Tue Fire Riot Last Nicut.—Scenes of dis- order are crowding upon us rather too thick to allow of much space by way of preface. Briefly then, the Northern Liberties was the scene last night of another bloody riot, in which guns and pistols were freely used, and it was no fault of the bellizerents that hundreds of people, non participants in the affair, were not murdered in their own houses. A fire broke out in Shreeves’ stable on M stree*, between 6th and 7th streets, about nine o’clock of last night. The Northern Liberties’ Fire Com- pany were first on the groand and extinguished ‘the flames. About this time, and ofter some of the members had left the scene of the fire, and others were preparing to do so, the Perseverance reel up 7th street, and were followed, about ten min- utes afterward, by a reel called the “Good W i,” having three beils attached to it. This reel was drawn by a large party of men; and, just as they arrived opposite the Northern Liberties market. a fight began. Who began it, no one seems to know, or rather one party says it was the other party, and rice rersa. Any how a great many shots were fired from pistols and muskets; some say as many as one hundred and fifty shots from all parties, who seemed to have been armed by preconcert. It is fumored that some persons were gilled outright; but, from all we can learn, the parties injured are as follows: Offcer Carter, buckshot in the left leg, seriously; —— Luckett, shot with musket ball in the left knee, dangerously; —— Steele, struck on the head with a stone; Henry Dubant, hit by four buck shot, and dangerously wounded; James Grady, shot about the groin; Dr. Perkinson, of Balti more, shot in the rim of the hat, the ball just grazing the head Two informants, who are entirely disinterested, state that the first shot was fired by the man who ‘bad hold of the lead rope of the Good Will reel, and that. almost simultaneously with that shot, the gps | shots were fired from all direc- Hons, many of them proceeding from the direc- tion of a tavern opposite the Northern Liberties market « One informant states that during the fight be saw one of the police fire several shots. Another person says that the Good-Will boys bevan the fight, by crying “Oh you Swypers!** Still another says the attack was ie by the Northern Liberty boys, who were secreted in the market house. A looker-on states that during the fight, a man who led or commanded the Good Will boys, used a bell, the sound of which was a signal of attack for his men. He stood near the reel, and at a signal from the bell which be rung, the men under him would rush up and discharge their firearms, and then fall back behind the boxes and other retiring places. One man who saw the ficht from « second story window adjacent, s'ates that to the best of his knowledge, the whole fight was a free and a fair one, and that theie ap- peared to be every evidence that the whole afisir was matured, and expected by both sides who came prepared The Good Wiil company has been known heretofore as the ‘‘ States Hose.”” Rowpyism —The night before last, some five individuals, of the rowdy class. who have “the freedom of the city,”’ drove tothe Navy Yard in 2 hack, and, stopping near the Anacostia Engine House, they hited, and, seeing a few young lads at the door of the Engine-house, they at- tacked them with pistols, firing about a dozen shots, some of which pierced the doors of the house, and placed the assailed party in immi- nent danger; luckily no one was hurt. This oc- curred about the time the first alarm of fire was given on that night; and the boys who were at- tacked by this crowd were not members of any fire organization, having been drawn to the spot merety from curiosity. Finding themselves thus unexpectedly assailed, they retorted in such a manner as to put the cowardly fellows to flight in a few moments; for, finding themselves met so warmly, they retreated to their carriage, which drove rapidly back toward the city. Lxcexptakism —About balf past three o’clock this morning a fire broke ont in the stable and ont houses attached toa brick building on Vir- inia avenne, between Four-and-a-halfand Third streets, and the progress of the flames was not arrested until the onthouses were eu ly de- Te and the building itself materiaily dam- ag! The property belonged to George Mat- tingly, Esq , and was considerably damaged. We were unable to ascertain whether it was in- sured. It was occupied as a store and dwelling by Mr. P. Brennan, whose furniture and goods were injured to the extent of about 3700. We are told that his policy of insurance expired yes- terday. In the stable were three horses belong- ing to Mr. Brennan. two of whom were burned to death, and the otber injured so badly that it will not probably live. The fire was undoubt- edly the work of an incendiary. Waskincton TueatTxe.