The curious among our readers will be inter- ested in the perusal of the following notices of this superstition, as it now exists. An old panish paper, from which we translate them, introduces them with the trite remark that * the love of the marvelous has invented many extravagances."’ To which it may be added with equal shrewdness that ‘‘ Vampirism”’ is the maddest extravagance of them ali. Fear, the cruelist of the passions, has not a more baggard minister than this revolting super- stition. We translate: In Llyria, in Poland, in Hungary, in Tur- key, and even in some parts of Germany, who- ever would publiely deny the existence of Vampires, would be taken for a very immoral and irretigious person. Vampire (or vudhad- /a4. in the Illyrie dialect.) is the name civen to the dead who leave their graves by night, to suck the blood of the living. Those who die by the hands of a Vampire are likewise con- verted into Vempires, as soon as they cease to exist; and these are despoiled of all generous feeling, for they prefer to torment their kindred and friends rather than strangers. Some be- lieve that the Vampire is a Divine judgment, and others that it is a fatality. The most ac- eredited opinion is that schismaties and her- etics being abie to find no rest in their graves, revenge the pangs they suffer upon the living. The signs of Vampirism are: The preservation of the corpse from decay. The fluidity of the blood, and the elasticity of the members. It is said that vampires have their eyes opened in side of their tombs. and that their hair end nails eee a3 if they were alive. Some are known y the noise they make in their graves, gnaw- ing everything about them, and sometimcseven their own bodies. The apparitions of these phantasms cease when the body having been exhumed is di- vided from the head and burned. The best means of freeing oneself from a vampire. is to anoint the body, and particularly the part which it has attacked, with the blood from its veins, mixed with earth from the tomb of the Vampire The wounds are known by a small rosette, blue or red, like the sear left by the leech. The following are stories of vampires : In the beginning of the month of September. in the year . there died in the village of Kisilavia, three leagues from Gradiseh, an old man of sixty-two yea Three days after his burial, be presented himself before hi asked him for food. The same day, five or six person}! sick very suddenly, and died in a few hours The bailiff having learned what had vecurrad, gave information to the tribunal of Belgrade, who sent two civil officers with the public heads- man, to investigate the affair. The imperial otlicer went to Gradiseh, to be witness of a deed ot which he bad so frequently heard. The tombs of all persons who had died during the month past, were opened. When they came to that of the old man, he was found with hiseyes open and his face flushed. and breathing nat- urally, but nevertheless immovable as acorpse. ‘The executioner pierced the heart with his sword. A pyre wa: immediately formed. and the body having been quartered, was cast upon it. After this, no signs of vampirism were found on the bodies of the son or ot the neigh- bors. Several years since, an inhabitant of Med- riga, named Paul Arnold, was crushed to death Leneath the wheels of a wagon. Thirty days utter his death, four persons died, who it was said by the other citizeus, were victims of the vampires. Rumor went that Arnold had been tormented by a Turkish vampire in the vicia- ity of Casowa, on the frontier of Servia. and that he had tried to cure himself by a ting his body with earth taken from tue vampires gtave, 2 precaution that availed him 1 thing, being himselt eoaverted »a@vampire at his death. It is believed that those who in life have beee passive vampires, bevome active vampires w dead Ue was disiuterred forty days after hi and all the indications of an arch-vampire were discovered in iu. His body was as sound as in life; his hair his nail and beard bad grown in the tomb, and his veins contained # san- guinary tlaid that ci ted throughout his duaji, before whom the ex- humation tuck pla #“ man learned in vam- pirism, ordered the heart of the defunct Arnold tw be pierced. A loud ery followed the stab as if from a living wan. This done, the body was beheaded and burned. The same operation was performed upon the other victims of vam pirism, that they might not be able to torment others. Nevertheless this did not suffice to extinguish them. In the short space of three months sev- enteen persons of various ages diel, some sud- denly, sume after two or three days of suffering It ix related that among these. one Stanoska, daughter of the Hungarian, Jotiietgo, having wetired in perfect health, awoke in terror at midnight, shrieking frightfully, and erying out that the son of the fungarian Millo, bad tried to strangle her while sue siept. From that in- stant she sickened. und finally died at the end of three days. The body of the son of Milio being exumined, it was found that he had real- ty been converted iutoa vampire. The prin- cipal citizens, the physici ud the surgeons applied themselves t ness of ascertain- ing the reason why vampirism had reappeared after so many ye. After some days, a considerable investigation, it was ¢ that the defunct Paul Arnold had } only four persons. but many animals, which had served az food for the new vampires, among whom was the son of Mi In con: «quence st was determ to burn all the bodies at the end of # certain Among sou rty, sev- snteem e fuund wi pirism. I had better have said nothing of the kind; for the father replied bitterly, aad the danghter began to shed tears, reiterating ceaselessly: “ Woe's me! to die so young—so young!’’ The mother heaped reproaches upon me, calling me infidel, incredulous, impious, and declaring that she had recognized Wieznany. Seeing this blind obstinacy, I concluded to hold my peace All the amulets im the house were bung abeut the neck of Khava. Her father swore that he would go next day to disinter Wieznany, and burn him in the presence of bis kindred _ At the break of day, the whole city was put in commotion. The men went armed with guns and sickles, the women carried red hot irons, and the children sticks and stones. In this manner they approached the cemetery with loud and furious cries. The exhumation oveupied considerable time As all wished to take part in the vengeance, innumerable quarrels sprang up, which would have had an evil end, had not the old men in- terfered, and declared that two men only should disinter the corpse. The moment the cloth which covered the body was remoy ed, a sharp, horrible ery raised the hair upon my head. This cry had proceeded from a woman at my side. “Itisavampiro!"’ she exclaimed, and a thousand voices echoed the words. Almost at the same moment, twenty or thirty shots were fired, tearing the head to pieces.” The father and kinsman of Kkava quartered the body with sharp knives. and the women caught the red- dish liquor that flowed from it, to anoint the neck of the tormented. Several youths took the body from the sepul- chre, after having literally riddled it, taking the precaution to tie it to the trunk of a tree. which they had cut down for the purpose. Fol- lowed by all the boys of the place, they bore it to a field before the house of Vaglonavich, where a pyre composed of sticks and straw had been prepared. When it was lighted, they commenced to dance around it, accompanying themselves with savage yells. Thestench that | the corpse exhaled, obliged me to retire to my inn. Then she took an amulet from her neck and said to me: “ Keep it; [ think that it will be more useful to thee than me!’ These sad ceremonies ended, she re ceived the holy sacrament with devotion.
