JcoxtixveD.] Such was the business character of our he- roine’s father, while in the social sphere he was esteemed a most exemplary, accomplished and companionable gentleman. Though natu- rally taciturn, he had acquired complete mas- tery over his disposition, and was ever ready to —— entertain those with whom he mingled. This facility sprang from eraftiness, and the desire to appear in public to the best possible advantage, and had not any part of its origin in sinesrity. When alone with his fam- ily the same controlling influences wero inop- ‘erative, and the natural man there exhibited itself, stripped of hypocritical screens, and standing forth in all the deformity of a petu- lant aud fractious disposition There the pent-up passions fonnd vent and overwhelmed the houschold with expressions of fastidious censure; and there his unrestrained eballitions of temper were displayed, as otten without a# with provocation. Even towards his wife he was frequently ungallant and sel- fieh, though he loved her, no doubt, more than all the world bosides, and as devotedly as his feverish heart was exsceptible of loving. He treated children with such reserve that they were literally etrangers to him, ao far, at Teast. as ng any sympathies or impulses in common. Lis servants, annoyed with habitual fault-finding and even clamorous railing, in ease they were guilty of any slight peeeadtilos, heartily despised him, and only assumed a show of respect, in order to retain their situa- tions till bettor could be secured. From ang solely the exhibition of an ~ appearance of respectability ;"’ from living a continual faleehood to the world, Mr. D.’s own moral principle was warped and perverted ; uad, hence, he was in pable of intusing any into the minds of hisehildren. On the contrary, he was tineally teaching them, by exampl. the pernicious practice of deeeption. Lis bu: ness furnished him more than sufticient em- ad ee and, therefore, he bad no time left, ad he experienced the inclination, to bestow any especial attention on those innocent de- pendents. lie cared not to have their pure af- fections entwined about his arrogant heart, al- though they might prove to it a healing balm of wonderful efficacy.’” The rapturous felicity of possessing a child's unselfish love, was a problem too profound for him to solve. and the apothegm thai-- The love of a child is the de- light of the soul,’ had neither sense nor reason in it according tu his jud su He believed he perivrwed his entire duty to- wards his family in providing them sholter, food, clothing, education, and speuding money: and, but in order that they should “appear well’’ and be a credit to him, # portion of this would probably have been omitted. He neyer Teflected that disgrace and ignominy would re- sult from their growing up destitute of those established rales of action which are the child’s safeguards against temptation, and the buoys that prevent its engu!fment in the black waters ot iniquity. Perhaps, be fancied, as many others seem to do, that these things are fp sessed intuitively, or come through revelation from some guardian spirit, and, hence, it is unnecessary that parents shall impart them. The wife of Mc. D. was a handsome, gener- ous-neartel and accomplished lady, the ab- sorbing passion of whose life was love for her hasband. His wishes were her law. and her conduct was governed entirely by his actions and desires. His pecuniary concerus were n sealed book to her, but as she lacked the exer- &Y to investigate such matters, notwithstanding their momentous importance to herself, his un- willingness to communicate anything Tespect- = was not deemed a hardship. Mrs. D. was one of those rare specimens of womankind who are never known to refuse obedience to a busband’s injunctions—living. as it were, without a mind, a mere automatic and insensate humen shape. The world praised her as a good wife and excellent woman, but we cannot think she was entitled to either com- pliment. For our part, let our good woman and wife. bea woman of thought and spirit, who hasa will of her own aud a way of her own, and cannot be shifted hither and thither as others may direct. Suppose she does con- tend wiih and contradict us, or even deal us a siap occasionally, it were better so, than to be — toad unthinking mass of flesh and ones. who would impose upon us all the intel- 1 1 Isbor F tuat her husband subjected her to mental en- slavement, and occasion never existed for that activity of mind which alone induces a Vigorous exercise of judgment. Hence, these or Mrs D., however, there was the excuze qualities were subdued, and in a little time sha, bocame incompetent to advise with and console her husband, or educate and train her chi!- dren. There can be no doubt that she loved the latter, but perceiving that all their physical wants were amply provided for. was fain to conclu le that she had discharged her duty towards them by bringing them into the world. She had not time to impart to them any of those lessons which are only to be learned through a mother's tuition; or, if she had, her time was pre-occupied in the accom- lishment of some task imposed by her hue- and, or in indulgence in fashionable pleasure She was always kind to them, however, fre- quently caressing them, and ified almost every wish they uttered The children of this uncxemplary couple were Henry, Ellen and William, who, at the date of our firs) memorandum were aged re- aaah about nineteen, fifteen, and twelve. hey had been reared by nurses, sewing-girls, school-teachers, and professors of dancing, mu- sic, and French. Whatever of morality and rectitude they possessed was gathered at ran- dom from associates, instead of being derived from its appropriate source—their parents. It is nly with Ellen's history we have any pres- ent business, yet, that it may be more readily understood. we will crasuatly glance at that of her oldest brother This youth was endowed with excellent ea. pacities, but being cast into the midst of life without that stamina which controls folly and keeps evil in subjection, his mind naturally ab- sorbed those elements most obviously predomi- pact in society ; and which, unfortunately, are of the baser surt, tending only to degrade. Hence, it was hardly to be expected that he would sesk high-minded and honorable com- panions, or endeavor to occupy an elevated so- cial ition. Selfishness, of that description which Gaaase within us an utter indifference about the condition of others, and induces us, with unhealthy avidity, to seek our own enjoy- ment, early became his characteristic. Those who are governed by this disposition, grow reckless concerning the weifare of their dearest friends. Pleasure becomes their religion, and selt their god; and we once knew a devout worshipper at the shrine, who left the bedside of his dying wife to gratify bis unholy passion by attending a public festival. Such beings are incarnations of man’s greatest folly, and sach was Henry, although but a youth. To ertain the most rational method of en t required labor, and as he was not wiil- ing to undergo this, he madly plunged into such viciousness as presented itself. Ilis education was limited and guperficial. on »unt of his being too indolent to toil through the dradgery of learning; and his conduct would create the impression that he believed some guardian power had trimmed the and lashed the helm of his F he's barque, and it only remained for him to let it float smoothly down the siream of life and tukewdvantage of whatever might transpire to contribute ty his entcrtalnwe Among Henry's comrade: was one Herbert Lawrence.
