Williams then came out of the house, and calied bim. He observed that he would be back directly; bat he did nog return Williams then came oat and asked Perry Knight if he was a Democrat? He said no. Mr Kiasley then spoke up, and asked him what he ‘wan ed to know for, as it was none of his busi- ness? Williams went to Donnelly’s door and beckoned for his friend, and then walked out and struck Kinsley in the face with his fist I then struck Williams. Then the other one drew a pistol; I followed him up, and wrested the pis- tol from him; about which time J was stabbed, and went immediately to Gilman's drug store, and sent to Dr. Boyle’s Did not see the knife, as it was taken by my brother. Muap’s “Recorpinc Anort."—The early risers of Bsattleboro’, Vermont, were startled New Year's morn, 1857, by the radiant appari- tion of a crystal statue of colossal size, standing, in serene and majestic beauty, at the Meeting of two thorongbfares. They gathered in admira- tios snd astonishment about the glittering won- der, and scanned with delight its accurate and graceful proportions. The noble face wore an expression of intense and thoughtful atteaticn— an expression as if acaim and comprehensive wisdom was recalling and balancing all the ev of history. The drapery lay ineasy, well- defined folds upon its breast, and flowed down to the feet in classic simplicity. A distinguished editor, uewly returned from bis wanderings in the climes of finished art, came with the rest to admire and wonder at the ‘‘ Snow Statne,” for it was in fact moulded of snow and water, which, during the night, bad hardened into firm ice ‘The traveler could not be persuaded that the idea was conceived and wrought out in a single night by a youth of nineteen and uninstructed in the senlj *sart. He saw the scroll of record in the left band, and the style in the right, dropping at the side, not entirely at rest. bat pausing for the coming event, and be said “ It is a masterly sta- tue of History.”’ So near did the Snow Statue explain itself that he called it “ History,” and another, who was equaliy uncertain what the artist Intended to symbol, pronounced it ‘* Mem- ory’ Young Mead himself thought of the Re- cording Angel of the closing year when he moulded that mature and solemn air of undying recollection. Nicholas Longworth, of Cincinnatica name that carries with it thouzhts of patriotic utility and liberal aid to unobserved talent—wrote te Mr. Mead toexecute a smaller copy of his work in marble, and supplied the means te do so. This liberal act has endowed America with another artist; for, when the work was finished and placed at bis disposal. he directed it to be brought to Washington for sale, and the proceeds handed ever to the young sculptor to ald him in execu- ting new works. Mr. Mead’s friends recommend the sale of the statue by raffle, and it is now removed from the Rotunda of the Capitol to Taylor & Maury*s bookstore, 331 Pennsylvania avenue, where it ix on exhibition, and the books open for subscrip- tion to tickets. — Scrxeme Covat — Wedaesdey.—R. BAYLY, Stationer. jan 12-tf a O THE CITIZENS OF WASHINGTON, Worre’s Scuzipam Aromatic Scnnares, The proprietor begs leave to call the atteniion of strangers and the citizens of Washington, to avery superior article of Holland Gin, which be introduced to the American public uuder the name of Wolfe’s Scheidam Aromatic Schnapp: ‘This Gin is manufactured by the proprietor exclu- sively at his Diatillery in Schiedam, Holland. It 1s made from the best Barley that can be procured in Europe, at any cost, and flavored and medicated, not by the common harsh berry, but by the most choice botanical variety of the Aromatic [talian Ju- niper Berry, whose more various extract is distill- ed and rectified with its spirituous solvent. and thus becomes a concentrated tincture of exquisite fia- vors and aroma, altogether transcending in its Cor dial and Medicinal propertiesany alcoholic beverage heretofore known. E The proprietor has submitted it to nearly the whole Medical Faculty of the United States, and has received answers from about four thousand Physicians and Chemists, who endorse it over their signatures as a inost desirable addition to the Ma- teria Medica. Persons who purchase should be careful to get the genuine article, the whole country is flooded with counterfeits and imitations.
