EVENING STAR. APRIL MEMORIES. The lilac leaves put forth anew, ne eprim e's early pledges, The young grass wears its greenest hue eneath the eaves’ broad ledges. The birds flock back to Northern bowers And fill the air with singing— The harbingers of early flowrrs Un sunoy hill-sides springing. Afar upon the breezy hills, The soft, blue mint oping, nd lo! the unfettered glancing rills To melody are leaping. ‘The biand pure air of spring, replete With many a sound of ¢ adness, Brings bsok a yearnine deep and sweet, But most akin to sadness The old-time memories come again Like ircense round me wreathing— The dropping of the early rain, ne odurous Zephyrs breathing ; The consciousness of solitude W hich strangely seems to cheer me, On which no other inght intrude, Though ali the world were near ms. 1 wander down the lonely lane Kudeared by memories haliowed, The | serps kreets my eyes again W hich time has only meilowed, The winding foot: ath is the same, So still and wild and lonely ; Al! things some old remembrance claim, he change is with me only. Glad spring-time, waked to life once more, Oh. in thy resurrection Would that thou couldat again restore The dead hopes of affection; Give back the nobie heart, wild wave, Beuesth the surges sleeping, Or ih ive to sorrowing hearts, dark grave, he treasures thou art keeping. ol O’er pl Op vps that smile with life again, rom far-off uplands cailing!
