1, of the Third District, was yesterday examined in presence of several friends of the school and Charles Wilson, trustee. This department cou- sists of the ki fourth and sixth classes of the school, compo: of 29, 16 and 12 Upils, respec- tively. The examination was highly satisfac- tory. On that day, James Powers, to whom frequent allusion has heretofore been made in the Star, will expiate his crime by yielding up his life to the violated and avenging law. In consideration of his youth there is, as one would naturally ex; ta good deal of sympathy towards bim ertained by many of our citizens, and we are glad to say that this extends even to the officers of the law in whose custody he is held, and who will execute the sentence inst him. Since his conviction, he has enjo: every ae conformable with rison discipline which these officials could ex- end to him, and nothing has been left undone that would contribute to Lis comfort, and bis op- accep | for making preparation for the end which shall speedily overtake him. His spiritual advisers are Rev. T. J. O'Toole, of St. Patrick’s, and Rev. Mr. Edelin, of St. Dominick’s church ; and with them he has been an object of extreme solicitude and assiduous at- tention. Theireftorts for bis realization of Divine mercy and forgiveness have also been greatly pro- moted by the untiring labors of the Sisters of Mercy, two of whom have visited him almost daily since bis trial, and held protracted conver- satio: ‘ith him on the consoling influences of relizion. Under such instruction, the spiritaal condition of the prisoner has xradually improved, until Le now expresses entire resignation to his fate, and firm hope of biessedness in the life to come. He has also frequently signified great grat- ification at the intelligence that the murdered man, Lutz, obtained peace of mind and assurance of Divine forgiveness before his death ; and ap- parently derives much consolation from that re- flection. His mother and other relatives, male and female, spend a great deal of time with him, and contrivate all in their power to cheer him in his trying situation The rumor that an attempt would probably be made to rescue him, has induced the President to detail a large force of marines to guard the jail, who are in attendance constantly, day and night. This report, by the way, does not seem to be founded on anything with which the pris- oner or his friends are acquainted, and notwith- standing the precautions used, very little im- stance is attached to it by the officers of the Jail. The sri resin | of any such design being successfully carried out is sutticient of itself to allay all apprehension that the attempt will be wade. = 4 The preparations made already for the execn- tion consist in the appointment of officers for the several duties and the erection of the scaffold Marshal Selden is determined that every thing shall be conducted with the greatest propriety, and that the requirements of the law shall be faithfully performed in every particular. He will, therefore, conduct the execution entirely private, admitting no more persons to witness it than the statute provides for. The gallows is erected in the yard north of the jail, and is en- Hae excluded from the view of persons outside by the jail building and the high wall. It is the same scaffold which was originally built for the execution of Welix, for the murder of a boy named Mundell. The sentence of Wells wax afterwards commuted, however, and the scaffold Was subsequently used forthe execution of Wvod- ward, who hung about four years ago for killing his wife. Tne Opzra.—The Bohemian Girl was pro- duced last night with iucreased effect in all the details. Miss Milner as Arline again won all hearts by her artistic rendering of her part,sing- ing with an expressiveness and purity of tone seldom excelled. Mr. Rudolphsen charmed the audience with his personation of the Grotesque Gipsey Devyils- hoof, in which character he credita bly emulates the best perfurinances of poor Seguin. The above will show that, although imposed upon,we bad just cause tocredit the story atluded to; and while we congratulate the parties on the success of their “family jest,” we do not envy them the predicament in which they have placed themselves. We cannot excuse the writer of the above letter, even; for, when he found out the trath, be should have informed us, su that we could have made the explanation, instead of having it become public through a cotemporary A PeeseNtation.—On Tuesday evening some fifty ladies and gentlemen gathered at the resi dence of R. W. Bates. Esq., No. 154 Penasylva- nia avenue, First Ward, to pay their respects to the Rev. Dr. Peck, late President of Dickenson College, who is here on the eve of his departure for a mission in California. The interest of the occasion was heightened by the presentation of a ashe tribute to Dr. P., by a few of his many friends in this city. The to- ken, consisting of a superb salt service, of silver, was presented by the Rev. Mr. Nadal, of Foundry Chapel, who made a beautif il notice of the long connection of Dr. Peck with the people of Wash- ington, as Pastor of the Foundry congregation dr. P."* reception of the present was accompa- nied by feeling and impressive remarks, in which bis allusion to the sundering of the many ties that united him to the Atlantic States brought tears to all eyes. ‘The affair was one creditable alike to Dr. Peck aad bis friends. Artempr ar Rospexy.—Last night, a party of young fellows met a man named Peyton, near the corner of Sixth street and the Avenue, and find- ing that he had money, and had been drinking, they knocked him dowa. Watchmen Roby and Goodyear being in the neighborhood, heard the man fall, and his cry for help, and ran to him. They arrested James Casey standing over Peyton with bis baad in Lis pocket Casey resisted, and tried to get a pistol out of his pocket, which the Officers took from him. While taking him tothe guacd-bouse, the officers were attacked hy a party who attempted a rescue, and they had to take their prisoner to the yuard-Louse amid a shower of stoues. Casey was committed to jail for court, by Justice Dong Peyton (the man robbed) remained in the guard-bouse during the night, and was sent to his home ina hack this morning, badly wounded. Tuk Suootine amon tHe Bovs.