A STARTLING CONFESSION. Mordecai Paine, a saddler doing business in North Ninth street, was called home from his workshop on Saturday morning, bys messen- who brought the melancholy intelligence that his wife, Barbara, had taken arsenic for the purpose of committing suicide, and was then at the pe t of death. He hastened to her bedside, and found her more in agony of mind than body. She declared that there was some- thing on her mind which she wished to confess to him before her departure, with the hope of obtaining his forgiveness. Mr. Paine, with t emotion, desired her to goon with the isclosure, adding that she might assure berself of his forgiveness before she had made known her offence “Ab, Mordecai,’ said she, “‘you remember our large white pitcher was broken some time ago; I pretended to you that the cat broke it, but that was false. for | myself did it.”’ ‘Ob, my dear,”’ said Mr. Paine, “don’t con- cern yourself about such a trifle. I bad for- gotten the pitcher, and it matters not how it was broken.” ‘There is another matter,"’ said Mrs. P., af- ter some hesitation. “The six silver spoons which I made you believe were stolen by the Yankee clock-mender; | pawned them to raise money to pay the milliner for doing up my pink satin bonnet.” “Never mind it, my love,"’ said Mr. Paine, encouragingly. ‘I hope heaven will forgive you as freely as I do.” . After a shert pause, Mrs. P. began again : “Your best razor, which you missed last summer, and made so much to do about, I — it away to a pediar for a tortoise-shell comb * The deuce !—well, well,”’ said Mr. P., re collecting himself,t *‘ that is all done now, and can't be amended. Think no more of it.”’ “I could not leave the world with such a thing on my conscience,” replied the fair peni- tent. * Go on, goon,” cried Mr. Paine; “I told you that I could forgive everything at such a time as this."’ Mrs. P. resumed : ‘You remember our boarder, Simeon Drake, who ran up a bill for six weeks, and then went off in a hurry without payingacent. He and I had agreed to elope together; but he changed his mind at the last moment, and ran away without me.” “Fire and fury! do you dare to tell me this?"’ cried Mordecai in great excitement. “But, as you are dying, I won't reproach you. I'll leave you now tosettle the affair with your own conscience.” «Stay and hear one thing more,” cried the repentant Barbara. ‘lhe dose I took this morning was intended for you. I put it into your cup ef coffee, but, in my hurry to get the thing done, I gave you the wrong cup and took the right one myself.’’ “The devil fly away with you, you jade!” roared Mordecai, as he flung himself out of the room. in the entry he met the apothecary who had sold Mrs. P. the fatal powder. This medical man had heard of the commotion at Paine’s house, and suspecting the cause of it, he came to adininister hope and comfort to the afflicted “Don’t be alarmed, Mr. Paine,’’ said he, “the drug I sold to your wife was nothing but ia. I judged that she wished to destroy herself, and 1 tricked her in this way to save her life.”’ “You swindling rascal,’ shouted Paine, “bow dare you cheat acustomer in that shame- ful manner, and obtain her money on false pre- tences? Begone!”’ And with this exclamation he violently ejected the astonished apothecary from his front door. The man of physic, suspecting, of course, that the poor Mordecai was deranged, sent two officers we provide for his sate keeping. His relation of the preceding dialogue, how- ever. soon obtained his discharge.— Philadel- phia Press. Taz Causivac In New Onveans.—The grand Catholic fete of Mardi-gras, or the last day of the Carnival, was celebrated yesterday in ourcity with more than usual eclat. The day first appeared in the form of grotesque maskers at the street corners with pockets of flour; and innumerable negroes, laborers and boys, whose faces the maskers had besmeared with flour. ‘The boys carried sticks and wore their coats wrong side out. cud yet could not elude the li- censeof the day. At noon the masked figures, males and females, friars and nuns, Indians and negroes, riding and walking, drunk and sober, had becume more numerous. They were street characters, and their business was to amuse with tricks modest and vulgar, mental aud pbysical, the idle throngs which crowded every street. It