Tue Merertnc at Temperance Hatr.—a large gathering was assembled at Temperance Hall, last night, among whom were many prom- inent citizens, the meeting having been called for the purpose of carrying out the measures adopted by the City Councils on last Monday night, relative to the peace of the city. The venerable W. W. Seaton was unanimous- ly called to the Chair, and John S. Hollingshead and John A. Linton, Esqs., were elected Vice Presidents. Samuel Cole, Fsq., was elected Se- eretary. Col. Seaton, in taking the chair, made a few introductory remarks, stating the object which called the citizens together, and announcing his Willingness to co-operate with them to the at- most of his ability, in order to restore the city to @ state of quietness. As it was now, our citizens Were in danger of being shot while walking the streets attending to their business, and without any provocation. In the present absence of (ea manent means of keeping down the prevailing rowdy spirit, be was ready to assist in such tem- porary measures as might by them be adopted for the furtherance of the 9: work A Mc. Inthe temporary ab- sence of Mr. Walter S. This opinion is favorable to the legi - imacy of the new Board elected on the Isth ul under a bye-law of the stockholders autioriz € any number of stockholders representing stoc to the amount of $250,000 to call a general ing; and that it is always a competent for a yen- eral meeting of the stockhold-rs to change the directory ‘he Board determined to act aceord- ing to Mr. Marbury’s opinion, and proceeded to the election of subordinate officers, as follows : Jobn G. Presentation To Cor. Berget.—Last night about ten o'clock, and after the accounts of the City Post Office bad been made up ready to be transferred to the uew Posjmaster, an interesting ceremony took place at that office. Col. Berret, in some exceedingly appropriate and handsomely conceived remarks, took leave of the clerks, alluding to the pleasant character of their intercourse, and concluded by expressing his hearty wishes for their future prosperity Mr. Lambert Tree, in bebalf of the employees of the office, then banded to Col. Berret a letter, signed by all the clerks, presenting him with a handsome service of plate of some $1, value; each piece of which bore the following inscrip- tion “Presented to Col. James G. Berret, by the clerks and others connected with the City Post Office, as a token of their respect for his worth as ® public officer, and of their affection for him asa man “Washington city, D. C., March 17, 1855." It was an appropriate testimonial to an officer who bas won the regard and respect of the com- munity by his etfftient performance of his official daties and the a improvements he bas insti- tated for the convenience of the citizens and those having business at the city post office. At B o’clock to-day Dr. Jones was formally installed as postmaster, and his well-known energy gives assurance that the public will con- nue to be as well secommodated as under Col Beriet’s administration, which is all that need be asked Max’s InnUMaxity ToO—WomaNn.—Last night @ message Was sent to the Central Guard-house asking for an officer to arrest a young woman who was behaving in a manner to create annoy- ance. She was arrested and brought up b-fore Captain Mills, to whom she told a story that ex- eited the sympathy of all present. She had been srdneed by a young man under solemn promise of marriage, but which promise he had for two years evaded fulfliling under various pretexts Last night she learned that he was about to be married to another. Half-crazed she hastened in quest of him, clung at desperate risk to life and tin to the carriage in which he was seated, and endeavored by wild prayers and expostulations to prevent the marriage tn consequence of the disturbance created upon the street it was thought advisable to have her arrested and taken to the guard-house, as above stated. The creature, who seemed heart- broken, said she wished to live no longer. Capt. Mills sent her home to her infant on the Promise of ber family that she should be prevented from barming herself or herchild. Her name is Mary Baker. We commend the beartless scoundrel, her se- «lucer, to the fervent prayers of the revivalists, for he is at present rather a prominent candidate for the hotest corner of the country that isn’t laid down on the map. ‘Tue Present week is an important one in both the Catbolie and Jewish churches. It is the Holy Week—the last week of Lent to the former de- nomination—dating from the past Sabbath, styled Palm Sunday in commemoration of Christ’s tri- umphal entry jfto Jerusalem. With the Jews, the Passover, or feast of un- leavened bread, commenced on Tuesday and con- tinues to the 6th of April, and ix the most holy festival of that Church. Its observance is obliga- tory, and for seven days only unieavened bread is allowed to be used, and a total abstinence from malt beverages and spirits is compelled, During the first and last two days of the Passover, no work is done by the Jews. Ceytae Marxer—This morning « plentifel supply of prevision was offered in the sheds and at the stands. The attendance of dealers from Maryland and Virginia was large, considering the season. Inthe fish market the supply was ample. Large rock were seting for $1 to #3 «ach; shad 37350 cents per pair; bunch rock, 25 cents; herring, 25 cents. In the hay market the supply was equal to the the prices rang- ing from 75 cents to $1 per cwt. The prices at the vegetable stands have not been materially changed in the past week. Tux Rivex.