Scnoot Girt Vator —The following, from the Boston Post, isa fair commentary upon the fi nary omnipotence of numerous misses of the boarding school : Queealy Miss Quaint, the aim of whose life Is to die an old maid or a mimsater’s wile, Grotesquely averred, after hearing young Sproad, “I'll hear him to-day, +f J walk on my head?” “Good,” said old Hunk with a comical smie, —— if you're late, don’t come up the broad ie —2+e- InteRestixe Casz or Dovstrct Ipextity.— There is agg excitement in Canada West specting the trial of one McHenry alias William ownsend, before the Haldimand Assizes at Ca- yuga. Wim. Townsend is a notorious robber and murderer whom the Canadian police have long been secking for. The prisoner has been arrested and indicted an Wm. Townsend, but he alleges that he is not Townsend—that he is a native of ‘Scotland named McHenry. He is put on trial for the murder of John 4. Nellex, on the Isth of Oc- tober, 185i—one of the many crimes imputed to Townsend. The testimoay as to the identity of the prisoner is extraordinarily conflicting. The Hon. Judge Burns is the presiding Judge. In his charge to the grand jury, in borne 4 to the extraordinary excitement that prevailed throug li- out the county, he remarked that he understood many bets were pend on the result of the in- vestigation sed a strong hope that the entiemen of the jury were free fiom that taint reporter for one of the Toronto papers, in speak- pany Ber the second day's proceedings, savs that ‘it is known that one of the Jurors bad a large bet on the a ra The — sory op on Saturday night. The jury disagreed, but the supposed Townsend was immediately arrested for z mur~ der committed in Welland Township about the same time as the one for which he had just been tried. Asovr Kosseru axp tHe Moxey He Got — Some persons wonder, says the Richmond Dis- patch, how Kossuth supports himseif in the ex- ive capital of London. This is nobody's usiness. But it is none the less a fact, that Kos- suth arrived with very limited moans in the Uai- States, and that fits mission to this country, however barren of political fruits, was, ina mon- etary point of view, eminently successful. Nin thousand dollars was the amount of that dist guished geutieman’s levy in the American Re. public in the short space of nine months, being nearly as much as the President of the United States recetves in four years. This sum Kossuth declared should be devoted to the political re- demption of Hungary. a courageous as well as Patriotic declaration, when we consider the im- mense dispreportion of the means to the object to be accomplished. It is probable that, on a sober second thought, the Hungarian has made a more judicious investment of the ‘- material aid.”’ the interest of which, though inadequate tothe eman- eipation of Hunzary, is sufficient for the comfort- able support of a single patriot. 17~ M. Pigal, a sculptor of some merit, and one of the best known collectors of curiosities in Paris, died at the age of 67. His death was caus- ed, it is stated, by the grief he experienced on discovering that a specimen of a most valuable medal, which he had been long seeking for, and had recently purchased at a very high price, was after all only a well-executed imfiatlon of the genuine one. Pigal had reduced economy, or rather absurd self-denial, to a system, to which headbered with consistency through life. In bi« youth bis daily expenditure. apart from rent, was threepence a per diem; but in later years he gave way to luxurious ideas, and actually ex- pended sixpence daily. All bis money went in be purchase of curiosities, which in the absence of any heirs, becomes the property of the govern- ment. MURDER on Svic:pe.—We are informed an old gentleman by the name of Jaco) Howard, livin near the Gap Mills, in this county, was taaad dead in his bed, a few days since, with his throat cut almost from ear tocar. There being no one about bis house at the time of the occurrence, but his wife and the wife of his son and several chil- dren—the strange manner in which the instru- ment, sup d to have been used was concealed, invoives the matter in considerably mystery. The instrument above allnded to, was an old razor. It was found lying under the bed, bloody, and ‘wrapped up carefully in a checked apron. We are not apprized of any suspicions resting upon any of bis neighbors; nor bave we heard anything — the state of his own mind prior to his death — ‘omroe Democrat. {™ There are thirty thousand Pianofourteteach- ersin Paris.