—Some days ago, we meationed the shooting of two small boys near Swampoodie, in the Fourth Ward, while a number of them were playing near the little branch which passes through that locality, and known by the juveniles as Blue-cork run ‘The person suxpected of committing the act was a lad, fourteen vears of aye, named Jus. Muss iN rH Sxcoxp Wanp.—Last night, the watchmen in the Second Ward were called on to make an arrest of parties concerned in fighting, near Thirteen-ai alf street and the Avenue. They performed their duty, and the parties were taken to the guard-house. After waiting a con- siderable time for the witnesses, a trial was had, and the parties held to bail for court. In such cases as these, the office:s are frequently blamed because the prisoners are dismissed. [t is not the fault of the officers. The witnesses are generally the first to find fault, when they are themselves to blame; for they fail to appear till the trial hours expire, and the Justice is obliged to dismiss the case. The residents of the Second Ward ha been but little disturbed by disorderly parties; and now that there isa tendency to disturb that quiet section, the residents should be prompt in sustaining the officerx, which will encourage them to discharge their duties. Fre- sete persons in crossing streets have been obliged to display their agility in order to es- cape being knocked down by the horses and probably seriously injured.” Common sense should teach those younz men the impropriety of fast driving where aged persons of both sexes and young cbildren are constantly passing. There is a law of the Corporation which makes fast driving an offence subject toa fine. Violators would do well to try their teas on safer tracks, and not endanger the lives of citizens and their own surplus funds. Moeppy, Quite Mevpy.—Within a quarter of a mile of the Capitol, in one of the principal thoroughfares of this Mctropolis — Four-and-a- half street—there is considerable mud. How it came there, or who’s to blame for its being there, is more than we can say; but there it is, as our sad experience can vouch for. It is not surface mud, either, but is contained in great deep holes, oy interspread throughout the breadth of the street from Pennsylvania avenue to Maryland ave- nue. It ought to be remedied, really, for it is death on horses that bave to wade through it with burthens, and destruction on wheeled vehicles that are dragged throngh it. Bustngss appeaied to be reviving throng hout the city this morning. Many wagons and other vehicles standing in the streets in the vicinity of the warehouses and factories denoted the arrival of many of our neighbors of Maryland and Vir- ginia to make purchases and iMipose of their stock. The activity of the xalesmen was called into full requisition to supply purchasers, and altogether the retail trade was brisker than it has been for some weeks. Dunlop, Fisq., will read the Declaration of Independence, G. French Bowie, Esq., deliver the oration, the Rev. Dr. Bocock address the children, and the Rev. David R. Wilson the parents and teachers. Jewett*s, formerly Pairo’s Grove, has been se- jected as the point for the celebration; and the Bridge street Presbyterian church as the point at which all the schools will assemble in the morn- ing, to form the line of Procession. It willdoubt- less be one of the most extensive and imposing celebrations of the kind which has ever occurred in our city. The following letter is from a very responsible source at Colesville, Md., dated Jiine 15th, and the circumstances narrated occurred on Saturday lest about noon, and have since been corrobo! by several respectable gentlemen who visited our city yesterday from the neighborhood in which it oceurred : ‘*Our community bas again been startled by the visitation of one of those terrible elements, awhirlwind. We first heard of its appearance in the field of Elbert Shaw, about three miles below us. It first appearance was no larger than hogshead, vising in an immense column, tow- ne as high as the eye could discern in the smoky element, and taking a northeasterly direc- tion, and spreading desolation in its progress. It passed throngh the lands of Kibert Shaw, Mid- dleton, J. T. Baker, Barrett and others. “It was indeed a sight to see the destruction it caused on the land of John Baker. During the storm be was left a houseless man and mien to the drenching rain which accompanied it. It was a scene sufficient to draw tears from the eyes to behold the wretched condition of bis pecets and SEE left without a shelter dur- ing the peltings of the storm. ‘The most incredulous part of the story however remains to be told. The roof and other portions of the dwelling, together with every tenenent at- tached to the premises, were completely demol ished—a great portion of which were taken away by the whirlwind. The roof was seen towering shoes lofty trees, dashing on in its mad career. A child of the family was taken from under the timbers of a log kitchen, and, strange to say, un- hurt. The wind rushed through the woods by the Old Federal Meeting Houne, layin; prostrate in its course trees from three to four feet in diam- eter, and which bad stood the tempests for many years. It swept away the poultry house contain- ing some fifty or sixty chickens, smoke honse with fifty pieces of bacon in it, and corn house containg three or four barrelxof cora, The bacon was spread broadcast over terra firma, and not a chicken was left to tell the fate of the rest. The neighbors turned ont en masse and assisted Baker in making himself and family as comfortable as they could under the circumstances. His fences were soon put up, yard cleaned of the rubbish, aad furniture and family removed to a friendly neighbor's. Considerable damaye was done to the crops by knocking down the wheat, washiny up the corn, &c. The damage is variously estimated at from $200 to $2,000." ALEXANDRIA. Correspondence of The Star.