—We have no accounts from the fisheries this morning. At Riley’s wharf—Arrived schnr. Mr. Editor: | observed in your paper of yes- |! terday a brief dissertation upon equestrianism, | the objeet of which appeared to be to again moot & point which I did suppose had been long since settied In the artiele referred to the author, who signs himself “A Constant Reader,”’ calls upon the gentlemen of Washington to their reasons for occupying so persistently a - tion upon the right of the lady with whom they orie riding. ing myself in the habit of frequently riding in commune with ladies, and fearing that no one may feel called upon to teke up the glove which I deem to have been fairly thrown by “ A Con- stant Reader,” | beg of you, sir, to give this an insertion, that I at least may have the sati = tion of feeling that if 1 am condemned it has not been without a hearing. In the tirst place, | would say to “ A Constant Reader,”’ suppose you are compelled to ridea horse that is aceastomed to shy, and while oecn- pying your favorite ition with regard to the lady, (yelept in equine parlance the near side,) our horse is startled by something on his left, es immediately dashes Limself with violence against the lady, and if, as most horses do, he happen to rear at the same time, ten chances to one be will entangle his feet in her skirt. Again, suppose, in a narrow way, a bridge for instance, or a deep cut in the road, you meet a vehicle, the rule is to ‘‘ keep to the right as the law directs,”” this, according to my theory will bring the lady next to the vehicle should you adhere strictly to this rule; but don’t you faow, Mr. «¢ Constant Reader, that this law appliex only to vehicles meeting each other, and that persons on horse- back may choose which side they will pass; and if an Individual chooses or chances to ride bis horse against a carriage or wagon and thereby injure him, be can only blame himself; he bas no redress at law Again, suppose that from any cause a lady should be about to faint, and it does not require a very vivid imagination to conceive such a thing—a corpse on the roadside, sudden illness, an accident happenieg to one of the party, or anything of a like nature, does not the off-side afford, by far, the best opportunity to render as- sistance. I remember discussing this question once with a friend in the country, and to illus- trate the thing fully we ordered’a couple of horses—one with a side saddle, and he acted the part of a lady; and I found that while occupying # position on the oft-side 1 conld, without diffi- culty, remove him from bis horse on to mine, he ly passive, but wh ing the other side the thing was far n cult. Then, too, suppose a lady is rath rider, and you desire to control ber horse for her. Why, surely none will deny that the off-side af- fords the best opportunity either to have a single rein of her horse continually in your hand, orto occasionally take hold of the reins with which she is riding. Now, as to which side affords the greatest fa- cilities for conversation, in my opinion, the off or right side does, beyond’ the possibility of a per- adventure. A lady, who is properly seated oa her saddle, looks fairly in front, just as much so as does a gentleman; and then, of course, the side that will permit you to come closest to her is the most desirable. Now, I'll just ask you, “Mr. Constant Reader,’ did you ever court a lady, while riding on horseback with her? Did you ever propose to one under such circumstances? —— You never did! weil, if 1 must tell it, I have; and I think I know which side is the best to be on when you would seal a happy affirma- tive with—ahem! [ tell you, sir, to be riding on the off or right side of a lovely girl (your horses being quict and well-trained) x in my estima- tion, as good a place as being in a buggy with her, where you have the safety of both entirely in your own hands; while riding on the other i a hack, she on the back seat ross old aunt and a lynx-eyed mamma occupying the other two seats. 1 might say much more on this subject, Mr. Editor, but fear that I have already occupied as much space as you can afford toa Scsscripex. April. bas dawned upon us rather cool, gloomy and dry. Vegetation, as yet, shows but few signs of the return of spring. This is owing, in "part, doubtless, to the extraordinary drought for the season now Ly ee ', which, together with the chilly north and a winds, which have aa ed most of the time for several weeks, has Ppt vegetation back considerably bebind the usual time. From indications this morning we have strong hope that the drought will soon be terminated 1 by refreshing showers of rain to mois- ture the ground, and cause the buds, grass, flow- ers, &c., to put forth and cover the earth with its usual spring mantle, Our city, we are py to say, is, and has been for some time, dec’ ly more quiet and free from everything like broils or fights, indeed, dis- orders of every kind than we have known it to be for many years. A sort of gentle fraternal feel- ing seems to pervade almost the entire commu- nity. We have sometimes feared that the rowdy contagion which has so grievously afflicted some of our neighbers might reach A mixing in among all classes of our citizens, the general ub- horrence we find among them to such pro- ceedings, bas satisfied us that our fears were un- found Rowdyism would meet with but little favor im our city at this time; every man who loves his home, seems ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with his neighbor to crush it out, if it shall show ijself among us. We learn from persons from the lower river this morning that the prospects for anything like a profitable spring fishery are rather discourag- ing. The coolness of the weather, together with theextreme clearness of the water in the river, has a tendency to keep the fish back—to prevent them coming into shoal water. Enormous quan- tities of alewives, or, as they are commonly called on our river, bug fish, have been taken al- ready at some of the lower landings. These rarely ever make their appearance in very large numbers until about the close of the fishing s-a- son, and their appearance is generally regarded by old fishermen as an indication that the glut of herrings is pretty well ov'r. A few shad and herrings are coming up and are selling at $14 per hundred for the former and $15 per thousand for the latter. Arrived, packet schooners Statesman, Wicks, New York, to the Messrs.
