Tur Annvat Festivar or CotumBia Loven, No. 10, 1.0. O. F.—Columbia Lodge, we believe, was the first, or among the first, to establish that delightful institution, the Odd Fellows’ Levee, now every where so popular. This popularity is founded on solid grounds, and is likely toendure and increase. The annual festival brinys to- gether Odd Fellows and their families and friends in pleasant social re-union, and bas the benificent effect of axsociating the old and the young and demonstrating that they can have enjoyments in common. The old are made to feel that they are not in the way merely becanse they are old. as young America has a habit of hinting, and the young are permitted the fullest exercise of inno- cent enjoyment with the pleasure even heightened by the knowledge that loving parents and friends are made happy in seeing their happiness. The order maintained at such festivals, we need hard- ly say, is admirable, ax no rowdy ventures to show his face at a place where the members of a powerful and influential organization are on hand fndtvidually and collectively to punish the slight- est attempt to interrupt the all-pervading good feeling. The programme for the Festival of Monday night presents a variety of attractions. There are to be addresses by Hon Reuben R. Fenton and Rev J.C. Granbery; distribution of gifts to the orphans under charge of the Lodge, by the Grand Maste); singing by an amateur (Qjuartette party; and five musie (including an original mareh) by Withers’s Band. Refreshments will be served up, and upon the conclusion of the early programme, the room will be cleared for dancing purposes, for the benetit of those xo in- clined. This isa rich and Inviting programme, indeed, and will certainly fill the Hall to its ca- pacity. Tre Eicura or Jaxnvary Extertainment — The Jackson Democratic Association had their annual supper last night, at Philharmonic Hall, Star Buildings, it being the anniversary of the battle of New Orleans. Dr. Wm. Jones pre- sided, and speeches were made by Hon. Mr. Barksdale, of Mixx , Mr. Rose. of New York, Mr. Buett, of Montgomery county, Md., Gover- nor Stevens. of Washington Territory, and Jno E. Norris, Faq. A large numter were present, and much enthu siasm wasevinced. The remarks of the honorable gentleman from Mississippi were very able and eloquent indeed. He expressed himself in favor of acquiring Cuba, Nicaragua and all Central America The Hon. Mr. Stevens spoke briefly and point- edly to the memory of Andrew Jackson, and was frequently interrupted with cheers. At the close of the speaking. the company pro- ceeded to the supper tables, which were plenti- fully supplied with substantials for a hearty repast, and all fell to, and discussed the excellent fare with good appetites Fine music was contributed during the evening by Withers’ Band, which played patriotic airsin an enthusiastic manner. After the =, the company formed in pro- cession and paid President Buchana sit, and duly serenaded him; and the President made a few remarks in respouse to the con:p ment, most happy and appropriate to the occasion. In tax nURRY of making up the form yester- day a portion of the following item was trans- posed, making it rather unintelligible : “ EXNTOLRRABLE.—It is well known that nine- tenths of tue pauper population maintained by our citizens are non-residents, and that a regular system of packing such vagrants upon W: ton city ix maintained by the authorities of cities and towns elsewhere. This is bad enough, but it is certainly intolerable when our neighbors ud their destitute here infected by loathsome contagious disease. A few nights since a man who had the small pox, dragged himself on foot from Alexandria to this city, whence, he said, he had been sent by the assurance that in Washing- ton he would be properly cared for, Such a trick as this is as near first class villainy as one ean well imagine.’’ We hear that a person afflicted with small pox has been lying in a schooner, off our wharves, for some days, and who was sent here to the * Marine Hospital.” He bas finally been pro- vided for under marine hospital regulations, but is not to be taken into the city, the Commissioner of Health resisting any such course. The Government pays for the maintenance of all such eases of sickness among wariners who pey the hospital tax, and in ord y cases they are tsken to the Infirmary; but fn cases of con fagions disease other provisions are nitde tor them by the physicians of the lufirmary Serreme Covunr.—Fyiday—Ileury M. Atremrr at Mugper and Anson.—Atan early hour this morning several persons attacked the residence of Mr. John H. Wise, bailiff of the Criminal Court, on New Jersey avenue near the Capitol. A stone was thrown at the window which broke out the entire sash, smashing the glass to pieces. Mr. Wine looked out to nee what was going on, and « pistol was fired at him, the ball grazing bis hair; he fell back, and sev- eral bailx were shot into the house, some of which he picked up and found to be rifie or large pistol bails. Mr. Wise, after the parties were yone, proceeded to make an examination, and discoy- eed that an attempt bad been made to fle the house by plactny « ay of cotton satarated with combustible fluid in parts of the house where tire would be tikely to spread rapidly. Mr. hed Cea asked that the committee on poor and workhouse be dixcharged from the further consideration of certain communications from the Mayor; granted. From the concise, elaborate and able report of our Corporotion Clerk, made to the Councils last- night, we gather the following facts. We regret, however, that time and space will not permit us to give it im extenso, ax it certainly is a Corpora- tion paper of more than ordinary interest—oue that reflects great credit upon its author, and that should be spread before our citizens in @ printed form, at as early a day ax possible. Great credit is due to Mr. Laird for the manner in which he haw systematized and managed the affairs of our Corporation since his election to the office of clerk. The total receipts into the treasury for the year 1857 amounted to 256,109 36, and the total expen- ditures to $47,261 47, leaving a balance on hand of $2.817 89.
