At Leavenworth City they toox on board Mr F.R Coundry, US Marshal for Wisconsin, with a Prisoner. He, with four others, was charged with having robbed a jewelry store in La Cross last summer. He was a Garman, and when found was living on the bottom lands opposite Leavenworth City. After arresting him, his bouse was searched, and —a— worth of the jewelry was found in a trun The pehoner was taken on the boat in irons, both bands and feet; but after being on boaid twenty-four hours, the Marsbal took his hand- eutts off, so that he might feed bimseif. All went on smoothly until the morni of the 16th, when the boat was in the bend between Miami and DeWitt. It was just about daylight, aad the prisoner asked the Marshal fora glass of brandy. The Marsha! went to the bar on this er- rand, and, returned, when, to his astonishment, he found the prisoner missing. He could not be found any where on the boat.’ His room was ex amined, and it was discovered that both the life- preservers were gone, leaving the supposition that he had jumped overboard with them, his shackles weigbing fifteen pounds, clothinz, &c.
