SPiKIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Intelligencer of this morning hasa letter from Dr. May, giving an interesting account of the last hours of Col. Benton and of the nature and progress of the painful malady which ter- minated his life. This disease, it seems, was cancer of the rectum. Dr. May, after mention- ing the perfect calmness and resignation with which Col. B. received the intelligence of his approaching dissolution, says: “* | ascertained that in the intervals of my visits to him at this time he repeatedly went to bis work and corrected the proof-sheets, which he was in the habit of receiviny at short periods from bis publisher, Mr. Appleton; and I recollect on one occasion, when! did not suppose he could stand, he suddenly arose from his bed, and, in face of all remonstrance, walked to his table at some distance off, and correctedband finished the conclusion of another work on which he was en- waged and of which he hed shortly before re- seived the proofs from New York. His uncon- uerable will enabled bim to do it; but, when lone, he was so exhausted | had to take the pen from bis hand to give it the direction. “* As soon as he recovered from the immedi ate danger of this attack he labored, as he had done for years before, constantly at his task. Rising by daylight, and writing incessantly with the exception of the hour be usually devoted to lis afternoon ride on his horse, the ellect of which though I feared from the position of his disease, be yet seemed to think was of benefit to him. “ Andat this labor he continued from day to day until within about a week before his death, when no longer able to rise from weakness he wrote in his bed, and when no longer able tu do that dictated his views to others ‘** Tbus it may be traly said of him he literally « died in harness,” battling steadily from day to day with the most formidable maiady that afilicts humanity ; his intellect unclouded and his iron ‘will sustaining him in the execution of his great national work almost to the last moment of his existence.’’ The Union is devoted mainly to the discus- sion of Kansas matters. ~- ee IG. Aw Eptrertar Cuance—Thurlow Weed, Esq., has resumed the editorial conduct of the Albany Evening Journal, Mr. Samuel W ilkeson, {the gentleman to whom be sold in 1*35) being compelled, by iil health, to retire from the edi- torial profession We ditfer toto calo from Mr. Weed in polities, yet we recognize in him a man of commanding talents and sagacity equal to that of perhaps any other person, at thi« time, on the tripod of the American newspaper press. The renewal of Lis connection with the Albany Evening Journal will, therefore, probably very soon place that paper at the Lead of the army of Republican par- ty presses 177 Capt. Brown, of the ship Black Prince, of Boston, (previously announced as having put into Rio on the 27th of February,) writes to the owners that when (he vessel was 13 days out, in consequence of some ditticulty, he ordered one of the men to be put in irons. ‘The man on nearing this drew bis knife from his belt and stabbed Capt. B. in two places. The would-be-assasin, with others, however, was eventually put in irons, but it being soon after dixcovered that a concerted plan to make further trouble was on foot, Capt. Brown made for Rio with al! possible dispatch, and landed seven of the mutineers at that port. The ship then left for home on the 3d of March. Capt. Brown, though wounded severely, is not considered in a dangerous con- dition.
