XI. AN EXTRAORDINARY IDE. [From the Lancaster Express, January Ith} An unusual excitement was caused in the cit yesterday morning, by the report that a | Herzog. merchant, who was to have been tried this week on a charge of receiving goods etoien from the cars of the Pennsylyania Railroad Company, knowing them to have been :to en, hal committed suicide by hanging himself. it appears that Mr. Herzog went to bed on Saturday night as usual, and was not missed by his wife until about 3 o'clock in the morn ing. when she found that he had left the house She at once wakened a member of the far and upon proceeding down stairs found several letters which he had written, and among them one stating his intention to commit suicide, and that they would find his body on what is known as “ the steam-mill property,’ on the railroad, of which he was the owner; there was another letter, (subsequently written) in which he stated that he had been to the steam-mill, but that he was so much disturbed by the dogs barking that he had chosen another spot, and that they would fin? body in Haldy’s mar- dle yard, in the rear of his own store. A search for the body was begun, and it was finally disgrvered hanging from the limb of the apple tree which stood in the lower part of the yard, » few feet from the door of Mr. Haldy’s workshop An examination of the body showed tot life was extinet, he having evidently been dead some time. The body was subsequently cut down and carrie Finto Reese's hotel. where Coroner Summy held an inquest, the jury re- turning a verdict in accordance with the facts. The circumstances attending this rash avt {n+ slicate that it was oue of the most vool and de- liberate suicides on record. About three months ago Mr. Herzog expressed to his counsel his intention of “taking poison;"’ but they sup- posed they had dissuaded him from the act, and quieted his mind. On Saturda » he sent for George M. Kline, Esq., one of his counsel, whom he wished to sco in relation to bitsiness suatters, and although the deceated had been unwell the night previous, end appeared some- what disturbed in mind, nething was noticed sufficiently peculiar to indicate an intention of self-destruction; but on Thursday last he had ordered his coffin ta be made by Mr. Weidler, to whem he gave minute details as to its con- ttructien. In consequence of the custom of the Jews interring their dead in an ordinary :o0igh =qur-re box. no suspicions were excited as to tl tee purpose for waich this box was intended. When found, the body was hanging in such “a porition as to indieate extraordinary deliber- ation and coolness in the act. The one foot Was but two inches from the ground, while the other was thrown up sidewise, and resting upon the tressel on which he had stood while adjust- dag the cord round his neck. A few years ago, when the workshop was built, it was found necessary to cut down one of two fruit-trees which stood in the way. Herzog remonstrated. but finally consented that one should be removed. He particularly designated the apple-tree in question as the ene which should be spared. Little did he then think that he was pleading tor the treeon which b ould die the death of the suicide. Since arrest for complicity in the robbery of the freight cars of the Pennsylvania Raii- road Company, we learn that Mr. Herzog had Paid off about $14,000, managing to meet all demands which were rushed in upon him after his troubles commenced. though in the period referred to he did not collect $500. The fune- Eben + [cottmbxicatan. Mr. Editor’ A friend of the new Code, in ® cottithhnicdtion in Saturday evening's Star, Writing over the signature of “For it,” in a classification of those whom he thinks opposes the Gode and will vote against it, says that ‘every justice of the peace’ # * * will vote against it, because all this host live retty much on the ignorance of our citizens of whet is the present law.’’ For it’ has more real than discretion. He should first inform him- self of facts if he would haye that which he utters considered as the tauth. ‘Every justico of the peace’’ will not vote against the Code j an] even if any one vf thetn should he trould be but exercising « great right and privilege— and that, too, without having his motive for doing so impugned. But it is not to tell him this that I trouble you, but to enter my protest against the disposition there seems to be of late to heap contempt and obloquy upon the justices and other officers whose duty it is to execute the laws. ‘For it” is, perhaps, a good citizen and desires to see the laws upheld, whether good or bad; and it would be far better for him to seek to inculeate respect for those whose duty it is to administer them, than to brin them into disrepute by classifying them with pettifogzing lawyers, groggery keepers, adul- terators. persons of disreputable occupations, burglars, thieves, &c. Justitta THE POLICE OF LONDON. Very much has been said in cisatlantic as well as transatlantic journals of the admirable efiicieney and general good character of the London police. and as a body we believe that organization deserves all the praise that has been bestowed uponit. It is a mistakt, how- ever, to suppose that that there are no