LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Notice To Apvertisrxs.—To secure the most conspicuous positions for advertisements in Tae Srar they must be sent to our office as early in the day 2s possible. Lutts, was brought inte court by Deputy Marshal Phillips and attendinz officers Shortly after being placed in the dock— The Judge caused the prisoner to stand up, and said: “James Powers, have you anything to say why the sentence of the law nbould wet pro- nounced upon you, for the crime of which you beve been convicted?”* ‘fo which the prisoner replied—“ Nothing sir, except that i have not had a fair trial. I was burried into jt without due preparation.’ The Judge then said: You have been convicted of thehigherime of murder The circumstances attending the perpetration of this offence against the laws of God and your country are few and simple. You were tried by jury above excep- tion, by your own admission, and you were for- tunate enough to have the services of counsel who displayed great ability and zeal in the con- duet of your defence. To such a jury and the aid of counsel you were entitled; but the evidence was so clearfand con- clusive as to lead the mind with irresistible force to the conviction of your guilt The threats which it was proved you made against the deceased as lateas the Saturday night before his death, which you attempted to an- swer by a reconcilfaticn between you. That your sul nent conduct showed to be feigned on your part would have been,in connection with the shooting bins, sufficient to warrant the ver- dict of the jary Bat independent of those menaces, the fact of your using a deadly weapon upon him without the slight: s! provocation, not evena woid having been exchanyed between you at the time, and his death of the wound inflicted by the pistol shot, constitute the crime of which you bave been convicted i will not eo into any det nor dwell 1 < of the evidence, » of the i nin whieh you now stand is traceable to the low d-inking hones you trequented, in ove of which you towk the life of Ed. Editor: I read the article of a ‘Subscriber!’ in your issue of the ist inst. With reference to the supposition of my riding a horse “accus- tomed to shy,"’ my knowledge of him would en- able me to judge when to spur him ahexd and when to check bim to the rear of “pi dere omecoes if the application of the spur and the horse well held failed to prevent contact, which I think it would, or could, or should do. I deny that the off side affords the ‘: best opportunity to render assistance, and that a lady properly seated on her saddle looks fairly fn front as alleged by ‘Sub- scriber;"’ on the contrary, in conversing with a companion at ber right band the position is strained and inconvenient. I am amused in read- ing in the beginning of the article that the near side is wrong for the gentleman to be on, because he is liable to come into violent contact with the lady, und in the conclusion that the off side is the most proper, as it will permit him to come closest to her. fam aware that on horseback either side is optional with riders as to meetiny vehicles, and supposed that as the law in England requires persons meeting to turn to the left, that might be there areason for gentlemen to ride on the off side. Ina carriage the fashion is fora gentle- man riding with a lady, unless he is driv ng, to place ber at his right hand. So in entering a room, or handing a lady to dinner, the gentle- man yields her the post of honor ‘at his right hand. All of which being admitted, it follows that that 1s the proper position in riding on horseback, unless the inexperience of the gentle- man and his want of skill are likely to themselves, to avoid which he takes refuge on the off side” As to courting a lady, and partici- pating inthe luxusy implied in the expressive silence of his ‘ahem! the near side is, in my opinion, preferable, as there is no possibility in the ecstacy imagined of the lady loxing ber bal- ance or dislocating her neck, and when the acquaintanceship is but begun, and the gentle- inan doubtful of the prospect of hope becoming fruition, be can press ber uccasionally, all by ac- cident, and judge by its reception somewhat of his chances, and if he encounter a frown, charge itto bis horse. These are a few of the reasons, Mr Editor, which will, 1 bope, induce your “*Subseriber’’ to subseribe to my side of the question, and in the hope that erescive know!- edge of spnr and rein may enable him to take the side aforesaid “when he next goes out to tide,”’ I remain A Constant Reaper.
