The Uxcon has an article indicating the duty of the Democracy in the matter of the admission of Kansas, and which endorses emphatically, what we have all along claimed, viz: that among the people of the South there is an entire unan- imity of sentiment in favor of such admission under the Lecompton constitution, and it is equally clear that this sentiment is fully par- ticipated in by their Senators ana Representa- tives inCongress. ‘* Whatever may be the case at the North,” says the Union, “there is at the South, and among southern men, but one opinion and one party on this subject. Firm, united and determined, they will sustain the policy of the President, and demand a faithful adherence to the Nebraska act by the prompt and unconditional admission of Kansas into the Union under the Lecompton constitution.”’ The Jutellngencer undertakes to present a historical reswme of the latter stages through which the Karsas complication has passed, with the view of ascertaining the precise status in which the question now stands, but confesses toa good deal of bewilderment in its search for the truth in the labyrinthian paths and tangled by- ways of Kansas exploration. —————-2+e- i> The St. Lovis Republican of Jan. 28th, has an able letter from the Hon. There was a question as to the election of the Representative to Congress ; it being be- lieved tbat by the Tejection of some votes ille- gaily cast, that Carr, Democrat, would be de- clared elected instead of, as before reported, Far- Tot, the Free State candidate. Diarcr rrape witu Evrors —The Southern Argus announces that the mission of the Hon. ‘Wm. B. Preston, in behalf of the Virginia and Western Railroads, has been successful. Mr. Preston has succeeded in making arrange- ments with the Paris and Orleans Railroad Com- pany torun four steamers between the ports cf Orleans, France, and Norfolk, Va. ——______. I> The New York Journal of Commerce de- clares that not one cent of the $6,000 went into the pockets of the proprietor of that paper. David M. Stone, their Commercial Editor, received pap for editing and issuing several pamphlets upon the Tariff, &c., but the Journal itself had not one cent, and what was paid bim was for work done out of the Journal, not in. The Pamphlets were not printed in the Journal office, and the office - had nothing to do with them in any form, &c. Sainte sire: nntecens Say 1D™ The clipper ship Great Republic, Captain Limeburner, from the Chincha Islands, via Stan- ley, Falkland Islands, (where she put in disa- dled in October,) arrived at London on the lith inst. The Great Republic left the Chincha Islands August 16, with the largest cargo of guano ever put on shipboard, being about 4,000 tons, all of which, with the exception of a por- tion which was stored between decks, and was destroyed by the water. will be landed at Lon- don. She made the run from the latitude of Cape St. Roqne (where she was spoken Dec. 16) in 25 days. Prom Havana.—The Havana Diario says that the Spanish war vesseis recently noticed as cruis- ing about the Gulf of Mexico “eompose the first division of a x euvering squadron, which is leaving on a cruise through the waters of Cuba, to complete and demonstrate the very brilliant state of efficiency in which the war marine of Spain now is. If our information is correct, another division of no less respectable force will #00n follow the present, to be formed from the other vessels still remaining in port. And fur- ther, we hold it not impossible that at a later pe- riod the Admiralty Commandante-General may leave on board of the screw frigate Berenguela for the purpose of being present at, and directing the final evolutions of the combined force.” As to the nature or object of these final evolutions, the Diario furnishes no Satisfactory information As to Santa Anna, his name is not mentioned. Book Notices. Lire oF Aarox Burn By James Parton. New York : Mason Brothers. For sale in this ey by William Ballantyne This readable biography has, we believe, rua through some half dozen editions already, and is Perbaps the most widely-talked-of Publication of the year. Mr. Parton, we are glad to say, is not of the Griswold, cold-blooded school of bi- Ographers ; but. though he believes that Burr ‘was a better man than he Passed for, he does not conceal that he was by no means a model ebar- acter, or one to be imitated. He demonstrates, we think, that in the matter of tbe Hamilton duel Burr was quite as much sinned against as sin- ming; that asa “filibuster”? he was not more un- Scrupulous, and certainly much less sanguinary, than modern piratical adventurers whom it isthe fashion of the day to class as heroes ; that though not a “Joseph”? in respect to women, he led much too busya life, and was of tastes altogether too refined, to admit of his being guilty of the wholesale and gross libertinism of which he has ‘been accused. The bright side of Burr’s charac- ter—bis courage, cheerfulness, temperance and indomitable self-reliance—is naturally fully set forth by bis biographer. Altogether, the book is one of the most fascinating we have lately read. PERSONAL. --.. The waste of the time apparently (but by no means really) devoted to the consideration of this bill, is by no means the only drawback to the proper appreciation of the subject by Con- gress and the country. The black-mail men of the press, and the wonder-mongers of the press, both classes being numerously represented in the army of writers of Washington correspond- ence, have done as much to mystify the subject as those who use the privilege of the debate to make popularity for themselves in their respec- tive States and districts. The first mentioned ~—the plunder-mongers—who, while making indirect tenders to procure offers to buy their silence, and to silence their threatened compe- tition, have been making the welkin ring with false charges against the public printers. They have magnified the amount paid to the public printers perhaps ten-fold; while the wonder- mongers of the press have caught up their sinister stories, and repeated them in Wash- illfamson’s contluct in the premises should be Viewed as an act of hapticcs A bill to cor @ct an error in the bill making an appropriation for National Armory purposes was next taken up. it will be remembered that a statement has al- ready been made that, in the enrollment of the A my appropriation bill of last Congress an item of $360,000 for the manufacture of arms was omitted. The object of this bill is to supply that ofilission. Mr Fuulkner, of Virginia, thougnt this could not b+ a party question; and, as be viewed the matter, it is necessary that the omission shall be rectified. He therefore urged on the House the passage of the bill. Mr.S:anton,of Ohio, thouzlit that the amount of appropriation named in the bill was not re- quired. He ‘moved to = lat striking out $360,000 and inserting $19,000. Mr. Chattield, of Mass., favored the passaze of the bill. The workmen of the a-mories, he said, have t ween paid for their services, and it should baye beeathe first duty of the present Cengress to correct the omission made last year in the enrollment bill. He opposed the amend- meat. breeding, doubtiess bone’ for invitations out. But that any person permanently connected with Washington society indulges in the prac- tice is a mistake or a misrepresentation. We may add that the writer’s account of the ex- tent to which it was practiced on Lord Napier and his wife is doubtless greatly exaggerated. Deduct overdrafts. .