was, in fact. a holiday to all kinds of business save that which ministered to the pleasure of the senses. At 4 o'clock, troops representing Indians and devils were every- where galloping through the public places. At © o'clock, a large party of men, and unmasked women in men's clothes, alighted at the St. Charles ani proceeded to the bar-room, where upon two men gut into a fight and battered the puis of each ther quite savagely The grand out-door fizale of the occasion was the procession of the “ Mistick Krewe of Co- mas, in which was the * Clessic Pantheon;”’ that is, a very perfect succession of masked groups representing all the gods of the heathen mythology, from Jupiter down to his farthest descendant. [t was 500 yards in length, and exeited intense interest. A vastcrowd for throe hours had been assembling in Lafayette square, and by 9 o’clock the front of the City Hall and the street in front were absolutely choked up with the multitude. The procession caused the utmost silence, and the flaming torches by which the groups were lighted rendered the spectacle decidediy magnificent. After the “ Krewe’ had been publicly re- ceived by the Mayor it proceeded in the midst of the jammed street down to the St. Charles Hotel, and then out to the Gaiete Theatre, where the ‘‘Krewe’’ and the favored enjoyed themselves in the mazy dance until morning. Such a day, must of course, be attended with many abuses of the license, otherwise allowa- ble on that day. The papers this morning. however, report only eight or ten cases of mur- der, and numerous fights and arrests. Grand balls were given at the Orleans Theatre and Odd Pyllows’ Hall, as well as in the numerous less noted places.—Correspondence of Cin- emuati Gazette —_—_— 2 —_____. Revivacs tx Baptist Cacrcnes.—The Ex- aminer of last week contains revival reports, cvllated from its own correspondence and ex- ebanges, from nearly five hundred places in all — of the Union’ This number embraces, jowever, only three weeks’ intelligence, and is confined for the greater part to the single de- nominativa, the Baptist, with which the paper is identified. The Examiner has been uecus- tomed to include in its rey reports the news of the other denominations; but this week was obliged to give out under the increas- ing bulk of this description of intelligence, and abridge its report by nearly one half. Never- theless the number of hopeful conversions speci- fied is nearly e/evan thousand, and might have been made, it is estimated, twenty thousand, from probably a thousand different places. The fottowing are the numbers da trom the several States : Maine 202, Ni tampsbire 103, Vermont 93, Rhode island 225, Massa- ebusetts 716, Connecticut 578, New York 1,691, New Jersey 347. The quarrel which has been going on for the last six months, between the conductors of the French papers, La Phare and La Spectateur, came to @ sort of crisis this morning, in the shape of a duel, fought by Mons. A. H. Rapp, and Mons. Theodore Thiele, in San Mateo county. It is well known that the most bitter hostility existed between the two journals, and that each were regularly filled with 2 use of the conductors of the other. Charges of the —— — rs were indulged in, and the abuse was most aggravating description. The whole trouble seems to have arisen out of eh grrr difficulty between Mons. Leon Che- , editor of La Phare, and Mons. Thiele, ed- itor of La Spectateur. The last issue of La Spoctateur contained re- ‘tions upon the conductors of La Phare, for which Mons. Rapp, the associate editor of La Phare, felt called upon to hold Mons. Thiele to personal account. He appears to have done this partly on his own individual account and also use he considered himself the fightin; man—Mons. Chemin having been a priest, an being opposed to dueling. carpe Mons. Rapp on Monday challenged Mons. Thiele to mortal combat, and authorized his seconds to settle the preliminaries. Mons. Thiele accepted the invitation to fight, and named several sec- onds to settle the terms of the hostile meeting on his behalf. The seconds, two on each side, met, ayd sev- eral propositions were made, one to fight with small swords; another to fight with dueling pistols, at from tea to fifteen distant; one to fight with revolvers; and so on. The seconds of Mons. Thiele were unwilling