AMERICAN MepicaL Assoctarion.—After the closing of our yesterday's report, the resolutions accepting the apologies of Drs. Reese and Bryan were reconsidered and referred—after considera- bie debate and much excitement—to the commit- tee of the whole, Dr. Edwards occupying the chair. A memorial from the Philadelphia county Medical Society, giving a detailed account of the McClintock case was read McClintock, it aj pears, had been expelled from the association for selling quack nostrums, after which Drs. Reese and Bryan had viven certificates of his fitness for the charye of Blockley Hospital, Philadelphia. After the adoption or arule limiting all speech- es, save Dr. Reese’s reply to the memorial, to five minutes— Dr Reese said the apology offered yesterday was the fruit of what be understood to be an ar- rangement between certain of bis friends and the gentlemen having charge of this memorial [fhis was pronounced false] He had signed the paper recommending Dr. McClintock with- ent thought, and because of the necessitons con- dition of Dr| Me€.'s family The idea that be whose whole life had been a crusad ainst nos- trams and quacks, he who bud even broken off friendship with McClintock because of hi nexion with the matter, being tn any way com- promised with nostrum vending. needs d nothing more to confate it (han that he should mention it in the presence of this assembly where he was known. {Applause | He had gone as far in apology as Lis friends thought proper, and was willing to yo as far as an was perfectly piain that le had been misled, be- « the action as now taken placed him in the position of introducing the matter He left it to the mevting to judge how far the contract bad been fulfilled by the other side A motion to refer the matter to a committee of seven baving been made by Dr. Attinson, it was opposed by Dr. A’ Lee, of Penna., who said tbat upon the action of the Association in this case depended the continuance of many of its mem- bers in connection with it Dr. Payne, of Va_, told, in illustration, of two Virgintans—a storekeeper and a lawyer—both of them Quakers and members of a temperance so- ciety. Tue lawyer would take a little on the aly and when, on one oceasion the storekeeper had iven a poor fellow a glass of brandy, and was ronght up to be censured for it by the society, the lawyer did theeensuring. Kousing himselfto his full height, and looking at the culprit before Lim, bis censure ran thus: ‘‘Jeems, thee should be more circumspect."? Dr. Payne ‘thought Dr. Reese should be more circumspect, and that his ap logy should be accepted. Dr. Contie, of Pa , wished to make a statement; but was interrnpted by Dr. Bowling, of Tenn . who made an explanation of why he induced Dr Reese to make the apology. He said that certain gentlemen from Philadelphia had told him that if the Dr. made that apology the subject would be dropped The debate was continued very warmly be- tween Drs. Contie, Cox, La Roche, Payne Jewel!, Davis, and others ; at its conclus De. ology, when the committee Reese cffered an a tose and reported his apology satisfactory, and recommended its acceptance by the Association Dr. Lindsley, President, resumed the Chair, and the report was adopted Dr. Reese then read an apology, which was declared by some members insufficient, because it did not coutain the word * regret.” For awhile De. R_ refused to insert it, and much con- fusion ensued. At length the matter was settled by the unanimous accept: of the following apology, in which Dr. Bryan joined Dr. Reese. “The undersigned regrets that he certified to the professional! qualiticatiuns for Blockley Hos- pital, Philadelphia, of an expelled member of this body; and hereby offers this apology for his departure from the ethical code.” The chair announced that the Pennsylvania, the Wilmington and Manchester, the Iilinois Central, the Richmond and Petersburg, and the =. C. Northeast Railroad Companies would ouly charge fare for delegates one way And at fifteen minutes to four o’clock the As- scciation adjourned until this morning. THIRD DAY.