individ- ual defaulters. no unworthy members in the London police force. We have before us two reports of cases in the Courts of the British metropolis. in each of whch a policeman ap- peared as the defendant under circumstances which have scarcely found a parallel in this city, much fault as has, too often justly, beon found with our police organization. ue one ease the defendant, named Hugh Brady, was charged with and found guilty of having gross- ly assaulted two women near the door of their own residence in a respectable part of the eity, they having been left for afew moments by the husband of one of them, who had just returned with them from some place of amusement. On the wife’s outery the husband came up, and on his remonstrating with the policeman, the latter followed him with abuse up to his own door, and when his victim proposed to take his number in order to report him, fol- lowed him into his own house, and beat him murderously with his club. He then dragged him to the police station and entered a charge against him for assault. Defore the justice on the following day he so prevarieated in his tes- timony that the Court ordered the prisoner's re- lease and the polieeman’s arrest, and the latter heing found guilty by a jury. was immediately sentenced to two years hard labor in the house correction The other case was that of a policeman pre- terring, on oath, st two untortu h was dem i In this e punished with equal prompti- strated by the e! the offender tude, thongh with less severity ChargeS of t than ¢ kind have, we helieve, more we been made inst members of the far-famed London 1 bat with no such fre- quency as to reflect upon the general c| ter «4 that fine body of men. A Pairatess Wire axp a Ruixep House- Hoty —We yesterday alluded to the base con- duct of an old and prominent citizen, towards @ young lady whom he had raised from child- hood, and whom, instead of leading and direet- ing in the path of virtue. be has utterly ruined, aod thrown upon the world a4 a miserable out- cast. To-day. we record the vile and inex- eusable treachery of a young and handsome wife, who has brought ruin upon her family and friends, and cast herself upon a sea of troubles, where che must toss incessantly, until the frail bark of life is wrecked, and sinks forever. We will give the case in as few words as pos- sible. A ng gentleman of good family and industrious habits, who vecupied a responsible and lucrative situ nin an extensive manu- facturing establishment in the upper part of the city, and who resided in a comfortable home in the same vicimty, a few evenings since surprised his wife in his own kitchen, while in eriminal conversation with a married man, and an intimate acquaintance of her husband. The guilty man fied, and the feelings of the de- graded wife may possibly be imagined. Her refidelity was wiiiten upon her very brow, and her mouth was sealed to all palliation or ex- ease. She stood dumb and deb: in the presence of her injured husband, who has since soi @ just, though severe course toward her. He bas utterly discarded her, and thus she is thrown as a wanton upon the world. The household goods were carted to auction, and the once happy home is deserted forever. The injured gentleman will no doubt apply for a divorce, and the wife of the base wretch who played the xeducer, may pos y be driven to the same extremity. [tis not saying too much —-that the peace of at least two families has been utterly destroyed by this one base~act. The woman is the mother of one or two chil- dren, and we are informed that they are thrown upon her keeping. thus intimating an unwill- ingness on his part te acknowledge them as le- gitimate. P. Chase, which were sold together fo: in these sales a sufficient sum was realized, and asmall balance was paid to Lucy. She told the Constable that “next year, and the year following, and every year, until the law was changed, the same thing would have to be done.’’ He replied that he would let somebody else have the job, as it was not a pleasant duty for him to perform. He then carried back into the house the articles of furniture which had not been sold, and seemed glad to get away, after vindicating the majesty of the law in so satisfactory a manner. The public of Orange, wa learn, will soon heac from Mrs. Lucy Stone, on this subject, at a meeting she intends to call. —V. ¥. Poss Sr Tue New Excuisn Law Reatine to Mar- kieD Wowex.—From the 3st ult., the Act passed in the Jate session of Parliament, to en- able marricd women to dispose of reversionary interests in persona! estates, took effect. The new law is not to extend to Scotland. ty The funeral of Miss Emily Gardiner, late teacher in one of the primary schools in Roxbury. Mass., who ated on Monday, took place on the I4th. The circumstances attend- ing the death of this young lady were of a pe- euliarly painful character. She came before the school committee « short time since, at the request of several members, who wished to pro- move her from the office of teacher in the pri- mary school to the grammar school. Of a ceedingly nervous organization. she was so sensibly affected by the examination as to be- eoune insane, and died from the effects of an el mentality.
