LOCAL INTELLIGENCE Tue “Otp Fouxs” at Opp Frtrows Hatt — Unique and interesting was tt > Performance and appearance last night, of ‘he band of musicians who are just now concertizing under the name of the «Old Folks.’ Bat first ‘ord or two as to who these performers are. This was explained by the leader, **Father Kémp,”’ in 2 little speech delivered by him in the course of the exercises. They came, be said. from the little town of Read- ing, Mass , about twelve miles from Boston, and thelr object was to kee, ive the good old melo- dies their fathers and mothers. and grandfathers and grandmothers used to sing, and they appear- ed in ancient costume, in order to look as much like their ancestors as possible. A dress worn by one of the ladies was stated to be £04 years old. and was bronght to this country y Major Willard as a wedding dress for his iter. Three other ladies of distinction have since been married in this dress, and it was bint ed that it might ere long be used in the same capacity again. Several dresses worn by mem- bers of the class were over 175 years old A coat was exbibited which had been worn by one of the early governors of Massachusetts, and which Was over 200 years old ; also acocked hat worn at the battle of Bunker Hill. Father Kemp then anno would march in proctssion up and dewn the dif- ferent aisles of the halito give the audience an opportunity to note the old time costume. This was done, and infinite amusement was created by the display of antique articles of dress; the three-storied bonnets, short-waisted gowns, bell-crowned hats, powdered and wigged heads, immense tortoise shell combs, and other adorn- ments of the faxhionablex an hundred or more vears ago. The vraisemb! e was sustained in the orchestral instruments—the bassoon, flate, base viel, &e., &e., with the exception of the modern melodron. ‘The musie was in keeping, * Auld Lang Syne,” sung without ornamenta- tion, but with the finest massive effect; then came such grand old time tunes as Northfield, Majesty, New Jerusalem, Celestial Watering, Strike the Cymbals, Ocean, Sherburne, Corona- tion—in which the andience by request aroze and joined in singing—The Dying Christian—deliv- ered with grand eff-ct— Complaint, Montgomery, Mount Zion, The Star Spangled Banner, (by re- west.) Sherman, Bluehill, Ode on Science, Be- ore Jehovah's Awful Throne, Invitation, the Marseilles Hymn, Hail Columbia, without vari- ations, concluding with ‘+ Lord disiniss us with thy blessing.’ The interest and excitement of the audience was up to fever heat through the evening, and the concert bax bgen the topic of conversation all about town to-day The “Old Folks” giveanother concert to-night, and the lovers of ancient music, and indeed of any music, will find a rich treat in attending. We may add, that the “Old Folks’? (who, by the way, are mostly young folks.) are not con- certizing as a money making speculation, but are 1m the habit of devoting any hgh of their exhibitions, beyond their traveling expenses, to charitable purposes. Fire.—Last night about seven o'clock, the old frame building, on the northeast corner of Elev- enth and E streets, belonging to the estate of the late Wim. Huddleston Stewart, was discovered to be burning, and ina few moments the adjoining frame houses, belonging to the same estate, were also enveloped in flames. ‘The combustible ma- terial of which the houses were constructed, ren- dered it impossible to save them, and the firemen directed their tabots to save property adjacent Sy pulling down 4 smull house near the a ley on © street the flames were prevented from spread- ing to valuable property on that front of the square While pnlling down the old chimneys, a small doy. who zot in the way, was somewhat injured by the falling bricks—his head cut in two places. The firemen deserve credit for the manner iu which they conducted their work—without dis- order, cheerfully and industriously. ‘The Sun Fire Company of Alexandria came up to render assistance, and arrived before the fire was extinguished. They were taken in charge by the Franklin Fire Company until this morn- ing, when they returned to their homes. The fire is varously accounted for, but it proba- ably caught accidentatly in the building used as a cabinet shop. Besides this one and the one used as a shoe-shop the buildings were yenerally ecen as dwellings. We are unable to state the loss. Crimixat Covrt.—aAfter our report closed yesterday, the Court took up the case of the Pnited States rs. Thomas Dawson, charging the defendant with resisting Officer Benjamin D. Klopfer in the discharge of his duty. