At Rev. Dr. J.C. Smith’s Church, 9h street, yesterday evening, a Union Piayer-meeting was held, which lasted one beur, and was attended by more people than there were seats in the house to accommodate. At the sa- cred altar were the Rev. Clergy of the city; all differences of opinion, and all petty sectional Jealouses apparently forgotten. The exercises consisted of prayer, sinving, and exhortation, interspersed with the reading of letters and ex. tracts in r to the revivals now going on at the North; and a deep interest seemed to pervade the entire congreyation in relation to ail those matters. Prominent among those at the altar were the Rev Mr. Smith, Rev. Mr. Granburi > Dr. Gurley, Rev. Mr. Sampson, Rev. Mr. Finkle and others; and seveiai Jay brethren joined inthe interesting exercises. The hour being thus con- sumed. Rev. Dr. Sinith addressed some excel- lent words of exhortation to those around bim, and then read the byuin commencing “Justas I am. without a plea, O Lamb of God, I come to Thee,” in which the whole congregation joined, and the meeting closed with the benediction. The religious feeling which has been abroad in different parts of the country for some time past, has reached our city, and.a union prayer meeting was-beld yesterday afternoon in the M. P. Church, on Congress street. There was a large congregation, composed of almost ull de- nominations in attendance, and quite a solemn feeling appeared to pervade the entire congrega- tion. These meetings will be held in the same chureh every afternoon this week, commencing a quarter before 5, and closing a quarter before 6 o'clock. We learn that Potomac (Masonic) Lodge has purchased the eligibly located property on High Street, near Bridge, now occupied by Samuel McKnight, Esq., where oat intend, at an early day, to erect a handsome bali. An individual, by the name of Archibald Brown, applied at tue watch-house last night for lodging, and was taken in and placed in one of the alte, where he was found this morning dead. Coroner Woodwa:d held an iuquest over the body, and the jury rendered the following ver- dict: “He the said Archibald Brown, came to the watch-house, in Georgetown, on the night of the 24d of March, 1858, for a ‘ing, and in the morning was found dead the cell of said watch-honse; and, from the evidence, the ju’ believe his death was caused by dissipation ai exposure, The last two years of his life, he was a vagrant, and had no visible means of support.’’ We may have something more to say about this matter aud place hereafter. s.
