THE TWICE HANGED. [TRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH.} I bave only to state thatat the moment when the tale I am about to tell commences, it is noon, in the French town of La Piroche, that the month is May, and the year 1418. Two men, one older than the other, one the father and the other the son, both peasants, are jogging alon the road into the town, mounted on a couple of ponies, which trot at a paco hegre ter able, considering they are only ponies bestrode by peasants. hall we get there in time?’’ asked the son. “Yes; it won't take place before two o'clock,” answered the father, “‘ and it is only a quarter past noon, by the sun.’ ~ [tis what I am very curious to see.’ ~: [ have no doubt you are. ~ And 40 he is to be hung in the armor he stole?” = Yes.” « Was the armor handsome ?”’ * Magnificent, they say, embossed all over with gol by tha he was caught as he was making away with it?" «Yes; you can comprehend that the armor wag not ‘ste carried off without making hor- rible clanking and rattling. The people in the chateau were awakened by the noise they heard."” And they arrested the fellow ?”” Not immediately; they were in a fright at first.” * Afraid of whom ?”’ “Of aghost. This wretched thief, of un- common strength, held the armor in front of him. im such a way that his head was at about the level of the waist of the said armor, so that it appeared to be of gigautie proportions in the corridor along which he passed. Add to that a harsh noise which the cunning rascal made be- hind him. and you can fancy what a terror the yalets were in. Unfortunately for him, they went and aroused the Seigneur of La Piroche, who cares a straw for no man, either livihg or dead. who simply, and without any one’s as- sistance. stopped the thief, and delivered him ip. bound hand and foot, to his own proper justice.’ ~ And his own proper justice?" Condemned him to be hanged, clad in the armer ~- Wherefore that clause in the sentence ?”” Because the Seigneur of La Piroche is not only a brave captain, but a man of sense and pirit, who wants to obtain from this just con- demnation both an example from others and a benefit for himself. Well, don’t you know that whatever has touched a hanged man becomes a talisman for its possessor’? The Seigneurof La Piroche, therefore, ordered the criminal to be clad ia his armor, that he might take it back again after he was dead, and so havea talisman in our coming wars.” : ~ That's a very clever stroke.” I -bould think so. indeed.” Let us push on; then; for I particularly want te see this poor wretch hanged.”’ The father and son continued their journey, chatting as they went. and half-an-hour after- wards they reached La Piroche. There wag an immense concourse of pple in the grand uare in front of the chateau. for there the rid was erected—a very handsome gallows, in trath, made of superb oak wood. The two companions got as near as possible to the scaf- fold, in order to lose nothing of the events that were about to take place; and like everybod else. they awaited the spectacle, with the ad- vantage of being mounted on pony-back, and of seeing better, with less fatigue. Their sus- pense was not of long duration. At a quarter to two the gate of the chateau was opened, and the condemned man appeared, preced by the guards of the Seigneur of La Pi- Toche, and followed by the executioner. The thief waa in the armor he had stolen, and was riding backwards on an ass without a saddle. His visor was down. and he hung his head. He was led elose to the scaffold. and a picture that inust have been anything but agreeable to his feelings began to be sketched in upon the azare back ground The hangman had just set his ladder leaning against the gallows, and the chaplain of Seig- neur La Pireoche, mounted on a platform pur- wsely prepared, was reading the sentence he condemned man did not stir. You would have said that he had played the spectators the searvy trick of dying before there was time to hang him hey called out to bim to get off bis ass. and give self upto the hangman. He did not budgeaninch. We can understand *hesitation. Then the hangman seized him by elbows. lifted him off the ass’s back, and set him down upright on the ground. When we say that he set him down upright, we speak the truth. But weshould tell a false- hood in saying that he remained in the same position in which he was deposited. In two minutes he ran through two-thirds of the al- phabet—that is to eay. in vulgar parlance. in- stead of remaining straight as an I, he became crooked as a Z. During the change of attitude, the chaplain had Gnisbed reading the sentence. Have you any request to make?’ he in- quired of the patient. Yes.” replied the wretehed man, in a sor- towful and searcely audible voice Whatis it?” “ Trequest my pardon !