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Phe case of Jacob Keppell was then taken up, charging Keppel! with larceny of one gold watch and chain, valued at $50, from James 1. Lawn, fu this case, the evidence disclosed the fact that Lawn was sick in the defendant's house. and that while in that condition the defendant robbed him of bis watch. Lawn, who was acitizen of Balti- more, had visited this city on business, and had stopped at the defendant's hote!, at the old rail- road depot,on Pennsylvania avenue he was re- moved from thence by his friends to another house, where he sied a day or two afterwards The jary returned a verdict of guilty as indicted. Keppell, who is a man of some sixty years, was sentenced to hard labor in the District Peniten- tiary for a space of two years. To-day the case of Mary’ MeFerson, free ne- gress, was taken up for the murder df Nancy Bochanan, on the 7th day of September, 1837 Messrs. Norris Rooker appeared for the de- fence. The Sary was sworn as follows: Henry M. Hardle. Alfred Ray. Thomas Brown, David W. Oyster, Nortly Moreland, George W. rett, Paul Stevens, Jonathan Catharell, John Lawrie, dames W. Cooms, Lewis Brooks, Alexander Paul. Hacks axp Hucksters. — Yesterday was a lively day at the office of Justice Donn, it being the day for the hearing of sammons eases under the license law of the Corporation. It has been ordered by the anthorities that the law shall be strictly enforced; and the police officers, in the performance of their duty, have been obliged to kmen and hucksters complain that there are many ning with false nutabers, especially at night, and these are withont license. ‘The com plaints of overcharging are most y against these acks, and the licensed hackmen are blamed for it. F GEORGETOWN AFFAIRS. Correspondence of the Star. Guoneztown, Jan. 27, 1856 A meeting of the directors of the Georgetown Gas Company was held yesterday. The treasu- rer, D. English, Esq., made his annval report of the operations of the establishment for 1857. This exhibit shows the concern to beon a sure footing. and in as prosperous a condition as its most san- guine friends had any reason to anticipate. “A dividend of three Per cent. for the last six months waa declared, and ordered to be paid to the stock- holders. ‘This dividend, we are informed, does not cover the entire earnings for that period. ‘The company having extended their mains consider- ably during the ear, rendered it necessary to expend a portiop of the profits (some 3 per cent.) in making theée improvements. The directors also raised the salary of their president from $500 to $900 per annum. and agreed to pay their secre- tary, Mr. Henry King, who has heretofore been performing the Liber for nothing, $50 per annum. Coroner Woodward held an inquest yesterday morning over the body of Join G. Vanhorn, who was found dead in his bed. After hearing the statements of the inmates of the house, and the opinion of Dr. Lewis Maceall. jr. the jury ren- dered a verdict,“ That the death of the said Soha G. Vanhorn was the resAlt of an apoplectic fit, superinduced by the use of intoxicating drink ’’ Vanborn kept a small tavern near the Union hotel! on Bridge street We are pleased to be able to inform the public that the little Falls Bridge is nearly completed Travel over it was commenced on Friday last The structure is certainly a noble and substantial one in all its pers and reflects great credit upon all engaged in its construction, Messrs. Stone and Quigley deserves the thanks of the of the District for erecting the superstrne! so short a space of time after the completion of he masonry. We wonld advise the lovers of good eating, Xe _, to give attention to the advertisement of Mr. Rupel. Mr. R.’s restaurant always abounds with all the delicacies of the season—fresh, and of the very best qualities; and at doing up bi- valves, &c., he is not to be beat. If any one feels dis; to doubt our word, we challenge him to the proof by giving him a trial. In the way ofale, we acquired another wrinkle yesterday ; a Northern Ale-brewer purchasing a sample of Arny & Shinn’s India pale ale to take home with him for his own use. ‘The establish- ment of these gentlemen furnishes doubtless the very best articles of bottled ale and porter offered for sale any where in this region. We understand that Covenant Lodge, No. 13, 1. O. O. F., have invited a large number of their brothers of the several subordinate lodges to be Present with them this evening, to partake of a collation, &c. We expect they will have a pleas- ~ time.