to ac- cept the offer made, on the ground that their principal had an affection of the eyes, and could not at in the ways proposed. Arrangements could not be made, therefore, at that time, and the matter dropped for the time being. Under this state of facts Mons. Rapp accused Mons. Thiele of cowardice, and this immediately brought matters to a head. Mons. Thiele at onee decided that he would fight at all hazards, and the preliminaries were settled that a fight should come off with rapiers or small swords this morning. _ Early this wen J accordingly, several car- riages, containing the priucipals, their seconds and & surgeon, proceeded towards San Mateo county, and the duel took place in that county, afew miles beyond the Mission, just at day- break. It is a little difficult to recount the ex- act particulars of the fight; but it appears that, after making several lunges at each other, the sword of Mons. Thiele struck Mons. Rapp in the mouth, the point jing out at the angle of the jaw under the left ear. The weapon was withdrawn, and the parties went at each other again, and after several more passes, the sword of Mons. Thiele struck Mons. Rapp in the lower part of the abdomen. Mons. app, with his left hand, is said to have seized the blade of the deadly instrument, and saved him- self from being run through, and at the same time thrust his sword into Mons. Thiele’s right leg. a short distance above the knee. ‘The ruddy tide was now spouting from the wounds of both parties. Honor was fully sat- isfied, and the parties considering the whole quarrel for once and all adjusted, shook hands and swore eee: They were then re- spectively borne to their carriages, brought back to theeity and put to bed, where tl ey still remain, under bandages and water grael treatment, doubtless looking back with sa faction to the sublime spectacle which the have presented to the world. Their wounds are “not so deep as a well, nor so wide asa church door, but ‘tis enough; ‘twill serve.”’"—San Francisco Bulletin, Tam Front 1x Coxorwss—Own or “ Apn’’ |. Lixcoty’s ILLustRatiox f the late great battle in Congress reached Spring- field, (says the Peoria Transcript), a coterie of congenial spirits assembled in the Governor's at the State House for the purpose of talking the matter over. After it had been pretty thoroughly canvassed, and just asa Portion of the company were about to retire, a well known ex-Congressman—the one who is to be elected to the U.S. Senate next winter as Doug!as’ Suecessor—dropped in. Of course every man in the crowd desired to know Ais opinions for he always has an original way of illustrating it. “Well,” said Gov. B., as the gentleman ad- dressed familiarly doubled himself into a va- cant chair, ‘‘ what a epinion of the knock ? We have just been talking “It reminds me,” said —, “of a case I once had up at Bloomington.”’ ‘* Let's hear it,”’ all said. “Two old farmers living in the vielnity of Bloomington had, from time immemorial, been at loggerbeads. They could never ree except to disagree; wouldn't build division fences, and, in short were everlastingly quarreling. One day one of them got over on the land of the other, the parties met, and a regular pitehed battle between them was the consequence. The one who came out second best eued the other for assault and battery, and I was sent for to come up and defend the suit. Among the witnesses for the plaintiff wasa remarkably talkative old fellow who was di posed to magnify the affair to my client's d’ advantage. 1t came my turn to question him. - Bmp said I,“ you say you saw this .?* ee Yes, stranger, I reckon I di “ Was it much of a fight?” I. “Pll be darned if it wasn’t, stranger, aright smart fight.”” < How much ground did the combatants cov- er “ About an acre, stranger ” ‘About an aere,’’ I repeated, musingly. “Well, now. just tell me, wasn’t that just about the smallest crop of a fight off aD acre a ground that you ever heard off 7” ‘That's so, stranger ; I’ll be gol darned if it wasn't. “‘ The jury,” added ——, giving his legs an additional twist. after the crowd had finished laugbmg at the application of the anecdote, “the jury fined my client just ten cents!” ee A Mitwavkie Sect.— The Milwaukie Free Democrat has the following account of a pain- ful tragedy : “Melancholy Affair —An individual named T.
