(North American and United States (iazeties Prayer Barners e Buddhists have a queer mode of facilitating devotional exercises A thick board is made, composed of innumerable sheets of paper pasted together, and upon which: are written in Thibetian characters the most re- puted prayers. ‘Phis board is placed in a barrel and turue4 on anaxle. Those devotees who have not the zeal or the taste to pray vocally, have re - course to the sit®ple and expeditious medium of the prayer barrel. AH they have to do fs to set the barrel in motion; it them turns of itself for a long time, the devotees drinking, eating or sleep= ing, while the complacent niethanism is grind- ing out prayers for them. Of course they can pray by water or steam. We late"y heard of a housemaid who, aboot ye aa a family re*her unexpectedly, and arged to give a reason for it, s#mply said, “I can’tstay, the young ladies speak soeh bad grammar."’ {xg There is a man in Cinc‘anati who has four short fingers on each hand, reae¥ing about to the first joint of a finger of usual length;and the Ga- zette says that this physical deformity of the band can be traced back through various mem- bers of his family for a period of one hundred and eighty years! {> Francis Briggs, of Windsor, Mass , has been sent to jail in default of $2,000 bonds, to be tried for brutally beating his half sister, a little girl of ten years, who was bound to him by the overseer of the poor in Savoy, three years since. The person of the girl was partially exposed at the examination, and it was a sight that almost beggars description. a A man noted for impeturbability and a scolding wife was stopped in the woods one night by a pretended ghost. He only said : “fean't stop, friend ; if yon area man [ must request you to get out of the way and let me go by, if you are the devil, come along and take supper with me—I married your sister.” IL A story is told ofa chap at Napoleon, Ar- kansas, who was drinking at a counter and with- al being tolerably tight, after several ineffectual attempts to raise the glass to his lips, succeeded in getting it high enough to pour the contents down bis shirt collar, set the glass down with the exclamation ‘that’s good, but a little too much ice, Mr. Barkeeper.”’ UP? A letter in the Salem Register from St. Louis, says: ‘Those young men who give up a certainty in the East, with the hope of improving their condition inthe West, bad better stick to the foreplane and plow-handle in New England; or, if they do come West, must come prepared to shove the one or hold the other; for clerks and speculators are here already in droves, and must either starve or go farming.” U7 For the last year or two there has been a deficiency in the supply of Chinese fire crackers owing to the rebellion in China. The consequence has been a great advance in the price of those in- dispensable articles for the Fourth of July: but this — there is likely to be such an abundance, that the prices must come down. From July 1, 3967, to Feb. 97, 1858, there were shipped from Hong Kong to the United States 140,361 boxes of fire crackers, against 42,973 in the previoun year, and £5,320 in the year before that.
