[> The panic in New York hed most conclu- sively demonstrated to many the necessity for the completion of the Transatlantic telegraph, and the following well-anthenticated aptly illustrates this necessity: Ata dinner party in London, one of the oldest merchants in the city, whose busi ness connections with the United States are onan extensive seale, expressed bis conviction to one of the Directors of the Company that the Atlantic Telegraph would not be advantageous to the com- mercial community, giving utterance at the same time to sundry other ‘old fogy” sentiments in reference to the enterprise of the age. The Di- rector endeavored, but failed to convinee the merchant that he was inerror.
