Dr. Mclivaine Will lecture asain at the Smithsonian on this and Wednesday evenings on “ Ethnology and Pbil- ology.” On Friday evening bis lecture was of the most tuteresting character; but owing to the inclem- ency of the weather the attendance was not larye. Another cause of the small atiendance was, we suppose, the circulation of a report that the lec- ture would be postponed, to which the intensely cold weather gave satisfactory confirmation to very many of our lecture-going citizens ‘The subject of the lecture on that occasion was the Persian arrowhead language, of which the fecturer gave a curious description, illustrated by numerous examples. He also, toa stight ex- tent, eudeavored to explain the principle on which the habits and characteristics of a ple may be detected from the construction of their dialect To the lovers of the curious there have proba- bly beew no more entertaining lectures than these delivered this season, and we are gratified to ob- sesve thelr continuation Eastez Batts —We learn that our fellow- citizens, natives of France and of French extrac- tion, design repeating, on the night of Easter Monday, their late fancy dress bail, an ace which we gave in the Star not long since great gratification of thhousyuds of readers udvise them to restric the entertainment tot We © active participants in own circle, as before, and to dispose of as many promenade tickets as may be convenient to admit gentlemen and ladies to view the interesting aud agreeable scene At least four or five hundred such tickets can be dis- posed of, Loubtless The President’s Mounted Guard alse propose giving a grand ball on the same evening, which Will be graced by the attendance of an overtiow ef youth, beauty and gallantry, as usual with thefr efforts of the sort Tus Temperaxce Causg —The Rev. A DOWNRIGHT UNMITIGATED snow storm is this with which Washington city is visited to- day. Should the «now fall as steadily ax it now is doing through the day, we sball have sleigh- ing and something over Tue Svsvxsax Rrots.—It was rumored on Friday that a man bad been killed in a pistol fight at a well known cock pit near the boundary of the city. The rumor, which proved false, originated inthe fact that sume of the b’hoys had got into a muss out there, and expended a few Tounds of powder and ball. Saturday the fight ‘was renewed, and with more vigor than on t previous day; the parties being reinforced and Provided with better weapons and more ammnu- nition. The fight was of the Indian order, the combatants firing from behind trees, fences, or other sheiter. As they neared the Park. the city police thought they would take part in it; but as they approached the scene of action the r= ents beat a retreat, and some of them, in order to make their escape, threw down their arms, ‘The officers secured a tine rifle and some fowling Pieces, powder flask, pistol, &c. These parties did a sensible thing in going outside the city limits to fight their battles. The public would not be inconsolably ved to hear that they have annihilated each entirely. Wasnivctos Tuaatre.—Chas. Matthews, the eminent E@glish comedian appears to-night inthe comedy written by himself ‘Married for Money,’”’ in which he takes bis original character of ‘‘Mo- pus *' He »ppears again as ‘‘Motley” in the famous sketch ‘‘ He would be an Actor.” and in which he shows his astonishing versatility, assuming three characters and singing three comic songs— “The Pleasures of Acting,” the Welsh ballad of “ Jenny Jones,” and the Scotch song ala Fran- ~eais of “ Auld Lang Syne."” The pressure for box seats indicates that the Tush to see Mr. Mathews and his beautiful wife during their brief ement, will exceed any thing ever experie cd. in the theatrical history of this city. “Harry,” a poor old colored cripple, well known to the charitable of the Seventh Ward, and who has been in the habit of hobbling about upon crutches, gathering rags from the streets to eke ont a subsistence, was on Saturday morning found frozen dead in a cellar on 9th street, where he bas been accustomed to lodge! He was buried esterday by the Corporation officers. ‘The poor Fellow's destitute condition was not known in the neighborhood, else relief, ax hitherto, would have been promptly given him. Somer Rowntes, of the class called by courtesy “genteel,”’ about 12 o’clock last night attached a large basket to the street door of Dyson’s Apoth- ecary store, rang the bell violently, and then de camped. George McCoy, Laurence McDonald and Hugh Smith. indicted for riot and assault, submitted their cases by their counsel, JH Bradley, jr. The Court, after bearing the evidence ayainst them and ascertaining the time they had been in jail, fined them 1 each. Jain —Frederick Costrick and Peter Barjot were arrested last evening for an assault and bat- tery on a gentleman at Barjot’s house. ‘The scuf- fle caused the loss to the gentleman of a small amount of money, and small articles of value to tohim. These he supposes he lost in his at- tempts to escape. Justice Donn this morning committed the accused to jail for a trial at court. A Buitpine Burngv.—On Saturday afternoon last, the servants’ house on the farm of Mr. Elivs Yulee, in Alexandria county, Va, caught fire from sparks from the chimney, and was burned to the ground; involving a loss of perhaps $300 By the exertions of the family and various neigh- bors, the main house of the farm was preserved from destruction, with great diificulty, indeed. Ma. Trove’s Ogigxtat Picturrs.—We have only space to-day to call attention to the adver- tisement of these interesting pictures, and shall refer to then again, meantime advising our read- ers not to fail to see them ere they leave the city. Richards of Wash- ington, and Mr. Van Santvoord and Dr. Ironside of the Washington School Trustees, three mem- bers of the Board of Guardians, and one or two citizens. Before the distribution of the cards, Mr. Rich- ards, ay previess invitation, delivered an inter- esting address, and the cards were then distrib- uted to the four departments, respectively, by Mr. Van Santvoord and Dr. Ironside, and by Messrs. Marbury and Magee of the Guardians. This is an interesting quarterly ceremony that never fails to gratify those who witness it. Sev- eral members of the new Councils, and some cit- izens were expected on this occasion, but they were deterred, no doubt, by the severity of the weather. If there are any citizens, male or fe- male, who feel any interest in the education of the young, they would cause mutnal pleasure by attending on these occasions, if but to show that there are those who do feel such an interest; for, a pe jeter from the attention bestowed on these schools by the citizens, there would seem to be an almost utter indifference whether education or ignorance should prevail; but knowing that ix not the case, it is hoped that the number of vis- itors will increase. ‘ GEORGETOWN ADVERTISEM’TS.
