VOL. X. ben ng Star. WASHINGTON, D. C., TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1857. NO. 1,471. STRUCK BY THE COMET. It is rather late in the day to express fear 03 the flaming comet that has threatened to burn up the world for so many months past, and we think that our citizens have about coneluded that the mysterious visitor was all vapor, had neither head nor tail, and was incapable of mis- ehief. Our readers will therefore feel sumewbat surprised to learn that the comet has ap im ses = his appearance, and with one wave of his extremities Tenkes Peter Flynn into a gutter, where he was picked up by a policeman, taken to a station house, and complained of for being drunk. Peter's appearance in the dock created con- siderable surprise. for his face looked like a Cin- bese map, with all the shoals and islands done in red ink, and the continent marked in mud. The latter article was also plentifu'ly plastered over the clothes of Peter. and as it had dried in eakes during the night, he seemed covered with an armor that kept hiv foes at a respectable distance, for the otlicers of the court held their fingers to their noses as they held Peter up at arm's length for the inspection of the Judge. “Do you say guilty. or not guilty. to the eharge of being drunk’’’ asked the clerk, mo- tioning the officers to remore the prisoner to a greater distance from the desk, and requesting a loafer to let down a window. ‘* Whist'™ replied Peter, holding on his head with both hands, and looking upward. “ don’t be bothering me with questions and the like, when I am waiting for tt to fall!’ ** Does this defendant at the bar plead guilty or not guilty?” asked the Judge, refreshing his olfactories with a pinch of snuff, and then gent- ly waving a sombre-colored handkerchief, as ugh he wished to keep the air of the oourt- room in motion. ~ [t's for yees lives I’m plading.”’ cried Pe- ter, keeping one eye on the ceiling and the other on the Judge, as though expecting some won- derful change to take as in a very short time, which he intended to be prepared for. «I think that the defendant is still intoxi- eated,”’ said the Judge mildly, * he had better be removed until sober.’” «I'm not drunk, yer honor, and never was,”’ replied Pe.er promptly. “Did you arrest the defendant?" inquired the — of policeman No. 499. “ Idid.”’ “ What signs of intoxication did you observe in the prisoner,”’ asked the court. “: He was lying in the gutter and erying.”’ “And who in the devil's name wouldn't ery if rapped over the head by a blackguurd of a eummit,’’ roared Peter. “If any person bas assaulted you the law will grant redress!" the court said, not exactly understanding what had rapped Peter over the head into the gutter. “It's all I want. yer honor, is jestice. Her —— a The British and American Patent Offices. The London Engineer bas the following arti- cle, comparing the English and American Pat- ent Offices : “We had no ides of the eribped, eabined. and confined nature of our own little nest, in compéerison with the vast aviary in which we bave been accustomed to be ileeced by our transatlantic friends, befure we had the plans drawn out on the sa:ne scale, or we think we we should have hesitated to make such an ¢r- pose of our deficiencies ; but the pians being — and promised to our readers, we feel ound to bring them to the light, let the conse- quences be damaging as they may. We had read of the sizes of the various rooms of the American office, had published descriptions of it and we had seen the plan; and, further, we knew well the ins and outs of our own Patent Office; but never, until the plans were placed side by side, did the comparison appear so ri- diculous. We do net say chat some of the clos- ets of the American office wre as large as our raya library, but really the space occupied y the entire building is so vastly greater than our own little jewel in Chancery lune. that we are at a loss to kuow what use can possibly be made of it. It is true that the plan of the American office, as we have given it, is not completed—one pur- tion having to be built, and other portions being —— by different departments of state; yet, for all this, the building was designed tor the Patent Office alone, and to the purposes of this office alone will it very shéttly be devoted, so that we may justly conclude, from the size of the entire building, what views the Americans entertain of the importance of the patent busi- ness of theircountry. In one of our depart- ments th is so confined that we have veatdimended the attendants to wear spring shoes, so that would, aftera little prac- tiee, be able to jump over each other’s heads, there being no room w between the shelves and the backs of the chairs of those-sitting at the eentral table With respect to the swre department. there is only sufficient room in the vorrugated iron out-house to contain a few copies of each of the printed specifications, which space will be wholly inadequate when the »: cations uf the patents granted under the old law are all printed. As W/ @ maseum ' vt models, it does not exist, except in one of the boilers at Kensington , and as recent events, to which we referred last week, give signs of un explosion iu that quarter. no safety-valve hav- ing ae yet been discovered—it is not impossible that the models may again have to be placed in their respective cases. and consigned to the cel- | tars from whieh they were taken. Now, this all wo bad, especially when we consider that the patert fund. notwithstanding the excessive fees of the law officers, has accumulated tu the extent of about £100,000. Patentees will never, us was at one time suggested, have any t» know, would it not be as well employed in building @ respectable office as in remaining in the treasury / The business done in our Pat- eat Ufice is not less important than that of the United States office: then what makes the dif- ference tes the v entertained aa to the smount of space required for the proper trans- astion of that Wesinees ? ‘4 HOW TO MAKE A FRENCH COOK.