* I do not know whether the joke was invented on that occasion, but thenor never was the time to conceive and utter it. The Seigneur of La Piroche shrugged his shoulders, and ordered the hangman to do his office. Thatofficial per- Sonage prepared to mount the ladder, leaning against the gibbet, whieh, impassable. with out- stretched arm, was about to tear a soul out of a living body, and he tried to make the crimi- nal mount before him; but the thing was not easy. It is searcely credible what an amount of difficulties condemned men in general make. The executioner and his present client ap- peared to be engaged in a eontest of politeness. be point at iseue was. who should go first The hangman, to make him mount theladder, had recourse to the same means which he had employed to make him get off the ass; he took him by the waist, set him on the third stave of the ladder. and then pushed him up bebind. Bravo!’ shouted the crowd. There was no help for it, except to mount. Then the executioner adroitly slipped round the patient's neck the running noose which or: mented the end of the rope, and giving him a violent kick in the back, sent him swinging Into open epace An immense elamor followed this expected scene. and a shudder ran throughout the crowd. Of whatever crime he may be guilty, a dying man is always, for an instant. greater than fe who come to see him die. The hanged man swung twoor three minutes at the end of his rope. ax he had a right to do. kicked. writhed, and then remained motionless and stiff. They stared a few minutes longer at the euf- ferer, whose gilded armor littered in the sun- shine: the spectators gradually formed into groups. and then went their several ways home- wards, discoursing on the Inte event The next morning, at break of day, a wats of guards walked out of the chatean of La Pi- roche, to take down the boly of the criminal, and to strip itof the armor belonging to their lord; but they found what they were very far from expecting—namely, that the gallows and the rope still remained in their places, but that the hanged man was nowhere to be seen. The t+o guards rubbed their cyes. indouabt whether they were dreaming ur not; but such was thé fact. No body, and, as a natural consequence, ne armor. he most extraordinary ciroum- stance was, that the rope was neither broken nor cut, but exactly in the state in whieh it was before receiving the crimina! The guard went to announce the news to the Se gneur of La Piroche. H- would not believe them but insisted on ascertaining the truth with bit own eyes So puissant was this same Seiguuer, that be felt assured the body would be found in its place, in obedience to his wishes; bat he only saw what the others had seen What had becomeof the dead man? Had the friends or relations of the sufferer determined to give him Christian burial? The case was far from im- ible, — that the sufferer had neither riends nor relations; and people acting under religious motives would have taken the body and left the armor. That supposition, there- fore, was not to be entertained. What, then, were they to su <f The Seigneur of La Piroche was in despair’ He was mad about bis suitofarmor. He offered @ reward of ten golden crowns to whoevor would deliver up the criminal, attired as he was at the time of his death. They searched the houses; nothing was found. Nobody came to claim the reward. They sent for a learned man from the city of Bennes. and pat this question to him: ‘‘How ean a man who is hanged to death contrive to escape trom the rope which suspends him in the air by the neck ?”” The wise man demanded a week's time to think the matter over. At the end of the week, he replied, ‘‘ He cannot manage it.” Then they put a second question: “Can a thief, who did not succeed in a theft during his lifetime, and who has been condemned to death for thieving—can he thieve after death ?”’ wise man replied. “‘ Yes.’’ They asked him how that could be managed. He answered that he had not the slightest idea. He was the most loarned man of the time. They sent him home again; and were obliged to be content to believe (for those were the days of sorcery) that the thief was a sorcerer. Then masses were said to exorcise the evil spirit. who doubtless intended to avenge him- self of the Seigneur who had sentenced him to cats and of the people who came to see him le. A month was spent in fruitless search. The ‘allows still remained in its place, humiliated, Sinead! and despised. Never had a gibbet comwitted so disgraceful a breach of confidence. The Seigneur of La Piroche continued to de- mand the restitution of his armor from men, angels. or the infernal powers. Nothing came of it. At last he was doubtless on the point of making up his mind to this strange event, and the loss resulting from it, when one morning on awaking, he heard a great noise in the square where the execution had taken place. He was going to enquire what was the matter, when his chaplain entered his chamber. ** Monseigneur,”’ he said, »do you know what has happened ?”’ * No; but I will inquire directly.” Tecan tell you. 1” * What is it then?” “A miracle!” * Really?” +: The man who was hanged’’-—— ~~ Well?” ‘Is there.”* “Where ?”’ * On the gallows.”” * Hanging?" “ Yes, monseigneur.”’ ~ With his armor?” ‘With your armor.” Mo Exactly #0; because it belongs to me. And is he dead ?”* * Perfectly dead “Only what?” “Had he spurs on when he was hanged ?”” “No.” ~ Well, monseigneur, he has spurs on now; and instead of wearing the helinct on his head, he carefully laid it at the foot of the gallows, so as to be found hanging uncovered.’’ * Let us go and see, Messire Chaplain; let us go and see at ence.”’ The Seigneur of La Piroch ran into the square, which was crowded with inquisitive spectators The neck of the hanged man was seyueees in the ranning noose, the body was really at the end of the rope. and the armor was really on the body. It was prodigious. So they shout- ed, -- A wiracle !’’ ** He has repented,”’ said one, ‘‘and has come to re-hang himself.”’ *» He has been there all the time,”’ said an- other, -- only we could not see him.’’ ~ But why has he put on spurs?” inquired a third. * Doubtless because he has come from a dis- e, and was anxious to get back quick.”’ For wy part, whether far or near, I should have had no occasion whatever for spurs, be- cauze I would have taken good care to remain where I was.” And then they laughed, and then they louked at the ugly grimace on the dend man’s counten- ance As for the Seigneur of La Piroche, his only thought was to make sure that the thief was really dead, and to take possession of his sutt ofarmor. They took down the body and strip- ped it, and then, when stripped, they bung it again, and the crows set to work with sueh effect that in a couple of days it was atripped to the bone, and in a week it was like a tatter- demalion, in a fortnight it had the appearante of a nothing-at-all. Repateally the mystery was explained. It appeared that two peasants, returning home by night, and passing close to the gibbet, heard moans, gaspings, and something like a prayer; that they devoutly crossed themselves, and asked what it could be; that nobody replied, but that the moans continued, appearing to come from the body that was hanging overhead. They then took the ladder, which the hangman had left at the foot of the gibbet, set it aguinst the arm of th: gallows, and the son, mounting as far as where the criminal hung, said to him, “Is it you who are making these complaints, my poor fellow ?”’ Ibe condemned man, collecting all his atrength, answered, ‘ Yes." “ You are atill alive, then ”’ Yes.” Do you repent of your crime?” “Yes.” “ Then I will set about yntying you; and, as the (iospel commands ws to succor those who suffer, and whe even cause us to suffer, I will succor you and restore you to life, that it may lead you unto good.” The father and son then unfastened the dying man, aud comprehended how it happened that he still survived. The rope, instead ef com- pressing the neck of the thief, pressed the bot- tom of the helmet in such wise that the patient was suspended, but not strangled, and that. eatehing his head ata sort of | te or resti ace within the helmet, he hed managed to reathe and keep life existing upto the mo- ment when our two companions passed by. The latter liberated him, and transported bim to their own home, where he was handed over t» the nursing of the mother and ber maiden daughter. But he who bas stolen will steal again. In the peasaut’s house there were only two things to steal; for the money he had brought from La Poterie did not™ belong to him. These two things were bis horse and his daughter, a fair haired girl sixteen years of age. The ex-hung criminal determined to steal both; for he covet- ed the horse, and was smitten with a passion for the daughter. One night. therefore, he saddled the horse, put on spurs in order to travel more quickly, and seized the girl as che was fast asleep, to earry her off behind him. But the girl woke up and cried for help. The father and son caine to the rescue. The thief tried to escape. but it was toolate.
