Correspondence of The Star; © Grorextows, April 20, 1858. We have rarely known so great a demand for small and medinm sized houses in our city as exists at the present time. We have no doubt that fifty or more of this class of dwellings, sit- uated in pleasant localities, would soon be occu- d by good tenants paying remunerative rents. ope Sag i icy tor one buildi: causes us to wonder why our men of means. have not invested their surplus funds in this way instead of risking them in such decidedly less seeure speculations as stocks, Western lands, small po- tato banks, &c. The north and northwestern por- tion of the Town abounds with handsome build- ing lots in an unimproved condition; most of them situated in the most eligible and healthy locations, and surrounded by everything neces- sary to render them desirable for acom- fortable and quiet place for private families to re- side. Much of this property can, we learn, be purchased at very moderate prices, and if our own capitalists negleet the riunity much longer, we hope to see capitalists from elsewhere avail themselves of this, an undoubted a- nity fora safe, permanent and profitable invest- t ment. A petition, gotten up in your city, praying Congress or some other ly to reorganize the Criminal Court of the District, is being circu- lated in our city for signatures. Wonder if it is not the offspring of some opponents of the Re- vised Code? * The business facilities of our neighboring city, Alexdndria, have taken captive one of our former citizens, Mr. Lewis Arny, who has located him- self there for the purpose of conducting a branch of the well known and popular establishment of Arny & Shion, of ourcity. (See advertisement ) We have known Mr. A. long and intimately, and if our neighbors will take the advice of an out- sider they will not be sparing in their efforts to retain him in their midst. Asa business man and citizen we have always found him to be pos- sesstd@ of many sterling good qualities, just such as are likely to meet the peculiar views of the people of the Old Domini6n. Business upon the canal continues on the in- crease. The neighborhood of the coal docks, this morning, is literally thronged with boats from Cumberland, laden with coal. ‘The weather continu tremely gloomy, and attended with a thick mist of rain! “No out-door business of moment is being done. Since the late refreshing rains, we begin to re- ceive the most encouraging reports from the growing grain and vegetable crops. The pros- pect foran abundant yield, we learn, was never better at this season than itisat the present time.
