LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. LawLessyess Rawpant'—Satoiday night, the lawless gangs now organized in this city were out in full torce. armed to the teeth, and for want of opportunities to come in contact with each other, they attacked harmless, Snoffensive persons, with- out regard to aye, sex or color. firing their guns and pistols at dwellings c.. &e. _ In the vicinity of Judge Douglas's residence and Wendell’s printing office, at 11 o'clock, a gang formed and atta: ked dwellings and persons, fortunately doing no material damage. Another vang formed near the fire on ‘Third st , and ordered citizens. who were going thither to assist, fo turn back. One young man, named Lewis Keck was ordered back; he started to rau, when a shot was fired at him, the ball passing throngh his coat sleeve. Another, who ran down with a bucket, was ordered away, and not movin so rapidly as the rowdies wished, one of them stepped out and presented a pistol, and to give an earnest of their villanous purposes, fired the ball between his feet’ The Metropolitan Hook and J.adder arrived near the fire with their apparatus, and were ordered to halt and go back, and they had to comply About half past 11 o'clock on thesame night, as Mr. Reeve Lew ter armorer at the Arsenal, and Mr. Isaae Katwisle, who is engaged in the beating department of the Capitol extension, were passing the corner of North A st. and First street West, they were suddenly assailed, without a word of warning, by two assassins. Lewis was knocked down and shot in the thigh, the ball entering some four Inches, where it still remains; Entwisie received three balls upon bis person— the first striking the ribs over the region of the beart, and providentially glancing from the bone The other two balls entered the Lip, where they yet remain. and he is considered to be in a most critical condition The Capitol police, hearing the cries of Messrs. Entwistie aud Lewis, went to their aid and as- sisted them to their homes. This murderous assault upon two sober, quiet eitizens, has created much feeling among the res- idents upon Capitol Hill, and it will be seen tbat on offered a reward of $250 for the ap- Prebension of the assassins. Last wight a number of random shote were fired. Tue Agt Convention —After the adjourn- ment of the Artists’ National Convention, held a few days in this city, the members thereof par- took of a handsome entertainment, prepared ex- pressly for them. Toasts and sentiments were announced and property responded to, and good feeling and conviviality generally prevailed Among the incidents which occurred was the receipt of the following letter from an admirer of art, who gave a very substantial testimonial of his regard by forwarding a quantity of choice Hungarian wines, of the -‘Orley’’ brand; for which, by the way, the writer of the letter and his partner, under the firm of Freund & Grossin- gen, 106 Water street, New York, are the sole agents for the United States. We are pleased to see that the many beautiful sites along our picturesque heigh's for private mansions, are beginning to attract considerable attention, and we anticipate seeing, during the next four years, most of the fine lots now lying in an unimproved ¢ondition, covered with first class private residences. During the last seasob, one magnificent building was erected in this lo- eality, and the foundations for another, to be erected this season, for Mr. John BE. Carter, are already being laid by Mr. Henry Wingate. The one erected last season was commenced by Mr. Carter for a residence for himself, but long before its completion, the superiority of the location, together with the unsurpassed surrounding scene- ty and unobstructed view in every direction, at- tracted the attention of a private gentleman of means, whs immediately purchased it as hisown fature residence. Many of the lots still vacant in this locality, especially that portion known as Liles Hill, certainly far surpasses, in every par- ticular, any property of the kind in the District. There is nothing necessary to constitute them desirable as locations for pleasunt and quiet re- treats for men of means wanting. Moreover, we are informed by those who know, that many of most desirable lots can be purchased at about one-sixth the cost of by far less desirable prop- erty in the District is held and selling at. The union prayer meetings continue to be very numerously attended by aif classes and newrly afl denominations of our citizens; and all who at- tend them colucide in the opinion that they are gradually working a beneficial effect upon the ublic mind by the removal of every thing like Dickerieg in regard to matters of but little im- portance, and uniting all more closely in frater- nal bonds. The meetings held at the Methodist Protestant church last week were paticiaies in both by the ministers and laity of nearly all de- nowinations, and were peculiarly interesting in their character. This week they will be held at the Dumbarton street Methodist eburch. Business upon our canal continues meat onthe increase. Several! boats from Cumberland, with coal, arrived on Saturday, and passed down to Alexandria. The following joke, which we heard of one of our citizens, is rather too good to be lost: Re- turning home rather late, a few evenings since, and finding his better-balf absent he determined to bave some fun at her expense. He accordingly eutered the house in the dark, and sent a mes- senger to inform bis wife, who was ata near res- idence, that some one was in the house. A gen- tleman who was present when the alarm was ‘iven, immediately repaired to the premises and Ending the supposed intruder ransacking the house, immediately seized a chair, and before the supposed intruder could make himself known dealt a blow upon his head, which brought him flat to the floor, it is needless to sav that he soon hallooed lustily for quarters, and at once formed the good resolution never to attempt to have any more fun at his wife’s expense. Arrived, schooners William Jobn, Miller, from Philadelphia, with coal to Dickson, Gordon & Co., and Bogue & Donnelly; Somerset, Miller, from same place, with coal to Wm. HH. Godey; Mill Boy, from Ocoquan, with flour to P. Berry. There appears to but little activity in the flour market. The article is still held at $4.50 for good canal supertine brands; extra qualities are igber. Prime qualities of red and white wheat are selling at $1 (3al 05 for the former, and $1.05 al Gs fe elatter. Corn held at 50c. The weather continues extremely dry, and very cool for the season, and many farmers are begin- ning to complain of damage to the wheat and early vegetable: Mr. Huoter brong bt up from the landing at the Long Bridge, this morning, about 100 fine shad, h were taken immediztely by the hucksters 20 per 100 GEORGETOWN ADVERTISEM'TS.