—Brougham “ turned up’ again unexpectedly last night as ‘‘ Micaw- ber,”? the play of David Copperfield having been substituted for Dombey & Son. The audience, we may add. were not at all grieved by the ex- change To-night Mr. Brougham takes his benefit and naturally ‘puts bis best foot forward.’ The bill 1s, indeed, a tempting one, consisting of three pieces: first, ‘A Most Unwarrantable In- trusion, Perpetrated by Mr John Brougham on Mr. Whiting,”’ then “ Po-ca-bon-tas,”’ and final- ly, “Magnificent Distances,” with Mr. Brougham as‘ Pat Rooney.’ “Columbus” will be brought ont in superb le on ‘Monday night. The “Fairy Light Guard,”’ who bave arrived from New York, will appear in full force. Their “target practice’? is something richly worth seeing. “Qvantico,”’ writing to the Alexandria Sen- tinel touching the recent great debate in the Sen- ate, on the Kansas question, says “The floor of the Senate was crowded with la- dies, members of the Ho nd veutiemen enti- tled to the floor. Many of the ladies remained tn the galleries tweive or thirteen hours witbout leaving their seats, most of the time engaged ip teading yellow covered novels. In walking throngh the galleries this morning I found long Pieces of reed, curiously shaped strips of brass and steel, egy shells, remaant of junches, aad so forth!" What does he mean, in the name of wonder, by the mystical “and xo forth ?”? Scopen Deatu —We understand that about ten o'clock last evening, Mrs. West, wife of Wim Hl. West, a clerk in the Treasury Department, died very suddenly at her residence on 10°h street. She had bot a few moments previously been en gaged in conversation with some visitors whom she was entertaining, wheu she complained of a suffocating sensation, and before medical aid could be obtained, she was a corpse. She leaves @ husband and eight children to mourn their an- expected bereavement Pient ox THE Avenug —Yesterday afternoon # fizht took place between Edward Castello and Joba Hayman, in which Hayman was struck on the face with a knife. The fight occurred about adrcnken man in the neighborhood. Castello was fined $10 and costs, and gave bail for peace Hayman was tiued £30 and costs, and zave secn- rity for peace They were arrested by Ofticer McHenry, and tried by Justice Donn. ‘Tue wor« inthe Navy Yard has become so scarce that the workmen are being discharged by dozens. Inthe machine shops, boiler, and pat- tern maker's shops, as well asthe laboring de- partment of the yard, the men are being dail turned out with the ominous information that there is nothing for them todo. and not much bope for the future. Is 1T Not aBouT Time for the city authorities to offer a reward for the detection of the incendia- tles who are operating nightly with such perfect impunity? Gangs of rival rowdies set these fires, it is wetl understo: d. to draw their oppo- nents out for a fight, and perfectly indifferent are the beartless scoundrels whether life as well as property is not destroyed for the gratification of their brutal appetites. Ax AccipENT.—Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Put- pam, the well-known porter at the Kirkwood House, while sitting on the box of one of his coaches at the National, slipped off and fell on the stone pavement, with so great violence as to render bit entirely insensible for half an bour. The injury was from the jar. Hw is, however, out and about to-day. Tuz River —This morning the seamer Gay brought up to Stone & Magruder’s wharf, on hundred and fifty tubs of shad, the product of the gillers, which were so!d tothe Baltimore hucksters at $19 per hundred. There are no ar- rivals at the coal wharves to-day. Both Lord Malmesbury and Count Walewski, it is affirmed, througbout bave shown great Judgment and discretion. in reply to Lord Malmes' Ty's request for an explanat: of the passages at which so much offense was taken in the House of Commons, Count Walew- ski frankly reminds the country of the undoubted proofs yivea by the Emperor of the value he at- taches to the alliance by the concessions to the views of England doring the Crimean war, and since the treaty He to observe that after the Emperor bad n many times exposed and escaped many attacks made by assassins who, it was proved, had concocted their plans in England, be thought it was no presumption to apprsi tothe friendly feeling and justice of Envland to prevent, if possible, a recurrence of such crimes: Count Walewski repudiates, in the Emperor's name, any idea of wishing to include English- men in the category of refagees to whom he al- luded, or a desire to change our laws, or an in- tention to condem them; but now, regretting the misconstruction placed on bis intention, be requests the correspondence to cease and the al Hane to continue.
